Fun, interesting story, good puzzles, variety of things to do and places to go. Just note: Two crucial videos would not show the video portion, but sound played--a few minutes in, when the main character meets up with her friends in the yard and at the very end, when presumably they return now that the problem is solved. Annoying, but not a killer issue.
Starts out better than most HOGs but downgrades itself back to normalcy later on through bugs, bad puzzle design, and a generally stupid story. The story could've been much better if it had actually focused on saving Dylan's friends, but it just turns into some weird quest to help a bunch of ghosts toward whom Dylan always forms a haughty, black-or-white knee-jerk opinion while seemingly forgetting about the friends she's supposed to be saving. But bad stories are kind of par for the course for HOGs, so fair enough. The game is buggy in parts... some puzzles seem unsolvable. Maybe I'm just too stupid, but for some, following the hints exactly still didn't work, and I ended up having to skip them. The journal definitely bugs out as well, with entries appearing randomly, sometimes long after the associated event or, in the worst cases, before. But otherwise, I'd say it's pretty normal for a HOG. Totally fine if you just want something very casual.
Game has some bugs with not playing the movies after major story beats. Occasionally the widescreen button will cause the mouse to be locked into a much smaller area of the screen. Some puzzle instructions are unclear or plain wrong.
Obviously this title is getting a bit old at this point. But there are better ones from the same publisher/developer. While the story here is applicable for the season and entertaining enough, this one falls to weird idiosyncrasies with puzzle descriptions and other technical difficulties. Some puzzle descriptions are outright wrong along the lines of: "Find matching images. They need to match in size, shape and color". And then I spend ten minutes trying to find pairs until it turns out the color doesn't have any significance and you can just match a red skull with a green one perfectly fine. I'm not sure how the heck they could get this wrong or if its supposed to be a fun an quirky Halloween trick, but it turned my aggravation meter to the max. There was another one where the instruction completely contradicted the solution. There are some issues with tool tips in hog scenes which make it impossible to complete without unnecessary clicking and or using hints. Frustrating to someone accustomed to achievements from both not using any and not miss-clicking. If you can get past these issues, it's still fairly enjoyable and worth plowing through. Check out Portal of Evil - Stolen Runes from the same developer, that one was great !
I love horror in all forms and have played a few horror hidden object games. This is probably my favorite one. It has a good number of characters, a story from the past that gets told gradually, a clear goal in the present, and a premise that's pretty out there (in a good way). You have to do a little work to get all the cutscenes to display, some of the puzzle instructions are wrong, and the ending sequence is a letdown that doesn't even acknowledge the villain in the present day. There's a gooda mount of variation in the puzzles, and some of them are reasonably challenging. (I only see in black and white, so I had to have help on some that involved color. That dessert sudoku puzzle near the end took me a good couple of hours! I found it to be an engaging game, specifically as someone who likes horror, and would recommend getting it when it's on sale for less than a dollar, as seams to happen rather frequently. By the way, I had previously received the downloadable version of the game from a giveaway and could never get it to work right on Windows 10 or 11. The Steam version works just fine, other than having to make adjustments so later cutscenes display.
The listed release date is 2021, but this came out in 2013 and was "repackaged". This is another example of the despicable cash-grab game of bait and switch on the part of developers. Arrrgh and shame on Steam for letting these guys get away with the practice. Over, and over, and over again. I agree with the other reviewer that puzzle instructions are wrong or just flat-out broken. Also note that the translations, if they weren't so frustrating would be laughable. "Check" for "chalk"...really? The font is also hard to read and so small even the mice are hunchback. Add to this that the progression depends on the most obscure and irrational finds - there are no rational correlations. Oh, and the cut scenes resolve to black screen half the time - even the last one which then moved to the end credits. The story started out with potential, but with the sudden ending, there was no resolution. Did Dylan and Parker finally get back together? WTF? Who knows and who cares. Ugh, ugh, double ugh. And once again, Arrrgh. No more business for you Creobit and 8Floor. Cut to the Chase: Save your money - these folks had a so-so game back in the day, but today - this one, THE SAME ONE, is not worth 99 cents let alone the few bucks I paid.
