The game is unbelieveably disappointing. It made a good first impression with its three distinct characters with different mechanics but it has so many cons, i wont even bother to list the few pros. Cons: - almost zero adaptability for your deck and playstyle. You can remove maybe 2-3 cards max from a 30 card deck during a run. - you can upgrade each card once but for most cards, the upgrades are so minor, its not worth to spend any resources on it. And you can also only upgrade like 3-4 cards during a run anyways. - this game has no "relics" but it has "companions" instead. Basically relics that either give passive bonuses or active abilities. Sadly, most of them are extremely uninteresting and niche and you also only have a very limited "slot" number of companions you can have. Not a very fun mechanic. Overall i dont feel like i can customize my deck much and almost all companions and even the cards i get feel weak and meaningless. If all my damaging carda deal 6 damage, is it statistically better to add another 9 damage card on top and increase my card number, or keep a smaller deck? I dont know and i really dont want this to be the core of decisionmaking. Also, you only get three energy per turn and most cards cost 1 energy or more. So you can play only 3 cards at best, sometimes only 1. And this doesnt change. You basically cant increase your energy and there are almost no cool combos that let you chain a bunch of cards together. Im so disappointed, ill go back to playing three kingdoms bloodmoon.

I played the demo first, and IMO the full release delivers on the premise I really like the setting and vibe the game went for It isn't just "Slay the Spire, but Japan" - the game has many mechanics that differentiate it from and expand on a formula of an average deckbuilder My only nitpick would be that I wish I could see the preview of cards to upgrade all at once instead of right clicking every card Overall great value for the price, will play more for sure
Full review here: https://youtu.be/LlvsvxepYuQ Talespinner is one of the freshest deckbuilding roguelikes I've played in a while. The three heroes all have unique mechanics and multiple build paths, so each run feels different. The Japanese mythology theme is fantastic, enemy encounters are clever, and the combat rewards strategy over luck. My only real complaint is that hero mechanics aren't easy to review later without resetting the tutorials, but the excellent tooltips make the learning curve manageable. If you're a fan of Slay the Spire-style games but want something that feels original, Talespinner is an easy recommendation.
I played the demo for a couple hours and I was immediately hooked. Luckily I discovered it 12 hours before the release of the full version. Each character's unique mechanics make the game very engrossing and so far I would easily put this game up there with Slay the Spire. I look forward to unlocking more and more content, and, hopefully, more content added to the game down the line.
A fun tour of Japanese mythology! Which, in case ya didn't know...basically literally any everyday item can and does become haunted in Japanese folklore! A haunted robe? Check. Demonic support column? Absolutely! Some evil mud? Yup. Umbrella demon? Obviously! Haunted sandals? They're here too! Just to name a few... So apparently if I ever visit Japan, I need to not only be on the lookout for truck-kun and other portals to isekai land, I should also watch out for literally everything to be some manner of yokai! Each of the three characters has a unique mechanic that...I at least...haven't already seen in other spire-likes...and I've played a ton of them... The upgrade system is very much spire-like, most upgrades seem to either increase the effects of a card by 50%, or reduce cost, or increase some of the character specific resources generated by the card by a point or few. They all feel meaningful and useful...or at least...as useful as any StS upgrades do. The sound and art are both rather charming. Easy to look at, easy to listen to. I find myself smiling at some of the card art, and bopping along to the soundtrack. That's...about the best one can really expect there... There are 3 different "stories" to go thru...they basicaly determine the run length and final boss. Neat thing about them tho, they each have their own unique difficulty modifiers that can be unlocked and applied. Not just "easy normal and hard", nor simply "a0 thru a20", unique and thematically suited modifiers! Like for instance, the first difficulty modifier for the yuki onna arc sticks you with a "permafrost" card in your starting deck. Not just some unrelated challenge, it actually fits the theme, I really like that part ♥ And for the price, I'm very well pleased with this game, hopefully you will be too!! Edit: One other thing that really stands out here, is that you get full access to the shop at all times. Between fights, during fights...even during events. This adds an interesting gameplay layer, being able to add or remove cards (subject to availability and affordability) during combat is a really unique touch! The shop is likely also gonna be your main source of card upgrades and removals as well as companion slots, so be aware of that going in.
Deckbuilder with 3 distinct classes that each operate differently with several different build paths. Won't take Slay the Spire out of my rotation, but it is nice to have something to slot in. Gorgeous animation, interesting creatures and boss fights. Worth your time and your cash.
While I really like the theme and idea behind it the game itself is quite bad.. Balancing is allover the place and unlike most roguelike you don't really grow, gain benefits or unlock anything that carries over - your deck is completely the same, the run depends 100% on rng and after entering stage 3-4's of every run monsters and bosses escalate and outscale you entirely. Many mechanics are poorly or not at all explained and your character is pretty much stuck dealing the same amount of damage from start to end. They implemented a level up mechanic but it only goes to level 4 and instead of increasing the characters stats you just unlock potential cards you can find in your runs - yepp, that's all.. And while you try to struggle your way through the levels enemies throw endless amounts of curses at you which in many cases can single handledly end a run because it bricks your hand fully. The leveling system and balancing need a major workover before this becomes playable. Also - the game seems to have a tendency for forgetting setting changes too :/
