if you enjoy suffering this is it, i still recommend you grabbing it for as cheap as possible, the whole point of the game is to piss off the player and the game achieves that reliably, like fr not even thaaatt hard, just genuinely unfair

Spelunky 2 is a worthy successor to Spelunky HD. It is vibrant and inspired, being just different enough to feel fresh and but not too much as to be strange and uncanny. But as the serial complainer as I am, there's always a downside. The Dwellings, the concentration of hazards that can instantly end a run, and the variation in quality of new content simply hold this sequel from reaching the sheer high of Spelunky HD. I hate the Dwellings with a passion. No prizes for guessing two key reasons why. Beyond the obvious, I hate that it conceals the wondrous and wacky environments which lie beyond with its reddish "eugh"-iness and pure testes-in-a-garlic-crusher experience. While perhaps an intentional skill check, it always outlasts my patience for absolute gardening twaddle (in lieu of other strong words) and shamefully turns me towards the 1-4 shortcut almost without fail. And I say this as somebody who was comitted to ironman in Spelunky HD, and very rarely used shortcuts at all. Other levels also feel uninspired and aesthetically lacking, like filler content. Going from the Jungles to Tide Pool is the difference between a landlord's favourite shade of beige and a nice and tart scarlet. Levels that have brilliant art in the journal have no such detail in actuality, which is quite dismaying because they evidence no lack of ideas, they simply weren't implemented. Volcana and the Jungles could absolutely do with a glow up. I would also argue that there are far too many things which can insta-kill the player. Nobody likes their run ending suddenly to something they don't have any hope of surviving, especially when these dangers are difficult to spot or are very difficult to avoid. They're manageable with some experience and a seed that isn't comparable to excrement, but ultimately still too common, especially in levels that are tight and winding. A lesser issue but one that I lament is the soundtrack. Spelunky 2 is one of the few games I prefer to play with the music turned off or extremely low because I simply don't like it. While HD had some solid grooves and a good bit of variance, Spelunky 2 hasn't had anything that's caught my ears or which doesn't become stale after four whole levels with it. Regardless of my criticism, Spelunky 2 is a good game which should be ample enough for newcomer and veteran alike. It looks fine, it plays fine, and it has more than enough to chew on for the time being. When I have many more hours, I might revisit this review to amend or add something. Who knows.
instead of Spelunky it should've been Sprunki 2 and it would get like scary cause it's like cute cartoon characters but they're actually dark and twisted and evil and stuff and they sing and it's cool and i would like it a lot more i bought thinking it was sprunki but it not sprunki :(
Very Rage Bait :)
fun but hard
While there's far more content compared to HD, with this content all being well polished, interestingly detracts from the experience and it makes playthroughs especially entering Sunken City to be too linear. That's not to say it isn't fun - it definitely retains the fluidity and challenge of its predecessor - but it feels a bit too constrained. My other major criticism is that far too often the world generation leads to nuclear chaos that feels unfair and out of your control. I'd still recommend it though!
I LOVE THIS GAME I LOVE THIS GAME I LOVE THIS GAME ITS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO ME I WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT SPELUNKY 2 IN MY LIFE. I WILL NEVER MARRY ANYONE BECAUSE I WILL NEVER LOVE ANYONE MORE THAN I LOVE SPELUNKY 2. ITS SO DIFFICULT AND I WILL PROBABLY NEVER MAKE IT TO THE COSMIC OCEAN BUT THATS WHAT MAKES IT SO FUN!!!
