Resident Evil Village starts by feeling like a much less grounded and far more ridiculous follow-up to Resident Evil 7. It has werewolves, vampires, grotesque mutants, elaborate castles, giant factories, and boss fights that sometimes feel closer to an action movie than survival horror. I initially preferred the smaller, more familiar setting of 7, but Village steadily won me over and ended up being an excellent game. The presentation is phenomenal. The environments are insanely detailed, the textures and lighting constantly made me stop to look around, and the game has a huge amount of visual variety. Every major area has its own identity, and revisiting the central village with new keys and tools keeps exploration feeling fresh. I also liked the map showing whether I had completely searched a room, although that feature repeatedly encouraged me to obsess over some piece of ammunition hidden in a corner. The game regularly changes what kind of horror experience it wants to provide. Some sections emphasize exploration and puzzles, others throw large numbers of enemies at you, and one especially tense stretch removes the comfort of fighting back and becomes far more frightening than I expected. The puzzles generally felt creative and satisfying to work through. Combat was fun too, especially once I started experimenting with mines, explosives, weapon upgrades, and the sniper rifle, but several enemies absorbed a ridiculous amount of ammunition. A few encounters could also be cheesed by abusing doorways or preparing traps with knowledge from a previous death. The later portions become extremely action-heavy. At one point it genuinely feels like Resident Evil temporarily turns into Call of Duty, and the finale fully embraces enormous monsters and spectacle. I still think Resident Evil 7 had the stronger grounded horror atmosphere, but Village handles its constant escalation better than I expected. Even when the story becomes completely insane, I remained invested in understanding what was happening. The ending pulled the entire game together for me. The story reveals genuinely surprised me, clarified details that had bothered me since Resident Evil 7, and gave the protagonist’s journey far more emotional weight than I expected. By the end, I wasn’t merely enjoying the combat and environments. I cared about the characters, and the conclusion hit hard. It has occasional UI glitches, a narrow FOV, some confusing navigation, bullet-sponge enemies, and moments where the logic exists purely to keep the player on the intended path. None of those problems came close to ruining it. Village looks incredible, keeps introducing new ideas, rewards exploration, has a strong story, and rarely allows the experience to become stale. I’m glad I played it, and it left me wanting to continue with the series.
