Repressed is a short emotional narrative experience with interesting puzzle platforming design. The gaming mechanics needs more variety, but its visual style with thoughtful story works well. #casual For more quick reviews please follow my curator.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOPTyIafazY Conceptually, Repressed is exactly the type of game that appeals to me. Delving into the repressed depths of the mind provide plenty of opportunities to tell an immensely profound and intriguing story. In practice however, it’s actually quite bland and uninteresting. Mechanically uninventive and stylistically dull, there was little that kept me engaged besides the passable, rudimentary story. Repressed is a title that’s hard to recommend for anyone besides those that are completely sold on the minimalist aesthetic, shadow centric gameplay, or the creative concept.
Read the full review here: https://saveorquit.com/2019/09/26/review-repressed/ On paper, this is a game I should like - it's a game about exploring psychological themes with an atmospheric minimalist art style. Too bad they don't seem to explore anything beyond the barest surface-level reading. Minimalist art styles in games like Inside are used to convey the mood the game wants you to be in through its bleak and dark color tone. Repressed uses simple black and white forms seemingly just because it is easier and cheaper or because other popular games did it. The game suffers because the art direction is SO incapable of delivering any of the mood or story that the voiceover narration has to carry the entire story, including telling you how you are feeling about any random object you come across. It's the very definition of telling, not showing, and for what should be a walking simulator mood piece, it's failing to live up to its most basic strength as a game to not use its visual and interactive elements to IN ANY WAY further the story. The narration, then, somehow manages to squeeze 15 minutes of story into a three-hour game. Being forced into a position of "interpreting" the utterly barren, featureless geometric shapes that are copy-pasted to fill out the utterly generic "journey to the center of the mind" of the nameless main character, the only way to deliver the "shocking swerve" this story relies upon for "suspense" is to have the narrator outright lie to you about what you feel about your own memories. Without anything in the "landscape" of what is supposedly your mind to provide a context for what you feel about anything, being told you like one thing, but then being told that - HAHA! - you actually hated it all along just makes you feel like someone is yanking your chain, and you gradually just tune out everything the voiceover lady says until she finally gets her story straight. When she does, the story is basically the most generic "I go to therapy because" story you can think of, implicitly spoiled by merely looking at what the "hidden memory" achievements are. Every character is portrayed utterly without nuance. Every character is either a pure avatar of good or evil, with no nuance or humanity. Technically speaking, the game runs just fine. The people at the bottom of the surprisingly long list of credits were absolutely doing their jobs, and could clearly make much better games. The problem is that the people at the top made all the wrong calls for design direction. It's like they saw that Limbo was a celebrated indie game that used monochromatic art direction, so they thought just using monochromatic colors and outright literally stating it was about someone taking psychoanalysis would automatically make it just as deep and meaningful. If a camel is a horse designed in committee, Repressed is a "psychological mystery" designed by a committee of executives that only glanced at screenshots of other games with that label.
Beautiful. Haunting. Surreal… And runs on Linux! Repressed is a wonderful little gem with a really cool hook: you play as a shadow! Okay no, this isn’t the first game to play with shadows, but I hope the trailer video shows how this comes from a bit of a different perspective. Speaking of perspective, it’s a bit of a struggle to get your head around at first. My brain wanted to see the character when looking at the shadow, but that’s just not how light works. I think the thing that tripped me up the most was realizing that I have momentum, and calculating the momentum of a character that you can only see the shadow of is.. well it took some practice. However, I’m happy to say that after just a short while of messing around in the very opening area, my brain sort of ‘clicked’ and all the wonky movement made sense. If you immediately drop into the game and feel disoriented and out of control, set aside 5 or 10 minutes to just meander around the first few meters of the opening and get to grips with the way movement works before diving into the story. Once I got into the story I was hooked, as I have a bit of a soft spot for narratively driven linear experiences. The voice acting is lovely, a very fitting voice for the tale being told. Equally impressive is the fluidity of the dialogue as it’s my understanding that the game was developed in Poland, and I would have never guessed it was not made by native English speakers until I saw the names in the credits. Mechanically, I think my expectations got the better of me in the early game. Because of the surreal visuals and the shadow themes, I immediately saw this game as a hybrid of Antechamber and Contrast. In that spirit I tried to throw my shadow against a surface in the distance to ‘warp’ there.. this very quickly led me into the abyss below. Chapter 3 saw the introduction of some proper puzzle mechanics to do with shadow manipulation and they are super cool. Nothing ever felt too obtuse or overly complicated, but seeing the results of manipulating the shadows was really intriguing. I would love to see this principal explored in a more freeform environment. As this plot is self contained, it would not make sense to have a sequel, but a future title building off this tech would be really interesting. A last thought – no spoilers I promise – but if you struggle with mental illness or have had experience with domestic problems, be aware that this title may hit a bit close to home. I still think it’s a beautiful game, but maybe would be best played with breaks between chapters if you’re sensitive to these kinds of themes. A bit quirky to control, a bit tough on the ol’ feels, and a great gem that has gotten swallowed up in the sea of indie on steam!
Play as a shadow on the ground, platforming through memories to uncover truths and undo trauma. Interesting story and rather unique gameplay. A great little emotional adventure. https://youtu.be/ASvUHNGt2rc
Repressed – A Unique Take on the Puzzle-Platformer Genre
Overall, Repressed is a very mixed bag. The elements of the game that it does well, such as the unusual concept, the puzzles and the mechanics, even the complimentary visuals, are great and bring something new to the genre. However, I personally believe that these things could have been used really effectively to communicate a narrative to the player in a much more satisfying way. As it stands, the story element of the game detracts from the experience for me and I’d even go so far as to say it felt lazy and is detrimental to a title that could potentially have been a ground-breaking little puzzle game. I did enjoy the problem-solving aspects of the game, but it has a number of flaws and tries too hard to be more than it needs to be. As such, I can’t recommend the game at full price but would suggest picking it up on sale if you’re a fan of puzzle-platformers as it does still have something to offer! I'm not sure whether I recommend this or not, but as I had to choose, I said yes. There is some true creativity on show here, but also a lot of filler and uninspired design going on. I don't regret buying it on sale, but if I had bought it full price I would not have been happy. Slow to start, it gets great in terms of puzzle mechanics in chapter 2 and the start of chapter three, but goes downhill from there. I fell this could have done with a LOT more polish, and a LOT more thought, and maybe a map system or other way to have a better view of how your manipulation of buttons changes the world. There is a LOT of running back and forth because the area you are meant to be affecting isn't currently visible or even loaded in. Overall though, I did have fun streaming this game for my little Twitch community, and we had a load of fun joking about it's rather poor story and conception of theraphy.
Bardzo długo nie grałem w tego typu grę, cała oprawa artystyczna jest bardzo oryginalna i świeża, a sam pomysł ze spadaniem w cień niesamowity. Twórcy odrobili zadanie domowe i wykorzystali tą mechanikę naprawdę w pełnym wymiarze. Kudos!
A stark minimalist art style. Fantastic voice acting. Unique, intuitive platforming. Interesting premise and story. I love everything about this game. https://youtu.be/pg9XnyRSQkk
