I liked everything in this game except some of the quests, i don't think they are mandatory in any way tho. 4k 60fps except for the ice region and when you load into the hideout when you have 90% of gifts.
A really fun action game with likable characters and a cool story. My only problem is that you have to do 2 complete playtroughs to see everything.
The characters are fine, story is good only the combat that I dislike despite how fun it is to throw stuff with your psychic powers you can't dash away mid combo to dodge and it forces you to take damage no matter what.
Оценка сугубо субъективная: СКУКОТА Дропнул на второй главе, сорян.
Scarlet Nexus is marketed as an action-RPG, but it feels closer to a sluggish turn-based game in practice. Almost every action your character takes has long, unskippable animations. The faster animations deal very little to no damage, and because you can’t cancel recoveries, any hit interrupts you, often knocking you down and wasting even more time. The most effective 'strategy' ends up being: learn the enemy’s moveset, wait for them to whiff an attack, then punish. Rinse and repeat. It rarely feels like proper action. Even the perfect dodge feels inconsistent no matter how many times I test it, even when I’m just standing still and focusing solely on timing. The story starts with a tone I call 'Japanese logic': an ill-defined ancient evil, humanity on the brink of collapse, normal civilians having their brains gruesomely eaten by monsters to the point the government censors, and a bleak future that only promises to get worse. The protagonist is a police officer who went through brutal training, enduring unimaginable pain to gain supernatural powers that can kill him or leave permanent deep scars. Then, literally five minutes after this heavy prologue, the game completely undermines itself. Your superiors start talking about how there are so many 'cute' rookies this year, characters argue like middle-schoolers over who will be the leader of a training exercise, and there’s random flirting. Everything is delivered with typical anime dialogue and almost no expressions. Every character seems to have only 5–7 generic animations covering the full emotional spectrum. The English dub is particularly bad, though it might be a direction issue. In short, it’s impossible to take the world or the characters seriously. The game tries to be deep and dramatic but fails miserably in execution, a problem I’ve seen in many other Japanese titles. There are some cool concepts and powers, but they aren’t enough to carry the experience. I already bought it and will eventually finish it, but it wasn’t worth the price even on sale.
My experience with this game has been kinda mixed, but unfortunately it disappointed me on too many levels to give it positive review.
Story
The main idea of the story is not that bad and I could see it being interesting, the writing however seems really...inexperienced. The dialogues seem like they have been ripped out of a high-school essay. The information is delivered in dumps by the characters, with key information being repeated over and over again, even within the SAME chapter, as if the game expects the player to not pay any attention at all. It even generates simulated chat conversations between characters that you can read later that are literally written as summaries of what happened in the chapter. As if the game expects you to be unintelligent or it knows, that the plot of this game can get convoluted at times and even person paying attention may get lost. The characters themselves are really stereotypical (like childhood friend, shy girl, MILF mommy, etc.), which on its own is not a problem if you can expand those characters further, but this game does not really do that. The game does sort of have a mechanic to do that outside of the main story through bonding episodes, but those apply only to the “playable” characters and are not that great to begin with. This means that throughout the story I did not really care about the characters the game wanted me to care about and any situations within the story that were meant to be heartfelt made me feel nothing and even cringe a little. Over all the story and the characters are tolerable at first but in the second half I did start wanting for this story to be finally over. What was final nail in the coffin for the story however, was the delivery. It was just set of dialogues with PowerPoint presentation in the background. If you ever played gacha game, you know what I’m talking about. No animations (longer than 5 seconds) at all, with the exception of the final few chapters. I don’t need “constant brain simulation” in a video game, but when the writing is sub-par and the delivery is boring, it is hard to resist skipping it. I only held up because I wanted to make a review.
Gameplay
The gameplay over all wasn’t that bad, but the thing that I find strange are some of the design decisions that purposefully made it...worse? Every character, including you, has its own weapon and ability. You as a player can choose what characters fight with you, but unlike gacha games, you don’t switch characters in combat. You can only borrow their abilities and you are permanently stuck to your sword (if you play as Yuito, Kasane has a different weapon). This makes the combat feel more or less the same regardless how many abilities you have, despite there being other fully modeled, animated and voiced weapons and abilities on your companions. The “bestiary” in this game might give you feeling of combat diversity, but that is not really the case. You really only have a few boss and non-boss “stereotypes” of enemies and you sometimes don’t even notice a difference between two enemies of the same stereotype. Not to mention that very soon (after reaching friendship level 3 with a party member) you get to a meta strategy, that consists of you just spamming the character abilities every time they recharge. I did only play on normal difficulty, but I doubt that higher difficulties are really worth it because of what this game considers a “challenge”. There are repayable challenges that consist of previous boss fights, that are meant to be “harder”. But what they really are, are just the same fights but the enemy is damage sponge and it takes you 7 minutes to defeat it instead of 3 minutes. Over all it was not unplayable, but as many mentioned before me, it felt the same really fast. Enemies with “more moves” and option to play as other party members, thus having access to other weapon types and moves would definitely spice things up.
The World (& graphics)
The overall design of the world is nice. It fits the theme well and all of the locations were unique and distinct enough. The graphics are “simple” and are comparable to games like Genshin Impact. But that is not a bad thing. For anime-styled game it is more than enough and it allows the game to run well on underpowered hardware like Steam Deck.
Final thoughts
I don’t want to hate on this game too much. I can see that the devs wanted to make a good game and good intentions with hard work are admirable. They did however made some bad design decisions in some of the games aspects and the writing team might need a bit more experience. I played through the game once, and I don’t really think I will again, which is a shame, since the game is deliberately designed with 2 playthroughs in mind. The character you choose at the start has its own path in the story and to get the full picture you are supposed to play through both. I just don’t think I am interested enough to go though all of this again. Is this game worth buying? Well...on a discount, why not? Maybe you will like it, I just wish I could like this game more.
