i dont think there will ever be a game i like as much as sonic frontiers. it was the first game i had followed from reveal to release and i always thought the game looked good even in the ign trailer. i could play this game constantly and not get bored. the music is also absolutely peak every song on the soundtrack is a banger. played mostly on switch where i have about 200 hours and multiple completed playthroughs. i love this game and it is definitely my absolute favorite game of all time.
My verdict: 9.4 out of 10 Pros: 1. Acceptable to be called as an open world Sonic game alongside Sonic Adventure 1 2. As usual, most Soundtracks are ABSOLUTE CINEMA (10 out of 10) 3. Sonic Forces only took me 3 hours of gameplay (from learning the basics to completing the main story), while Sonic Frontiers took me around 18 hours to complete the main story, not even 100-percenting the map (maybe I also did 3 hours of AFK in-game :v) 4. The grinding system is okay-ish, atleast I enjoyed the exploring each world and its scenery 5. Photo mode Cons: 1. The Pinball mandatory mini-game made my Cortisol go high (took me 1,5 hours just to master its mechanics and finish the puzzle) 2. The night starfall slots machine did interupt me during boss fights (had to redo the fight, but luckily their HP didn't reset to full) you can disable the slots mechanic at Settings P.S. my only regret was buying this game during Summer Sale in 2023 and until recently just decided to play and finish the game
I seriously will never get why games like these have so many positive reviews, it feels like the positivity around this piece of garbage is mainly developed from some sort of Stockholm Syndrome towards a game studio that just keeps on beating its fans up as they ask for more abuse! The dialogue of Sonic Frontiers is literally such a snoozefest. Every single interaction when the cast communicates to themselves or to each other is very awkward and doesn't translate well in a game enviroment. They will have talks that one would reasonably cut off from the script after reading them. This is because the cast will always stand still or barely move at all while saying essentially nothing to each other, as most of what they say is disconnected. They tried to make Sonic actually do more moves than just curl up in a ball and roll, it was a welcome change but ultimately the boss battles end up being a mashing the attack button fest as sometimes you need to go back to position press your attack button all over again. The skills you unlock for your battle abilities in fact feel so damn useless as most of them won't have enough importance in a boss battle or are just: "Hey this skill does more damage and has a bigger range than this one, but it's visually the same!" The puzzles of this game are very tedious and unfun as they keep going on and on with you basically doing the same stupid actions over and over again, because if you didn't notice it now, Sonic Frontiers is a repetitive "go to point A to point B over and over again while doing the same things" type of garbage with the puzzles being such a mind numbing experience as they are the easiest most braindead puzzles I have ever seen before. And what happened to the cool and radical enviroments that the likes of Sonic Adventure 2 had back in the day? Forget about them! Because in this game they completely changed the formula (yet again... how many times will Sonic Team lose its identity before they are satisfied?) to such a slopfest. The scenery of Sonic Frontiers reminds me of Elden Ring's one, both are praised and idolized as they throw you in the nature with very little game design as you will mainly be looking at a Windows XP type of landscape, but people like this kind of stuff because it offers the pretty graphics! It feels like the mass has forgotten what game design really meant, and are content when developers offer you Windows XP but as an "Open World" with a bunch of recycled looking enviroments between each level, that are just completely DEVOID of any resemblance of soul. Oh yeah! Remember about the glaring dialogue issues this game has that I just talked about a few moments ago? Sonic Frontiers does do something really well... and that is trying to pander to the nostalgia fans, as most of the cast's dialogue in this game will be: "Hey Knuckles remember the times when we fought together? Ahaha good times bro." or "Hey remember that in Sonic 1991? Good times bro.". And then as if the nostalgia pandering to the fans wasn't enough, 50% of the challenge levels will be you coursing through a variation of Greenhill Zone. Seriously I'm speaking to you nostalgic Sonic fans, don't you ever get tired of replaying the same level over and over? As far as I have played Sonic games, there is one Greenhill Zone level type of variation EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. So I ask of you guys, how do you never get tired of this nostalgia pandering? Isn't it about time for this franchise to try something new, to try to expand upon its world? And speaking of the world of Sonic, I really was entranced and amazed by it upon reading some pages of the comics and playing the actual good entries in this franchise, I'm a very new Sonic fan but even I can see the pitiful state this franchise has been in for so many years. There are so many characters that could and should be introduced and have their own story in a mainline game. Blaze, who has been sidelined to Sonic 06 and to spin off games with very sparce appearances, Sticks who has been made canon in the comics and would be a very interesting entry (in fact this very game references her), Metal Sonic who hasn't had any reason to appear in the games he's in decades, the Babylon Rogues as they are only in spin offs. I don't know, do something more with your cast! Make a variety of characters playable again in a mainline game! There is so much potential for this universe yet it is wasted as the games lose part of their identity and soul with every new release.
