I bought Sonic Origins Plus to pause and play on my second screen while waiting for calls, but the performance is unacceptable. The game runs below 30 FPS, which is baffling when I can get smoother frame rates running the emulator version on a calculator. It is deeply perplexing that a 35-year-old 2D game performs so poorly on a modern PC, proving that emulation remains essential for playable performance. This lazy, unoptimized port cannot even run on hardware exponentially more powerful than the original console, serving as a stark reminder of why bad PC ports are still a major issue.
While it is a cute collection with animations, missions, and a coin/token system allows you to retry special stages which can be convenient... it still has a very frequent bug which kills your entire save file. Even if you take care to close the game properly, you will find just booting into the game it will not let you play until you delete the save and lose all progress. This means all of your in-game progress, missions, achievements, unlocks etc. In the process of just playing through Sonic 1, CD and 2 I lost my progress several times and the unlocks became meaningless. Which begs the question: if they refuse to fix this issue, what's the point in this port? I cannot recommend playing the games through this collection for as long as the save system is so utterly broken. You may be better off getting an external list of retro achievements, watching the animations elsewhere, and playing the original games.
I GREW UP WITH THESE GAMES!! They are so much fun as side scrollers that I just got done passing 1, 2 and working on 3. SONIC 1 Level Select: During the games main screen as sonic pops up out of his logo, ( the old game screen for Sonic 1, NOT the emulator or ORIGINS main menu screen ) As the music is playing, press UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT. You will then hear a ring, Immediately press and hold A, and then as you hold it, quickly press Start. You'll be sent to the level select screen. -SONIC 2 Codes: (Cartridge codes)- on the start up screen as the game ( the old game screen for Sonic 2, NOT the emulator or ORIGINS main menu screen ) go to options and go to sound test. Play the following tracks in this order. 19, 65, 09, 17. You will hear a ring, after that just press start. You will be taken to the main screen for S2, press and hold A and then press Start rather quickly. ---KEEP READING!--- - SONIC 2 ALL EMERALDS: LEVEL SELECT MENU - Once you are in the level select menu, again go to THAT sound test and play these tracks in order 04, 01, 02, 06. NOW any level you start, if you pick up 50 rings and jump, you will turn to Super Sonic. Your rings will become a timer until you come back to normal at 0 rings. Have fun and be careful, Sonic gets faster. -DEBUG MODE- Debug Mode allows you to place objects, enemies, and rings anywhere: First, enable Level Select. In Sound Test, play 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04. Start a level while holding A and pressing Start. Controls in Debug Mode: B: Turn Debug on/off A: Cycle through objects C: Place selected object Pressing A while paused resets the game If you are going to use these i recommend you use proper gaming etiquette. Pass the game first, THEN try this out. BUTE YEAH, awesome sidescroller game. Recomend
This is a collection that brings some of the most important classic platforming adventures to modern audiences with updated features and a cleaner presentation. It preserves the original charm while adding quality-of-life improvements that make the experience more accessible for new players. The biggest strength is the foundation it is built on. The classic games still hold up because of their tight controls, creative level design, memorable music, and strong sense of momentum. Each title offers a different style of gameplay, from exploration-focused stages to faster, more action-driven levels, making the collection feel varied despite its retro roots. The added features help modernize the experience. Updated modes, improved presentation, additional challenges, and the ability to play with different characters give players more reasons to revisit familiar stages. The widescreen support and smoother presentation also make the games feel more comfortable on modern displays. However, the collection has some shortcomings. The additional content is limited compared to what fans may expect from a modern compilation, and some design choices feel inconsistent. Longtime players may also feel that the package does not go far enough in preserving the full history or adding meaningful extras beyond the original games. Overall, this is a solid way to experience some classic platformers with modern conveniences. It does not completely redefine these games or offer the most complete celebration possible, but the quality of the original adventures remains strong. For newcomers, it is an excellent introduction to the series, while longtime fans will appreciate having these classics in a more accessible format.
If you buy this game (which you should really wait for a sale if you plan to), download the Ultrafix mod. Fixes a lot of the problems I would've ranted about had I not installed Ultrafix mod. It's not even that bad either, the animations are cute and it's a really smooth way to play the classic Sonic games (.. if you download Ultrafix.) ... Go download Ultrafix.
if you want to get this wait till its on sale, it's an okay collection but there are issues. like how lives were replaced with coins, sonics voicelines in sonic CD were removed, and i personally DONT like these sonic forces-looking ass island menus. like its a collection of the OLDEST sonic games, the islands should've had a lowpoly/sega saturn style to them. not ONLY for aesthetic reasons, but also for it to run better on more mid-end PCs without having to lower the resolution. WHICH BY THE WAY, DOESN'T LOWER JUST THE ISLANDS AND MENUS. IT LOWERS THE RESOLUTION OF THE GAMES THEMSELVES SO YOU CAN'T EVEN ENJOY THESE 30 SOMETHING YEAR OLD GAMES ON LOWER QUALITY MODE LIKE YOU CAN FOR FREE ON RETROARCH. overall 4/10, just emulate the games on retroarch or play the rsdk5 pc versions.
Download the Sonic Origins Ultrafix mod if you buy this game, it improves the whole experience by leaps and bounds
it's just the original Sonic trilogy plus Sonic CD in a compilation with some upgrades doesn't mean it's bad tho could get some fun out of this
