RE3 OG (1999) is far superior in every way to the terrible 2020 remake. I played the PS1 version back in the day and replaying the GOG port on Steam. RE3 OG is an amazing game especially with the HD Backgrounds, Character, and Menu Mods. I love the Clock Tower, Park, and Dead Factory. 10/10
Playing the classic RE game 28 years after its release for the first time. My thoughts
‘Nemesis’ is probably the favorite Resident Evil entry for the majority of old-school players, and I’ve never heard nothing but praises about this game. So here come I, the new gen gamer, who fell in love with the RE franchise after the revolutionary 7’s release. I’ve played (and replayed) all of the series’ entries this summer inspired by the gorgeous Veronica Remake trailer announcement, and only one game was left untouched by me, RE3. Several reasons for that: I never felt super close to Jill as a character, despite her having an enormous and slightly mental fanbase, I was never really immersed in her Raccoon City storyline, and relevancy-wise, RE3 was strongly associated with the lazy and hastily-baked remake that seemed so off to me that I didn’t even finish it back in 2020. That’s why I had zero nostalgia or any biases when I decided to finally jump into the original RE3. My introduction to the game was NOT smooth at the start. Instead of isolated, lonely but eerily homely RE1 and RE2 locations, I got the messy overwhelming Raccoon City streets, full of fire and annoying hoards of zombies. The scare factor was reduced to the ‘enemies grabbing you whenever you move’ factor, which only fueled my annoyance towards the gameplay and level design decisions. The third game moved much deeper into the ‘action’ zone than its predecessors, which is logical to see knowing how RE4 and RE5 turned out to be. And well, blatant action was never my favorite part of RE games. As I moved further through the city’s convoluted map, I met the (in)famous Nemesis for the first time, and that’s when I got to another… annoyance-inducing part of this game: dodge mechanic. Oh, the dodge mechanic. A few words about that. I started the game on the Hard Mode (the only alternative being Easy, as Normal option was absent this time for some reason), and I also decided to follow the path where you fight Nemesis instead of fleeing most of the times. It’s not only slightly changes the ending, but also allows you to get the special item drops from him which sounded great on paper. Here’s what wasn’t great though: Nemesis being a ‘one move, one-shot’ type of enemy. So Capcom decided to add some new stuff after RE2 – the more ambitious map, the gunpowder mixing system, and the DODGE FREAKING MECHANIC. It was not implemented smoothly, and it did not work very well with the tank controls. Combine it with Nemesis, the fast-pace, grab spamming bullet sponge cake that can just stomp you to death in some random corner, and you’ll get pure frustration and ‘Why do I even bother’ cocktail of feelings. As I was pushing through the first 40% of the game, I was thinking to myself: ‘There’s no way this entry is called the perfect RE game by fans…’ However, as I got past the R.P.D. part (yeah, you get into the exact same Police Department location from RE2 which really surprised me!), things eased up a bit. I started getting new weapons which finally made Nemesis encounters less of a stressful time-consuming chore, the plot became more intriguing, and the locations surprised me a lot in a good way. From the technical point of view, Capcom pushed the classic RE engine to the absolute limit while making this game, so I can easily understand how it was seen as revolutionary at the time of its release. The map is HUGE given what year RE3 came out in, like RE4 and RE8 kind of huge, which seemed almost surreal to me combined with the same clunky tank controls and fixed angle system. It’s almost hilarious how much the R3make is missing in comparison with the almost 30 year old game. The gameplay choices were really ambitious as well, although just as I said, some of those choices did not seem perfectly compatible with the game’s existing controls. But it showed how Capcom were eager to evolve with each new RE game and try something fresh to add to the already amazing formula, and that’s what I really admire. To sum it all up after I watched the ending credits: this game was not as perfect as many nostalgia fueled fans claimed to be. It absolutely has some tedious and frustrating moments if you decide to follow the harder, riskier routes, but it also has a lot of greatness after all to soothe your wounds. Nemesis can be pretty obnoxious in gameplay, but he’s so visually and conceptually impressive and works really well as the game’s main spooky gimmick. I can easily imagine a lot of young kids not being able to sleep at night after playing the OG RE3 and hearing his eerie ‘S.T.A.R.S…’ howls, ha ha. Did this game really pass the test of time almost 30 years later? Well, not entirely so, but it still aged very, very well given how many things changed in the gaming landscape. The atmosphere is really good, the music is lovely, Jill is a baddie for real, Carlos is there, Wesker is not (what a pity!), and Barry is always the GOAT. I’m giving this game 5 S.T.A.R.S., Rank A. Jill, you did a fine job!

Capcom is adding DRM Enigma Protector to their back catalog of games. Prevents modding, cheat engine, and reduces performance by up to 10-15 fps with stutters. (Also Capcom being hostile to Valve's testing of their games for the Steam Deck makes them major ♥♥♥♥ heads while I'm at it) Go eff yourself, Capcom. I will not be buying future Biohazard titles due to you wanting to install Malware (hello Super [strike]Dynamic Cooking Time[/strike] Ultra HD Remix Rootkit Fighter 5! being the start of this) in the attempt to fight cheating in mostly single-player titles. (Emulate or if you MUST buy Biohazard 1-3, get them off Good Old Games [the porters of THIS version], it's literally the same game without the EnigmaDRMalware.dll AND supports Cloud Saves, for whatever baffling reason GOG/Capcom didn't put them in this depot: https://www.gog.com/en/game/resident_evil_3 )
You thought that nemesis was scary in the remake, son? Well, you shall know true horror and it will chill you to the bone even long after your first playthrough has run it's course. You want S.T.A.R.S.? I'll give you S.T.A.R.S.! also you can skip the door opening animations now!
