This VN feels like someone copied Yuzosoft's homework and formula and made the things that are disliked about them worse while somehow taking out the good parts that people enjoyed. Short common route that barely introduces you to the cast before you are forced to choose a route for a character. The chatacter routes aren't much better as they all feel rushed and without much substance with the way they are set up ultimately coming down to the text box saying 'this happened' and then a time skip. At least the art and music are pretty good. 5/10
The art is top notch The music is amazing The story definitely catches your attention! There are a lot of BIG “plots” in this game, but the story plot is equally as big! There is also a free 18+ uncensored patch available on NekoNyan’s website for those who want to indulge on the “big plot” ( ͡ ° ͜ʖ ͡ °) Note: You will know that the patch has been applied to the game when you check on the gallery; the number of pages will increase from 3 pages (no patch applied) to 7 pages (18+ patch applied) You guys should give this visual novel a try!
Secret Agent - An Intriguing Yet Flawed Visual Novel! (ฅ'ω'ฅ)
[1] Intro :
In the realm of Japanese-style visual novels, Secret Agent emerges as an intriguing addition, but one that doesn't quite reach the pinnacle of the genre. Developed by ensemble, a well-known producer of romance visual novels, Secret Agent offers a mix of espionage, romance, and intrigue that promises much but falls short in execution.
[2] Game Experience :
The game's premise revolves around Mikage Jin, a descendant of a long line of ninjas responsible for national security. Jin's mission is to infiltrate Touka Academy undercover to solve a series of incidents orchestrated by a mysterious vigilante known as The Bat. As a player, you step into Jin's shoes and embark on this thrilling journey filled with espionage, friendship, and the potential for romance. One aspect that deserves praise in Secret Agent is its visual and auditory elements. The art and music are undeniably top-notch, immersing players in the game's world and creating a captivating atmosphere. However, this is where the positive aspects largely end. One prominent issue is the game's pacing and route structure, which leaves much to be desired. The common route feels rushed, barely allowing players to get acquainted with the cast before they are thrust into character-specific routes. These routes, unfortunately, suffer from a lack of depth and substance, often resorting to a formulaic this happened, then a time skip approach. This shortcoming detracts from the potential depth of character development and emotional engagement. On a more positive note, the setting of Secret Agent is a notable and unique aspect. It blends modern-day espionage with a high-tech city and augmented reality, creating an intriguing backdrop for the story. The ambiguity surrounding The Bat's actions adds complexity to the narrative, as players grapple with questions of morality and justice. The strongest point of the game lies in its interactions with the heroines, which provide moments of charm and connection. However, even in these interactions, the romance and character relationships often feel underdeveloped, leaving players wondering about the depth of connection between the characters. Despite these shortcomings, Secret Agent does offer moments of action and intrigue, particularly in the conflict between regular students and the order of knights. However, the secret agent aspects of the story occasionally break immersion due to inconsistent logic and questionable decision-making by the protagonist. Furthermore, the variation in quality among the heroine routes is glaring. While some routes manage to capture player interest and engagement, others feel forgettable and lackluster. This inconsistency in storytelling quality is a notable drawback. Regarding the localization and writing, Secret Agent fares relatively well in terms of pacing and readability. Typos are rare, and the inclusion of honorifics may please some fans. However, the story and romance writing could benefit from more consistency and depth. In terms of adult content, the game offers an 18+ uncensored patch, but the scenes themselves are relatively short and may feel rushed in their execution. The lack of variation in body types among the heroines may also disappoint some players. Production values, while generally good, show signs of a constrained budget, with a limited number of CGs and occasional graphical issues. Despite these limitations, the action scenes are well-executed and convey a sense of energy.
[3] Verdict :
In conclusion, Secret Agent is a visual novel with an intriguing premise and some commendable elements, such as its art and music. However, it falls short in areas such as character development, route quality, and romance, making it difficult to place among the top recommendations in the genre. While it offers a unique setting and moments of engagement, it ultimately leaves players wanting more depth and consistency in its storytelling. The story seemed interesting in the beginning, however it turned out to be quite boring. I wasn't able to finish te game so take my opinion with what you will. Visual Novels are hard to recommend since they rely quite heavily on you liking the story or not. So this one in particular is a hard no for me. I would rather recommend some others visual novels which I believe have a more interesting story or interesting characters you can enjoy yourself with.
Personal opinion on why it's bad (at least for me). Spoiler warning!:
-every time you reached a certain length, you're presented with the "chibi corner" mostly explaining what happened. Sorry, but why is this even here? i just read the whole section & now you're giving me a tldr? for what? I! JUST! FINISHED! READING! IT! -2 problems with this: "However due to an unfortunate accident, Jin's identity is exposed, and with his true identity revealed, it would mean failure for his mission, however..." 1. Unless you're going to her route, this is mostly irrelevant. So, why is this in the common route ??? 2. He's supposed to be a pro. But he infiltrated a facility once & just randomly got caught by his classmate after going out from there? bruh. -Route ending? 1 sentence summary: "Bat search to be continued..."
Hmmm my first ensemble VN that i read, i can say its short to medium (+- 15 hours) It has a good premise though. I cant understand by the level of problems before talking about consistency from common to heroine route There is short section which is annoying
yes ask AI section
I hope nekonyan will pick the fandisc(?) of this title so i can know if it can fix poor
true route
4/10, for now not worth by the price
Another review from your truly, meee~
Not that I'm well-known lol But, I played and wrote a review in 2023, why giving this a full review now? Because I've never finished this game. Therefore, I was reluctant to write one and wrote the previous half-jokingly. Tl;dr: The game isn't bad, but if this game is on sales, about 30% or more then probably it's worth. Otherwise, not really? I'd choose Kin'iro Loveriche if I have to buy either of the two on the same price. Now, let's get something out of our way first. This VN isn't bad, for real though, it's not bad at all. The art style is great, the atmosphere is great, the music itself is also okay to say the least. Then, what's the problem? Unfortunately there are many. First of all, the lead up to the romance in this game is... "weird"? I can't describe it, it just doesn't click imo. It's just like, be with the heroines enough and eventually they'll fall for you when you help them with their little insecurities/problems. It's a common trope for almost every VN, but somehow it just feels... not executed all the way, it's lacking somehow. Secondly, the protag is built with being "a good man in his work, but bad around girls". Yes, it's another common thing in VNs. But, the author heavily emphasized on him being "bad with girls", to the point it gets a little bit annoying. Last but not least, the heroines. Again, they aren't bad, really. But! Normally when you read a VN with routes, you'll expect to have an attachment to them, or at least an impression. Yet, I didn't feel anything of sort. Again, they aren't bad, but too shallow imho. Maybe because of the first reason, the lead up being weird or too easy almost, or maybe the route's main drop point isn't really impactful, or even both. Nonetheless, to me, feeling nothing at all after a route isn't a pleasant thing. In short, not a bad game, but paying ~20-30$ full price for this is... not really a wise choice tbh. If you want something "medieval" in present/future world then Kin'iro Loveriche is way better ngl.
