Midnight Mysteries 3: Devil on the Mississippi

I did not really enjoy this hidden object game due to multiple reasons: - can't skip cut scenes or slow animations, especially annoying when those appear while you are trying to move from one location to the next (mainly an issue in the bonus chapter), - not a fan of the art style, - some of the hidden object item descriptions are just weird, especially if not a native English speaker, - collecting the clovers and ravens is quite tedious and it is extremely easy to miss one and not being able to go back to get it, - it feels quite dated. Works without issues on Linux with Proton (7.0-4).

If you're a hidden objects game fan, this is excellent! If you get stuck, there is a guide in the game. I totally enjoyed it! I've played one other Midnight Mystery, 2, the Salem Witch Trials Game. Though it wasn't a long or real challenging game, it wasn't quite as short or relatively easy as "Devil on the Mississippi". This is a combination game, my favorite kind. It has hidden object scenes, pure puzzles, and lots of inventory objectives. I counted 9 hidden object scenes and 16 puzzles in the main game, ranging from very very easy to moderately difficult. This game will please a wide range of skill levels and ages. Even if you prefer harder games, it's still fun, just short. The story line is all over the place. The main character is Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain. The game touches on real happenings in Twain's life, including the off-beat, such as that he was the first writer to write on a typewriter. And more well-known facts, such as the death of his younger brother, Henry, in a steamboat explosion. And whether or not Christopher Marlowe wrote the Shakespeare plays. In real life, Clemens published a 1907 pamphlet, titled "Is Shakespeare Dead?", in which he argues that there's no way that Shakespeare could have written Shakespeare. Also, there's the real fact of Clemens' 1894 bankruptcy, which, incidentally, in real life he paid back 100% with profits from a European reading tour. The game takes these facts and mixes them up with fantasy, which got pretty funny. Such as Christopher Marlowe making a deal with Mephistopheles, trading his soul for the chance to secretly survive his knifing and write more Shakespeare plays. The game's plot line is certainly imaginative, but it's not always easy to follow all the associations unless you already know some of the real history and controversy. In this "Collector's Edition" you get a Bonus Chapter called "Memphis-topheles" - hee hee. It had 5 hidden object scenes and 5 puzzles. You also get a full-blown strategy guide built into the game. You may not need to use it much, because puzzles can be skipped, and there's a good hint system. In a nice twist, though, you have to accumulate hints. Where ever you go in the game, click on any representation of a raven. You get one hint for each raven, and there are plenty of ravens. There are fewer hidden object scenes in "Devil on the Mississippi - Collector's Edition", compared to many combination games I've played lately. It does have more puzzles, though, but as many of these puzzles are very easy, that advantage cancels out. For comparison, you can check out " Faces " or " House of 1,000 Doors: Palm of Zoroaster (Collector's Edition) ". Game extras include an opportunity for "Unlimited Hidden Object Mode". This will kick up amount of game time in a major way. You unlock this option if you discover all 70 of the four-leaf clovers hidden in all the scenes. I liked how some objects on the hidden object list are shown in green type. This means that either the item is temporarily hidden or that the name given is a little riddle. So when the list shows "letter covering", you have to find an envelope. "Walking support" is a cane. Happy Gamer

Вообще эта идея с писателями и их биографиями очень специфична и лучше бы сделали с героями этих писателей... Тут зевал как ниногда... Локации стали еще красивее и художнику медальку, вот только большинство локаций никак не используются (1-2 объекта подними и иди дальше), Дневник тоже скучный и ничего не раскрывает, а записи идут тупо чуть ли не копи пастой диалогов и того что мы сейчас сделали... Головоломки тоже есть интересные, а есть нелогичные и тупые. В итогеут кроме картинки и похвалить не за что... Надеюсь дальше будет лучше. Mark Twain, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare in the same game? I'm on it! I couldn't leave the game for a 5 minute break. I was so hooked that I had to find out what is going on. Recommended to all HO, paranormal, mystery, literature lovers! PROS: - Complex plot with intricate themes (spies, treason, paranormal, innocence, death, the deal); - Rounded characters (even the demon has motives - he's not just there for scares); - Different situations matching the books written by the prime author of the game (this is a very nice touch!); - Creepy, eerie music with nice sounds effects; - Realistic graphics perfect for screenshots (* Go to CONS section); - Few jumpscares to give you a good jolt; - Easy to learn mechanics; - Easy to hard to obtain achievements. CONS: - I have heard that the company / studio behind the series doesn't exist anymore, that is why we don't get updates. For instance the screenshot problem can only be solved by using our own Print Screen key. If you got a Windows 10, you have to press simultaneously the Windows + PrtSc keys to take a screenshot. You then go to / Pictures on your computer / laptop and upload some to your Steam account. That's the only solution I found for the screenshot problem. Even with this disadvantage, the game is still enchanting. Play it and you won't regret it.

Story too confusing and there is much reading. Many puzzles feel random. It is better then older games still but I still need to give thumb down.

Very good like the rest of the series. If it have voice acting would be a great addition and of cause a bit better graphics.

Lovely point and click. Not enough good reviews here. The graphics are awesome, the content is historical and engaging for fans of literature, and the whole thing has a very moody tone going for it that few games in the genre match. I like all the Midnight Mysteries games, but this one is a clear step from say the first one about Poe.. These games generally have high-quality music and graphics, and the ride is never too rough in the logic department. Animation is generally spot on and makes the journey worth it. A great way to spend some time clicking things. Definitely a must have for any Mark Twain fans. There are also a surprising amount of extras in this edition. As for the negative reviews... well I don't agree at all. Very few HOG games incorporate even light historical elements, and even fewer have nice animations on a lot of the background and gameplay elements. I had these free from the internet, but decided to buy them here on Steam. On sale they are well worth the full package for the four games. Complaints are mostly petty nonsensical. This is a solid game with a great vibe. Grab a Steam Grid from the database for your LIbrary if you get it.
