Coming from SMT 3, SMT 5 feels like an improvement in every aspect but story, although I've only played canon of creation - the original story. SMT 5: Vengeance adds a second one - canon of vengeance, which is said to be way better than the original but, while not necessary, better enjoyed if canon of creation is played first. Once again, the combat is nothing short of addictive. I've had a blast setting up sick party compositions and skillsets even when it wasn't required. Demon fusion is much more fluid than in previous titles thanks to QoL improvements, which translates into hours and hours of fun experimenting without it becoming tedious. Your party members' level is fundamental to keep progressing, but exploiting enemies' weaknesses and gaining extra turns in return while depriving the enemy of theirs by blocking their attacks allows to strategize more and grind way less. Not that I found the game grindy at all anyway. Also, there are no random encounters: enemies are visible and easily avoidable most of the time. The map feels huge and kind of open, filled with side quests. I've played on normal difficulty and the challenge didn't get out of hand at any moment. SMT is known for its high difficulty but in this case, I found that just being engaged enough and committing to keep improving your party is enough to overcome the toughest battles in just a few tries. I won't say much about the story since I'm missing part of it. But I will say that the main cast fell flat for me. The dense atmosphere and post-apocalyptic setting are there. The OST is incredible. The graphics and animations are gorgeous. There are a lot of hidden interactions between demons and some even open their own quests. You can talk and give gifts to your demons at save points, and doing so not only is entertaining, but encourages them to increase their stats and learn random skills. I do have one slight criticism about how they handled the addition of a new story: once you complete one playthrough, if you want to play the other story, you have two options: 1) start from scratch 2) carry over your level, party, money, items... aka be overpowered and kill important new scary enemies in a single turn... aka kill the fun. This makes starting your second playthrough quite unappealing. I would've appreciated an option for players who want to experience both stories that fixed the balancing according to your current level or something like that. Given that that's not the case and the large time investment, I recommend just playing canon of vengeance. I'll make sure to revisit someday, though.
After a long break from the Megami Tensei franchise, returning to it with this game has been incredibly cathartic after seeing how the series has evolved from the old-style gameplay to the latest release; better yet, the QOL upgrades, gameplay, and story aren't merely serviceable but great. Beginning with gameplay, as someone who didn't play vanilla V when it released, I cannot speak on the QOL of both versions, but to me the QOL present in this product compared to the older games completely blows them out of the water. The Magatsuhi and free-form Essence system has removed a tediously complicated fusion recipe system to get specific demons with specific skills for a certain build you're going for. Better yet, the Nahobino himself, as an SMT protagonist, has been as flexible as ever (more so than Flynn even), with the uniquely beautiful animations and 3D designs complementing the game's diverse roster of demons and skills. The bosses and Superbosses have also been the major highlights of the Canon of Vengeance campaign, which to me is an almost-perfectly balanced difficulty dynamic between the game and player where I wasn't tearing my hair out for some bosses like previous SMT games, and the ability to save anywhere as an anxious gamer is often overlooked, but to me, it is one of the more important features of an SMT game to mitigate losing your progress. Now the story, from what I can tell, is a massive improvement over the Canon of Creation's story, and both new endings are interesting (I myself got Tao's Law Ending), which the cast has been characterized better while engaging the player more intimately into the endings system, highlighting the importance of the dynamics. The new Nahobino form too is beautiful, although I do prefer the original blue's luxuriously long hair the Qadistu new antagonists were one of the highlights of the game (Agrat my beloved Nuclear witch). Overall it's not only a great game but might be my new Favorite mainline SMT game by virtue of the Gameplay and Improved story alone, although not as narratively ambitious as some of the previous entries, I can confidentally say that Shin Megami Tensei V is back with a Vengeance and is a must-play to both returning players and of new.
If you like turn based combat, then this game is a must play. If u are new then this game is a must try. Gameplay is fun, ofc the music is hard as shi too and its pretty difficult only extremely later in the game tho. This game is fun and I only played this to listen to the soundtracks.
The amount of customization and innate for each demon really helps the game to stand out compared to previous entry. Much more forgiving and yet hard compared to vanilla SMT5.
