A nice little roguelike, however: There doesn't seem to be any way to "save and exit" and continue a run later on. I do understand that permadeath is easy to implement if there are no saves and therefore no save backups. But in 2019 you should be able to stop playing anytime you want and come back later on. Especially if you have a life.
The game is extremely fun and challenging as any rogue-like should be, however there are several cases where the game crashes and takes any save with it. (once it even crashed WHILE trying to save) Its because of these untimely ends to the run that I cannot recommend it. P.S. if you DO get this game, do not try to use 3 status effects on an enemy at one time. that is FOR SURE a crash.
One of those games that doesn't deserve a thumbs down but will if the balancing doesn't get addressed. Right now you feel like you get nowhere and see the same 5 levels over and over. I get it, 'Rogue Like' had become French for 'difficult for the sake of being difficult' ... I played Rogue way back in the day and it wasn't this hard to at least get going. And remember, that games have evolved since then and the constant start all over again doesn't have the same appeal now. Not bad for the $$$ but be wary
A great value for its price and definitely worth some of your time. For its point in the development cycle, the game is highly playable. I've only put in a few hours and have not cleared the game, but managed to get about halfway through on my second run. I've been playing rogue-likes for decades though, so getting to that point could take someone new to the genre some time. Pros (1) The game has a good atmosphere. This is hard to do with simplistic graphics, but the lighting and music will make you feel like you're in a dungeon. (2) You can use the dungeon to kill enemies. Right now there are just spike and fire traps, but using them is fun, and create an environment where even if you can't win by brute strength, you can win by trickery. Hopefully the Dev intends to expand upon these mechanics. (3) Crafting system. Its mostly nascent right now, but most items can be broken down into components and components used to make various weapons, armors, potions, etc. Recipe drops are entirely random, however, limiting their utility in any given run. Right now, I'd rather save my inventory space for food and healing items than components because of this. I think a fix would be to retain memory of recipes from run to run. Cons: (1) Balance issues. Healing is done purely by food. Food and consumables take no time to use so any time you get in trouble you can just spam items to stay alive. This might sound great at first but really just serves to obscure the fact that right now, the game has little in way of mobility and counter-mobility skills to make maneuver a part of the game. Additionally, because there is no hunger mechanic, no hp regeneration other than level-up, and food does not rot, any character that randomly generates with a heal spell is currently OP. These dynamics also make playing a melee character very difficult, in my opinion. Playing as a wizard is MUCH easier right now, especially early in the game. (2) Saving. Right now you can only save your game every 8 dungeon levels or so on sanctuary floors and only once on each of those floors. Personally I like this because is makes save scumming impossible. But most will not enjoy this. Its going to be about 45 minutes to an hour between save points. For a lot of people, they don't have time to play more than 20-30 minutes at a time. So this mechanic will prevent them from playing the game as much as they would otherwise. This game is on its way to becoming a great entry to the genre. Recommend the Dev allow characters to pick from a small suite of starting abilities rather than random generation (most will just spam), allow for the permanent retention of a single learned crafting recipe each run, add more maneuver based skills and as they are added consider reworking healing mechanics, and allow save and exit from any floor (if someone wants to go through the effort of save scumming, let them). Finally, I'm hoping for more in-dungeon objects and traps to interact with as this game grows. If you're a fan of this game, and new to the genre, try the following on steam: ADOM, Net Hack, Dungeonmans, Cave of Qud, Tales of Maj'Eyal, Rogue Fable III, and Rogue Empire. There are others, but these are the most complete, more traditional rogue-likes on steam.

Follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
On the main menu screen, you’ll find two option to play, Generate Random Dungeon and Generate Dungeon by File. Selecting to generate a random dungeon will then let you name your adventurer. After which your next choice is to choose your Occupation. There are four occupations on offer to you, Escapee, Fighter, Defender and Mage. The occupations each have their own stats, Escapees have the average stats, +0% across the board of Health, Strength, Defence, Magic, Attack, Evasion, Critical Hit and Sight. Fighters have +50% on Strength, with –25% on Defence and –50% with Magic. Defenders have +25% Health, Defence +50%, -50% Magic. Mages have +50% Magic, -50% Defence, -25% on both Health and Magic. Those are the main stats of each occupation but there are a couple other smaller percentages on the other stats. Once you have chosen your occupation there’s one thing left to choose, and that’s to choose what you’re going to take into the dungeons with you. There are three options (although you can change for a new batch until you find something you prefer), and each will have various weapons, shields, potions, meats and magic scrolls. Now you’re ready for your adventure into the dungeon to begin after a short introduction explaining your plight. You find yourself inside the dungeon where you will need to make your way through and find the stairs leading to the next dungeon level. As you step out of your prison cell you only have the rags on your back and the rusty shackles binding your hands. Luckily for you though nearby is a chest with your belongings stashed away inside, sadly there is also a guard. Dispatching of the guard will allow you to collect your stuff from the chest and proceed on your escape. Making your way through the dungeon levels you’ll come across various guards, creatures and traps all of which are to stop you from escaping. Chests and barrels may contain gear, equipment and items to help you progress, you may also find some gear, equipment and items after defeating guards and creatures. Your character can equip Head Gear, Body Armour, Boots, Trinkets, Shield and Weapons (One and Two-Handed Weapons). Some of the gear you may find can be part of a matching set, this will give your gear a bonus in its stats. As you defeat the enemies around the dungeons, you’ll gain experience points which will level up your character. Any weapons or gear you don’t require can be deconstructed into various parts. What parts you get will depend on what item, gear or equipment you deconstruct. You can use these deconstructed parts to craft new things, you can find what you can create in the Recipes tab in your inventory. Finding scrolls and learning them will allow you to create them. Your inventory can hold up to forty items. Some potions have an unknown effect, so use them at your own peril. You can, however, throwing these potions at your enemy to find out what they do. This is risky and you’ll have to decide whether the risk is worth it or not. Potions can have negative and positive effects, so throwing a potion which may have a positive effect like giving extra strength instead of a negative one. As you try and reach the final floor in the dungeon, you’ll come across Champions on some of the floors. These champions can be tougher than the normal creatures on your current floor level. These champions are characters of real players and should you defeat them then you’ll become champion of that floor level. You may also find what looks like a blood splattered door with some sort of face upon it. Entering this door will take you to a room where you can buy or sell items from a trader, visit a blacksmith to repair your equipment and gear. Also, here is a Save Point which you can use should you wish to take a break. However, should you die then your saved game won’t work any longer. Once you have been killed, you’ll be displayed your characters stats, how many monsters you’ve slain and who slain you. The number of steps you took and the floor number you reached, your characters level, strength, defence and magic stats. The number of items you were carrying and the total worth of those items and finally how long you were alive for. In the settings there’s options for Game (Interface and Gameplay), Controls (View and Rebind) Controller (Vibration). Graphics (Resolution, Full Screen, Colour Blind Mode), Audio (Music and Sounds volume sliders). I’ve enjoyed playing Stay Safe: Labyrinth of the Mad thus far but it’s had me pulling my hair out a few times. I had a bit of a problem while I was using my game pad (Xbox One) in the rebinding options and then using the game pad to enter my game name. I accidentally changed “Confirm” button, but I wasn’t sure of what I had changed it from. This isn’t normally a problem if you have a reset to default option but there’ isn’t one. In the end I decided to just use the keyboard as every time I pressed the A button to confirm a letter in my name, it would take me to the next screen. I found this annoying but on the bright side I now have less grey hair. One other thing I noticed was that some achievements haven’t unlocked like, Start 10 Dungeons. This isn’t really a problem for me, and it could be just a bug but to achievement hunters it might drive them up the wall. It’s a fun game to play, it will challenge you, some games I’ve played I’ve only lasted a few minutes others over an hour. Positives + Easy to play but challenging + Nice graphics + Multiple Occupations + Has achievements Negatives - Some achievements no working - No default reset in rebinding buttons - No cards currently How long will you survive as you climb floor by floor in search of reaching the dungeons exit? 7/10
Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! Very good, especially for the price. The crashes mentioned in the old reviews are no more!
Stay Safe, overall, has been quite the fun experience. Recent reviews have been complaining about constant crashes, but the developer recently patched the game and taken care of this issue. PROS ===== -Good value for money(lots of content) -Solid mechanics -Interesting skill interactions - Wide variety of equipment -Multiple classes keep the game fresh -Friendly and active developer on Discord -Upcoming content -Champion monsters every 5 floors are copies of other players CONS ===== -Slightly repetitive -Melee feels underpowered at times -Not all item sets have bonuses -Not much of a story to speak of Overall, would recommend and is a great beginner Traditional Roguelike.
I absolutely LOVE everything about this game except for... THE CRASHES!!! Of the seven times I played this game, I died three times and the game crashed unrecoverably four times. The last time it crashed after a three-hour session in which I got extremely far, which was very frustrating and got me to throw in the towel for this one. I remember the first two crashes showing some kind of crash report, but the last two crashes, it didn't even do that, so I don't have high hopes of a solution being found. As I said, I would love to recommend this to people for the gameplay, but I simply can't as this game is unplayable for me. Maybe in a year or so, I'll check it out again and if it's fixed I'll change my review.
Quite an unexpected gem. Was looking for a traditional roguelike with full controller support I could play on the Steam Deck, and this game fits the bill. Some 4 hours in so far and really enjoying it. Low enemy encounter density, but longer and more varied battles in which you have to carefully choose your strategies and manage your inventory. Definitely recommended.
I really enjoy playing this game. For such a small project its really big. The options on crafting, random loot and spells are huge! The art style is very fitting and the music combines well with the gameplay, you really get into the mood. I read others had some problems with crashes but I havent encountered any problems so far. Now I just hope i can get myself to the top!