"You want S.T.A.R.S.? I'll give you stars!"
(Que frase insana da porra, eu me arrepiei todinho bicho.)
Great game and still lives up to everything. However, there's a serious issue with this and the RE2 game. Once you've played either one of them for 5-6 hours total, they both will start crashing hardcore after about 5-10 mins of play. Rebooting, reinstalling, etc. Nothing helps this.
INTRO:
A timeless classic. A game that will keep you on your heels from beginning to end. I can talk your ears off about how incredible this game is. This was my childhood game and one that I will never forget. It will forever have a special place in my heart. Playing it right after completing it's prequel, I can firmly attest that this game stands shoulder to shoulder with it. It's crazy to think this started out as a spin-off and ended up giving us one of the most iconic villains in gaming history all while improving upon it's sequel in nearly every way.
PROS:
+ The finally introduced auto aim. I mentioned before in my review of Resident Evil 2 that it wasn't a big deal not having it and didn't change my review of the game, but having it in it's sequel along with it's new dodge mechanic it absolutely makes the game feel more snappy and action oriented. The game introduces a new targeting system that allows you to toggle from enemy to environmental hazards and back to enemies. + The 180 degree turn is here - another quality of life feature that makes the game feel fast and fluid, especially with so many tight corridors and alleyways that take place with in the level design. + Smoother up and down stair transitions for Jill and enemies. Another great quality of life feature that makes the game much better at traversing. + Hunters are back! Along with a whole host of enemy varieties. This game turned up the difficulty a couple notches because there were so many situations where I had to maneuver and backtrack my way around hordes of zombies with so little of ammo I had in the first half of the game. I was genuinely having to master the dodge mechanic because this game is relentless when it comes to throwing more enemies at then you do ammo. + Speaking of the dodging, the game introduces you with a new "emergency dodge" mechanic that allows you to dodge an attack within a certain frame that will give Jill a quicker shooting animation if used or to quickly run away. It is surprisingly a really great feature that is hard to master, but once you get the timing down, it greatly improves the game and difficulty curve. An underrated gameplay mechanic that truly sets it apart from it's predecessors. + Brain Suckers were a pretty cool and creepy new enemy that presented new challenges along with it's cousin variant Drain Deimos. Ugly looking monsters that gave you problems if taken lightly. + The gunpowder mixing tool was a great new game mechanic that gave the player the choice to choose the type ammo he wanted to use when needed. It also enhanced your handgun and shotgun ammo after a certain amount of uses. I really enjoyed the developers take their hands off the wheel and letting me decide on which ammo I wanted to make - whether it be for my favorite weapon I was using or in a desperate need of handgun ammo. It rewarded players who were able to conserve their ammunition and create the more powerful ammunition for boss battles. Another great feature and somewhat gets overlooked that defines Re3. + Randomized puzzles, item locations and Nemesis choice system gave the game some replay value without mindlessly going through the motions. + Level design and locations. I thoroughly enjoyed my time running through the streets of Raccoon City and all it's varies side locations. There were so many instances where backtracking rewarded you with lots of items and random set pieces that you could miss if you weren't adventures. + Mercenaries Mode is such a classic staple in the series. It all started here and it's still a blast to play even to this day. Being rewarded infinite ammo for all your weapons in the game is the cherry on top. + NEMESIS! There isn't anything I can say that hasn't been said before - this is one of, if not, the greatest stalker enemies of all time. He is my favorite in the series and one of the most memorable enemies of all of gaming. He is relentless and makes boss encounters so much more dynamic. He is the highlight of the game and single handedly makes this game the most challenging of the OG trilogy. The way he chases and transitions from area to area hunting you down ruthlessly is the pinnacle of survival horror. + Nemesis weapon and item drops after defeating him on hard mode is a great feature and rewards those who want to challenge themselves in taking down Nemesis at every encounter.
CONS:
- No multi character selection like it's past predecessors and with that no zapping system, but we did get quick time events that added some minor replay value, but this was a pretty big let down if you ask me. The zapping system in Re2 was what made that game truly special. - No 3D models and secret compartments for items to examine. Same issue as I had in Re2. - No Lickers!? Bummer. - No FMV introduction to the Brain Suckers! Boy was I disappointed by the lack of a cool intro that the previous titles gave for the first Zombie, Hunter and Licker. Such a missed opportunity if you ask me. - No easy options menu in-game to change input binding like in Re1 and 2. You have to hold down ctrl and F1 I believe. Such as weird feature to leave out when they had it available in it's pc counterpart.
OUTRO:
I knew going back into this game I was in for a hell of a ride. I played this game back on the PlayStation and GameCube so many times. I knew I would love it, but replaying it right after playing it's highly rated big brother Re2, I was surprised on how much it actually improved gameplay wise to an already fantastic blueprint it's prequel laid out for it. For it to be left out of the conversation when it comes to the best game in the series, I personally believe it surpasses Re2 when it comes to gameplay and features. The atmosphere and soundtrack is nearly a tie and the only things setting this apart from Re2 is it's lack of a memorable location (Spencer Mansion and Police Department) and zapping system, but it makes up for it with it's continued pressure of enemies consistently pushing you from place to place while being pursued by Nemesis. This game stands on it's own two feet and is one of my favorite games of all time.