This is a Nintendo Switch/Playstation ported console/handheld game featuring the #2 platformer protagonist, Sonic, who was in a movie with Jim Carrey. This is a single player game that requires an always-on internet connection because of the already broken and utterly toxic Denuvo "copy protection" that doesn't work, but does completely screw with your PC and the game performance. So that's a red flag and a great reason to avoid this. It's absolutely unacceptable for any single player game to require an internet connection. There's a special place in hell for game developers who genuinely think this is okay. They know what they are doing, they know it's wrong, they do it anyway. Gameplay for this Nintendo Switch port involves a basic semi-open hybrid racing game/3D platforming with a focus on collecting rings (this never made sense even on Sega). There's some mini boss fights. Chief problems apart from this not being a PC game (which is enough to deter serious PC gamers), it's a bad port, with clunky and unpleasant KB controls (they really want to force the use of a console peasant children's toy gamepad), deficient Nintendo Switch graphics, and just, well, this isn't even remotely one of the best Sonic games. When you start the game and wrestle with the utter crap UI just to customise the settings, it's just the beginning. The gameplay handling is even worse. I know the purpose of the game is to look as close as possible to the ancient Sonic game on the Sega Megadrive, but the result of that somewhat hamfisted effort is low quality, plastic looking game assets that are a serious put-off when you take one look at any other professionally developed game in 2022. This looks pretty poor even compared to other Nintendo Switch games. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. The game features kinda low-polygon assets with cartoony, mobile app style shader effects. This is most likely just a hangover from the lowest common denominator platform (Switch) that it was designed to work on... they should know that PCs are capable of far better graphics. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It's far below the state of the art visuals PC gamers expect as a result of their decisions. PC gamers will be insulted by the demand from the developer that a console peasant children's toy controller should be used, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for, and must never, under any circumstances dictate to gamers how their games are to be experienced. In line with this, the camera controls are pure jank... if a platformer is going to succeed against all odds (because platforming is an ancient and pretty damned obsolete game format for the most part), the controls and gameplay feel need to be pure bliss. The game needs to feel great to play. This does not. Those technical flaws drag this game well below the minimum quality standards expected of a modern PC game. Let's look at the price and what kind of value this actually offers gamers. Should you buy this game? Is it one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Sonic Frontiers has the laughable AAA price of $40 USD (for a Nintendo Switch game!), for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. There's enough defects and quality problems with this game that it's really impossible to recommend to gamers. Unless you're maniacal Sonic fan with Sonic bedsheets and Sonic curtains and can't sleep without your Sonic funko pops. In which case you probably already have this on the Nintendo Switch it was designed for.
Best part of this glorified tech-demo was the mini-levels that reminded me of genuinely good sonic games.
The levels of sucking ass the DLC does cannot be comprehended by a human mind. If you had any questions to the base game, they are amplified tenfold, and much stuff you might've enjoyed becomes a huge slog for no reason whatsoever They turned a solid enjoyable title into something that is more brain obliterating to play than Shadow '05's worst levels HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE
