Sea Legends: Phantasmal Light Collector's Edition

Adding my voice to and old steam choir : " Wish there was a neutral avaliation option here" Making it simple and short: Pros: The game is very beautiful and has a great cosmic horror vibe. Wise decision to make 2d animated cutscenes instead of the usual weird CGI HOGs tend to have Cons: The gameplay itself is not all that good. Your inventory will always be cluttered cause the game gives too many itens right at the beginning, some you wont be using until much latter, and there's a LOT of backtracking wich is made worse by the lack of a map and fast travel. The pacing feels constrained. HOG scene spots will be reused, what is very common in the genere, but this game doesn't lead the player back to them on a natural manner like better HOGs does I recommend the game only at 70%+ off

NOT WORTH BUYING! Well game seams to be nice, but the lack of gameplay ruins it completly... You have to visit location multiple but the hint system is worst. To get to play this game the devs put the complete solution with the game instead of making the hint system right... realy bad

A relic from my childhood, I remember borrowing a disk copy of this from the library years ago. Anyway, it's your basic point and click search game, but has particularly exciting music, some decent puzzles and minigames, and a surprisingly good plot. I actually recommend buying this. It's a joy to play, even after all these years.

Probably what you would call an average run of the mill hidden object game. The artwork and premise seemed decent, but the gameplay felt stale, not going above average. In my short time I already noticed it wanted me to backtrack. Lack of a map, fast travel and proper hints whats next made me understand this experience isnt going to be that great. Plus I took a long break from playing it and when I came back my save was gone. I wasnt impressed enough to start again. I got this from a bundle and I already know what to expect from these types of games. It doesnt have to be much, but if its already trying to artificially drag out the experience, then it isnt worth it. I you have a particular fondness for them, then it will be alright. For the average person I think it will be a mediocre experience. 4/10

If it's on sale then it is worth getting.

I enjoyed it, but felt it was a bit dated to other HOG games I've played recently. The good thing about that is that the puzzles are not too easy, and will actually have to remember some clues and use some brain to figure some of them out. There are no achievements, so you can use the hint button as much as you'd like, even in HOG scenes. Story was good for most of it, goes off the deep end near the ending for my taste, but that's probably a personal taste thing. Setting, art, voice acting, music were all good. One of the ones I might replay again in the future.

Complicated, Tiring... The hints only work on the screen you are on. No map, no fast travel. Waste a lot of time looking for what to do...

Sea Legends: Phantasmal Light represents the best and worst of Hidden Object Game (HOG) technology circa 2010. Your experience will depend on your taste in HOGs. For me, the good point was it was very hidden object heavy. There were lots of hidden object screens and you needed to solve them more than once - a classic HOG experience of that era. Then there are the classic problems of that era - low resolution objects with poor translations and lots of backtracking to find where the hidden object puzzles are reactivating. There is also the classic problem of not having an in-game map, which means clicking back and forth through a dozen screens to find the object then get back to where you need to use it. The story is stuck between the juvenile and mature in such a way to align with neither group. There are hallucinations of people dying that would be disturbing to younger players. Then, at the end of the bonus chapter, there is a giant floating purple head with a goofy voice that made me laugh out loud at how cartoonishly silly it was. The art style can be ... incongruous. The characters appear to have been animated by different artists at different times. At one point, I was briefly confused when an angry old woman with a young boy's haircut leapt into the scene unexpectedly. Turns out it was supposed to be the main character's boyfriend. I don't think I was supposed to be laughing at that moment, at least not so loudly. The game has no achievements to hunt, and if you don't like the ending of the bonus chapter, you have to replay the entire game to get a second guess at whether to choose right or left. Taken as a whole, I cannot recommend Sea Legends: Phantasmal Light when there are so many better made modern and classic HOGs on the market deserving of $5.
