Gunbrella, a game in which an overabundance of attention to the story attempts to disguise a walking simulator with crappy enemy design.
This game is in my opinion not even reasonable on sale. I'd really like to start with the good, because I really love what this game got right. The color scheme and the atmosphere, (but not the design, the slums and houses and everything else look like what AI thinks steampunk is) on the first cutscene, plus the prospect of a gun umbrella, plus the music felt decent, and I appreciate the fact that this can run on nearly anything. That's it, really. There's nothing else that I can salvage out of the game. First of all, there's like three different UIs, for the pause menu, shop menu and the gameplay one (though that's understandable), but all of them have different, odd control choices that seem laughably uncoordinated. I remarkably hate the shopping one, and the fact that there's hardly anything to buy, like two things on each vendor at the start, like apples and rifle bullets. It feels like I'm in a breadline and it's excruciating. Second, the gameplay revolves around moving around with decent controls, you can dash and block, jump, and shoot. Not bad, more on that later. But there's like four different enemies on every place, and if you die because you're so distracted because of how boring this game is you'll have to go back to the start of the stage, and watch the horrible, long animation of the train stopping again before you picked the save point bench/bed whatever with a long save animation that further screws the pacing, I swear, I can't tolerate talking to the pill vendor so he can give me a passcode for a dude to let me in the sewer, to bring this stupid weirdo three rats from that damned place so he can give me his train ID so I can go to the next town, it's a glorified chore simulator, feels like I'm attempting to play Oblivion all over again Third, the combat, which, I point out, is the main concern of the game, feels like playing an old Zelda game, but you can only thrust cardinally, and the enemies are genuinely stupid and can shoot both cardinal and diagonally. It feels seriously incongruent, and the whole parrying thing feels nearly a waste of time and health when you can just not get on the way of whatever dunce you're fighting. It feels like whoever made this game was more worried on making 2/3 characters you can speak with hate crude oil, despite them littering everywhere like animals, while he's shoving a black handful of it on his mouth, straight out of the pumpjack to get high. I absolutely hate how this game massacred this fantastic idea and apologize for not having any alternatives, other than flash games from two decades ago about Mario having a gun. You'd hardly believe that this is the same game that's getting sold on the trailer.
The art and design of everything is amazing, and the movement is fun. Now that we're done with the pros, lets get to the cons: - The story is fine at the beginning, but there's a sudden time skip, and then it sends you to a new map, which then inexplicably collapses. It feels like they wanted to do more, but suddenly decided to cut 1/2 the game. - You're given 7 types of ammo, 1 is the normal ammo, 1 is special for a specific type of enemy, and the other 5 are completely unnecessary, and are less effective than the normal ammo, while also being limited in quantity. - The umbrella part of the game is unneeded for any encounter and doesn't work very well - Each boss has only 1-2 attacks, and just spams those attacks. You can directly face tank every encounter - there isn't any enemy variety - you need to play the game through 3 times to get all achievements. Overall, I enjoyed the first half of the game, but the second half is really mediocre. The combat gets super repetitive, half of the game's name sake barely works, the bosses are boring sandbags, and it feels like there are large sections of story we didn't see. Although I would like to give a positive review, this game is heavily brought down by these aspects.
While I do recommend this game, there are issues I have with it. It is fun to go around and shoot enemies with the titular Gunbrella, the movement is pretty good in this game and it has some good pixel art. But I kinda just wish there was more to this game, some things would’ve benefited from more story focus, I find early bosses are a slog to fight (not hard, just take a while), and the gameplay got to its best when I was one shotting enemies. This felt closer to the trailer, I honestly wish this game was closer to Katana Zero in being a “one shot guys, reflect bullets, but be careful you die fast” type game But it did grow on me, and it had a good curve in gameplay expectations, tho I will say, keep the gem, trust me on that
Can't remap movement, lol
For a quick review: This game is okay, pretty boring. Interesting mechanics but bogged down with millennial and woke writing. For a long review: I got this game because it looked interesting. I didn't look into the game before getting it which I regret deeply now after playing it for around 4 hours. So what happens. You find your wife dead (game doesn’t bring up your child that has been kidnapped until 3 hours in the game). You start on a boat with a [Cultured Individuel]. You do some exploring to mostly empty maps with between 2-4 enemies per screen. Yes, a game about a cool gun with almost nothing to shoot stuff with (except boxes). You come to a village with more [Cultured Individuals] that the game likes to show are more intelligent than the mcs own kind. Stuff happens and look at that, the mayor is a stereotypical evil guy. I should have refunded the game then and there but I had hope for it to be a one of. Alas the game writers had other plans. Skipping forward a bit I meet the goons for the big bad, two of your kind hassling a [Cultured Individuel]. Cool, that’s strike two. I started to notice more and more of that stuff but still I remained ignorant. The gunplay is atrocious, you only have one gun but instead of letting you make it a good weapon they let you change between ammo and upgrade damage and reload speed (mind you, you can’t hold to shoot. You have to click EVERY SINGLE TIME, lovely). Anyways, the ammo types suck, the only useful one is the one against the ghosts which is only useful for those type of enemies.I wish game stopped doing lowrange shotguns, it’s not fun, hey sometimes realistic can be fun. Oh yeah, for all the people who hates missing stuff, skip this garbage, if you want to get max health you MUST choose specific interaction options while talking to people and don’t get me started on parts of the map becoming inaccessible. I first noticed it in the junkyard, I was lucky that I found the secret before a trashcube blocked it of. Later at the prison you can miss a bunch of stuff, if you don’t check everything. I don’t wanna recount all of the woke stuff but here is a small list that you could expect: Strong and independent women Weak/beta men Multiple [Cultured Individuels] Kids that hate their parents “Evil” Priest and self-hating priest. “We ruined this planet because of fossil fuel” Friendzoning Some lady you helped now hating men I haven’t decided if I want to finish it. If I do, I won't come back to change my review. The game has already done its damage and my trust for it to be a good game is gone. 3/10
An enjoyable short "metroidvania-lite" that kept me interested until I finished it. I think that the only reason why this wasn't more popular was because, well, it's short. There was enough room to improve the longevity with more places to visit, more upgrades (for traversing for example) and more side quests to do. Some won't enjoy it because it's too easy, but for me it was fine. I don't need a frustrating experience to enjoy a game. Now, my minor complain is how the game handles the ending. Somewhat spoilers below: [spoiler]I don't think that a smaller side quest should be the reason why the player gets the good ending, especially when the player ends up losing one of the half health hearts by not choosing the presented options... [/spoiler] Anyway, glad that I played this.
pretty fun! it's really really short, and some of the story towards the end gets nonsensical. still worth the time i played, though!
