Classic windows 3.1 game. So fun!
Very nostalgic game when I was a kid. Typical platformer game.
Awesome DOS game. I used to play all 3 of them back in the early 90's. 91 and 92 I think. its been a blast going back and playing them again. Commander Keen will be next! Thanks early Bethesda(before you were actually Bethesda)!
Secret Agent, developed and published by Apogee Entertainment, is a revival of a classic PC platformer that embraces its retro heritage while introducing enough enhancements to make it appealing on modern systems. Built around the adventures of Agent 006½, the game delivers a lighthearted spy tale in which players are tasked with stopping a dangerous organization from unleashing the destructive Red Rock Rover. The premise is intentionally simple, evoking the spirit of old-school action serials and classic espionage stories rather than striving for cinematic storytelling. That simplicity becomes one of the game's defining strengths, allowing players to jump directly into the action without unnecessary distractions. The gameplay remains faithful to its origins, offering side-scrolling levels packed with enemies, hidden items, and objectives that reward thorough exploration. Every stage encourages players to seek out treasures, uncover secrets, and disable key targets before reaching the exit. Its straightforward design reflects an era when games relied on precision and repetition to create challenge. Although veteran platforming fans will likely appreciate this approach, newer players may need some time to adjust to mechanics that lack many of the conveniences found in contemporary titles. Nevertheless, there is an undeniable charm in mastering a level through observation and persistence. One of the highlights of the Steam release is the effort made to preserve and expand the original experience. Updated visuals give the environments a cleaner appearance while retaining the colorful personality of the DOS-era release. The remastered soundtrack complements the game's energetic pace, adding a fresh layer to familiar stages. Beyond audiovisual improvements, the inclusion of online leaderboards introduces a competitive element for players who enjoy chasing high scores, while Steam Workshop support significantly increases replay value through community-created content. The addition of a completely new mission also demonstrates a commitment to offering more than a simple re-release, giving longtime fans an incentive to revisit Agent 006½'s adventures. Secret Agent's greatest asset is its authenticity. It does not attempt to modernize every aspect of its design or reshape itself into something unrecognizable. Instead, it serves as a preservation piece that captures a specific moment in gaming history. That authenticity comes with compromises, however. Enemy encounters can become repetitive, movement occasionally feels rigid, and the overall experience is relatively short by today's standards. Players expecting deep progression systems or elaborate mechanics may find the gameplay limited, but those limitations are consistent with the title's original vision. Despite these shortcomings, Secret Agent succeeds in delivering an entertaining and nostalgic platforming experience. It balances reverence for the past with thoughtful improvements that make it more accessible to contemporary audiences. Whether approached as a history lesson in classic PC gaming or simply as a fun and compact platformer, it remains an enjoyable reminder of Apogee's influence during the formative years of the genre. Its combination of retro charm, additional content, and community features ensures that this classic remains relevant decades after its original debut. Rating: 7/10
Such a punch in the nostalgia! Good ol' platform fun
Note: To fix the aspect ratio, enable Steam Overlay, and take screenshots, check out this guide. Secret Agent is a simple, clean, polished, EGA action platformer. It can be enjoyed casually or with a more completionist/hardcore mindset if going for highscore. The overall flow is solid and it gives this DOS classic a pleasant, unique aesthetic & feel. With 48 levels, there's a good amount of gameplay to be had here as well. Only a few of the levels have annoying gotcha mechanics in a way that will impede level completion on the first playthrough but a moderate number have tricky enemy placement that will cheese you out of a perfect run, denying the no-damage bonus on such levels until placement is memorized. Also, the game doesn't do downward verticality well due to there being no option to look up or down, so falling into the unknown can be a bit annoying at times. Thankfully, only a few levels do anything cheesy with that. Overall, this is a solid game with good design and conveyance but only worth it if it's on sale. Also, the first 16 levels are legitimate shareware and can be freely downloaded from a variety of sites. That said, this is a DOS gem and an enjoyable classic so the full game is still a nice addition to one's library, nostalgia or not.
