Great game let down by no save (EDIT since dev explained, it does save every 5 floors), i dont have time to always play to end and need to come back to a game, I CANT!
Works on linux, the price is a steal, has atmosphere. Well done so far.
I really enjoy playing this game. For such a small project its really big. The options on crafting, random loot and spells are huge! The art style is very fitting and the music combines well with the gameplay, you really get into the mood. I read others had some problems with crashes but I havent encountered any problems so far. Now I just hope i can get myself to the top!
This is mostly a critical review, however I don't think the game deserves a thumbs down. The primary issue I have with this game is the balancing, or the lack of. Want to survive? Re-roll your starting character until you get the leather gloves as a starting weapon, with +2/+3 hit. Want to die on the first few floors? Pick any other weapon. The level 1 lizard enemies on the first floors will sometimes sit there healing themselves while they plow through your HP. Why? Why are the most basic enemies in the game, in the first area of the game, able to heal themselves multiple times? Shouldn't this be reserved for more difficult enemies? Keep going, pray that you get lucky and receive a necklace/tablet item that gives your target negative status effects - hopefully it's a good one - and hope that no random OP enemies, like the Rat King, spawn on your floor and annihilate you. Make it this far, and you experience the key feature of the game, which is that every 5 floors you have to defeat a copy of another player, the "champion" of that floor, in order to proceed. You cannot run past them to the stairs, they have a key you need. It's a genuinely cool feature. However, since there are so few people playing this game, what ends up happening is you kill the champion, crowning you the new champion of that floor; you continue, die a few floors later, start a new run. Now you have to kill a copy of yourself upon reaching that floor again. So I'll just change my build, right? Well, I'd love to do that...if it was balanced and I didn't have to start with roughly the same builds every time in order to not die. Otherwise, this is not a bad game by any means. It's only $3, well worth the price, and I wish more people were playing.
fun roguelike with cute graphics and good soundtrack. The dev is very responsive on Discord. I played this back in alpha and again recently. Much improved and more updates planned. Well worth the cost for hours (days) of entertainment.
Update 2/13/2020: Have to change my review back to negative again.
Don't play this, it will crash. Don't save this, it will crash. Stay away from this, it will crash. I had changed my review to positive the other day, then had a crash after an hour or so (below). I'd already had crashes on save before that. Every time. Now tonight I had yet another random crash on floor 18 after 2+ hours of play. I've lost so many hours to this game now due to crashes that there's NO WAY I can or will recommend. There are so many free roguelikes that are better AND stable. Stay away until they patch it again... or forever. Uninstalling. 2/15/2020: This addendum is to address the updated dev response below. So here's the thing. I'll be the first to say a lot of issues have been addressed/fixed/tweaked/patched in this game since the end of last year. This was why I'd changed my review to positive. But these crashes are just too much. They've gotten worse since the end of last year. And yes, I did last update the review at 9.5 hours. And that seems like a lot of time for a $3 game (if you're one of the money/time = value people) but you've got to think about this: About an hour and a half of that time the game was on "pause." Meaning instead of saving the game and turning my computer off, I just pressed ESC and left my computer on while I cleaned, made dinner and ate. This is because I'd already lost an hours worth of time to a crash on a save. Then take out roughly another hour for wasted time from another random crash, then finally about two more from another crash. That leaves about five actual hours of actual play. And sure, even though it's designed to be a replayable roguelike, you can still make the case for five(ish) hours being worth $3. Generally I'd be inclined to agree but when roughly 50% your progress/time was wasted due to something beyond your control that argument holds a lot less weight. It'd be one thing if I'd played the game four or five hours without a crash and just didn't care for it and never played it again. That would have been worth the money. Most likely at that point my review would be similar to others I've written with a "I didn't care for it but it's worth the price" sort of review. This game isn't labelled as Early Access. That being the case you'd have every reason to expect it to be stable. In need of some tweaking maybe, but at least stable. This game is unfortunately not that. While I don't begrudge the devs at all wanting to make money from their creation, it's a hard sell to ask someone to pay for the very real opportunity of wasted time due to crashes especially when there are many free roguelikes that don't have these issues (as stated in review.). If you look at the reviews, even some of the positive ones, most all of them are/have experiences crashes severe enough to include it in their review. So this isn't a "just this reviewer" type thing. Supposedly this game pulls info such as crash reports from your computer. So they should be aware of these issues, not telling people they need to communicate every one if they are already getting logs. In the end this game in it's current (again, non EA) state kinda feels like you're paying to be a beta tester. No thanks. IF... they ever fix the rampant crashes, I'd say the game is definitely worth the money. Like I said in a previous iteration of my review as well as at the top of this comment, many of the ancillary issues with this game have been addressed. The crashing however is simply unacceptable. So while I will certainly admit I'm currently being and have occasionally been a bit curt, wasted time IS something worth getting upset about.
Stay Safe is a simpler roguelike that is fun to delve into and pick up/put down. Your first run through will probably take a couple hours and subsequent runs will generally take around an hour. Overall, it's a great, short game to play whenever you like. I've been playing it since the beta versions of the game and it's improved a lot since then. I especially love the addition of the four classes of characters. Class choice doesn't limit the skills and items you can use, but it does change your stats significantly and really changes the playstyle of each class. For me, it was definitely worth a buy! And I don't think I'll be putting this down any time soon. Note: Pretty much all the crashes that older reviews mention are all fixed now. They were frustrating before, but it's not an issue anymore.
After playing for just a short while i can tell the game has lots of options and depth. So far for me each run lasted least than 10 minutes, and i keep learning new stuff with each of them. The game is fun and the pixel art it's simple but attractive. The game works well that feeling of the unknown; should i continue exploring and risk it all for loot? or should i play it safe and advance to the next level? It's definitely worth it, even for casual rouge-like enthusiast like me.
8/10 Fun. Small, easy to navigate floors, and simple controlls. very straight foreward. Completely random though so if you dont like not ever knowing where anything is, this may not be for you.
As an unexpected roguelike game, it's worth the price for days of play, especially now that it's 90% :D. I hope the developers keep updating the game without deviating from the genre =) haven't had any crashes so far, it looks like it was fixed. I love the colorblind mode! haha Feature I like to have: - Allow to run or Autoexplore: Autoexplore not really a big deal because the levels are small, but it will help to have quick games - hide some traps (YES XD) I usually don't like 4-way movement, I prefer 8-way, but is not bad in this game.
