I got this game on the strength of having liked Creature in the Well a lot, then stuck it out through the awkward and annoying combat, the boring resource grinding and getting punished for trying to explore the levels by constantly glitching outside the map and having to return to camp, only to be eventually treated to an absolutely horrendous final mission, a pointless boss-fight and a daft conclusion to the story. All of the artwork, animation, character design are great, the music is fantastic, too, but the game part is just terrible. Anybody remember Cryo Interactive games in the 90s? It's that sort of deal. So, there's still some appeal here, but not for anybody who just wants to have a fun time with an interesting-looking game.
Yeah, this is really cool :> Stonefly is a very original and unconventional game, like Creature in the Well, it subverts your expectations with strange ideas and incredible mechanics. It starts off really slow, but once the world opens up it gets substantially more fun and engaging. Story is ok'ish, gameplay is innovative, the enemies are relentless, the artstyle is beautiful and the overall experience is a very charming and cozy game that I definitely recommend.
This game has a lot of bugs. The good bugs: - The artstyle is very cute, simple yet giving everything character - The rig handles very intuitively most of the time, both traversal and combat are fun and don't get boring over the course of the game - The plot is uncomplicated and not too long (took me about 8 hours to finish the story getting all upgrades and cosmetic parts and exploring all locations), it isn't overloading you with lore about the world, but it is engaging and it does a good job of guiding you from location to location - There's just enough resource management to motivate you to explore the maps in their entirety, but not to the point of having to grind for anything - The soundtrack is great, adds a lot to the immersion The bad bugs: - The maps have quite a lot of holes that weren't supposed to be there, especially at the edges. It a game all about exploring every corner this starts to get rather annoying, especially because sometimes the rig fails to "die" and respawn when falling into a hole, forcing you to return to camp - Sometimes the camera gets in the way of the traversal, obscuring the view with bits of scenery - Occasionally there's some jank in the movement, causing you to momentarily get stuck in terrain (it's fairly easy to get moving again, but still) - On Linux/Steam Deck video segments in upgrade descriprions do not load, and on Proton versions 6 and up hovering the cursor over an upgrade descriprion can cause the game to freeze up (fixed by switching to Proton 5.10-6) Overall it's a great concept with very decent execution, definitely worth your time.
Beetle mech action adventure with stylish art and fun movement and combat system. Little rough some times, but fun. More short reviews for hidden gems at my curator page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44819215-Lesser-Known-Hidden-Gems/
If anyone is selling the art book for this game I'm willing to give up my liver
wonderful game, almost the platonic ideal of a mecha game Art, Writing, and characters are really nice would've been better with voice acting three things I always look for in a mecha game are being able to get out of the mecha and move around as the pilot to get a sense of the actual size of things, being able to upgrade, customize, and personalize the mech, and gameplay that leans into the genre instead of just being a FPS game or something with a robot. The floaty bug wind sumo wrestling style of combat here is tricky but very enjoyable and flying around and collecting resources is fun and comfy
Vraiment un super jeu ! Go l'insta-buy !
Mech platformer-action at A Bug's Life scale. It's fun - I enjoyed upgrading my machine, and riding titanic beetles covered in resources through the forest to harvest more materials. I enjoyed the combat to, for awhile at least. Non-lethal but not quite non-violent, it's about knocking bugs the size of your microscopic mech off balance and blasting them off the sides of the arena with a burst of wind. It's at its best when it's new and fresh and towards the end when you have a whole array of abilities to manipulate positioning, but flags a little in the middle. The story is perfectly serviceable, a few weird snafus aside (contractions are good to use and it sounds weird when no one does!). It looks good, too, in gameplay and story sequences, from the minutiae of how mechs move to how characters emote (better even than some AAA games I've seen, the stylized look goes a long way even if the main character's bare feet are distractingly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enormous)
Great very original game with fun gameplay
