Pros: Pervasive depressing atmosphere Puzzles are fun, especially towards the end Good soundtrack Existential crisis benches Has shock boots Cons: Walking felt a *tad* too slow Puzzles can have fail states requiring a checkpoint reload A bit hard to grok some of the story Inventory and crafting can be tedious; a few times I didn't realise what combinations of items I hadn't tried and it nearly made me quit (exacerbated by no gamefaqs being out yet) Some hacking riddles were too hard and had to brute force No fire boots Despite the cons I enjoyed the game and it definitely succeeded at what it was trying to do. I do wish the character's turmoil had more representation in the gameplay (e.g. like when you want to read that note and the character refuses). 7/10
TLDR: Game tries to be edgy but ultimately says a lot without actually saying anything. Would recommend on sale. I enjoyed this game. The core game play is good, if not a bit repetitive. The puzzles are just the right difficulty and vary in type. The game pace is slow, but atmospheric, and the music adds a lot to the overall feel. It is an enjoyable game, for the most part, but where it falls short is the story. I streamed this game for 20+ people. Not a single one of us truly understood what was going on. The game has several pieces of story that do not mesh at all well together. The pages of the book you collect throughout the game reveal nothing but superficial thought expressed via superfluous text. The random locations (especially the M18 base) include stories that seem completely disconnected and almost a waste of time to explore. The story is so disjointed and confusing in an obvious but poor attempt to be vague that the only reason I finished the game was because I was hoping I might FINALLY get some good answers at the end. Nope. The ending is as dissatisfying as the rest of the game. As for dealing with suicide and depression, the game attempts to deliver an emotional expose via the main character, but ultimately also fails at really going further than superficial 'this is all my fault' drivel. That being said, the game is very enjoyable as a puzzle game. It's relaxing. The music is nice. The settings are well done. The graphics are good for what you get. It's a well-made game, but if you're looking for any sort of satisfying story or character development or exploration into depression, you're going to get a disjointed mess instead. Buy it if you want some good puzzle time. 6/10 from me.
The Thin Silence is a well-crafted game that weaves the intricacies of mental disorder into a story-line of recovery and self-worth. However, it also hiccups in its characters and the ramblings of its self-deprecating government. The Thin Silence starts you off as Ezra, who seems to suffer from PTSD, depression, anxiety, self-doubt, and more that snowball one after the other. Ezra was also a Minister of Borders during a war that seemed to end the world. The player’s goal is to keep moving forward in order to emerge from the underground darkness in which you find yourself. This game relies heavily on the use of allegory to underscore precisely what kind of state Ezra is in at particular times. The developers wanted to use the world that Ezra is in to depict what is going on in his mind. Ezra sees things that aren’t there and speaks with himself in the darkness about knowing things, committing horrible atrocities, and not going back or thinking about what he’s done. In the beginning, Ezra is underground, but as the game progresses, it goes through stages of different illnesses that could be affecting the character. We start off by shutting everything out; we are lost in darkness. The act that follows is bright and starts to touch on Ezra’s self-worth, and the identity of who his comrades-in-arms were. Ezra is thrown into despair again because of his conflicting thoughts over getting out completely free. Thrust down underground again, he accepts the past and what happened. The game takes the highs and lows of each state of mind and accompanies them with dark and dimly lit or bright and radiant environments. The feelings of the character are considered at all times, which shows in the background with text and visuals alike. As we learn of Ezra, his illness, and his story, we also see an attempt and a desire to attack the government in some way throughout the game. The Thin Silence suffers from taking a broad topic and trying to redirect it too often. It seeks to speak politically of government failings, the trope of chaos begets order and vice versa. Since it also covers broad spectrums of mental illness and political topics, the story and its original meaning seem to be lost sometimes, especially in a game that only takes roughly four hours to beat. Not only are you reliving war, you are also watching it through the eyes of a mentally ill person. But when the game becomes too focused on what the government is doing wrong and overthrowing it, you begin to feel like you are in a different game than the one you were just playing. The Thin Silence was built around the idea of a clinically depressed PTSD human, not government reform. Yet, the topic of reform comes in at two critical moments of the game. One of them is in a collectible journal. The other is when you finally meet Ithaca, an old companion of Ezra, who calls for reform and asks Ezra to help. The game mentions Ithaca at the beginning, and she seems to be someone special, someone who directs the flow and narrative of who Ezra is. For her focus to be a corrupt government instead of pure loss or love is tangential to what this game is really about. Characters are essential to the overarching story due to their unique connections to Ezra. However, the pixel graphics didn’t convey the characteristics you’d expect from influential people. They lacked visual impact equal to their noteworthy appearances in the text. One of the most phenomenal parts of this game was the crafting system. To make a simple crafting system for such a short game felt unnecessary at first but soon became one of the most excellent parts. To bypass individual puzzles, you need tools that you can craft out of three items or less. These items range from a boot, rope, or battery. By combining eight or so items, you could make a plethora of tools that each has its use or sometimes many uses. Once you craft the necessary gear, the game’s puzzles are no challenge. The most substantial problem, other than figuring out which tools could make what, is walking everywhere in this world. With no speed up button, the game forces you to take things nice and tediously slow. The Thin Silence really shows off its skills when you are watching the world change around you to match exactly what Ezra is going through. It tells a story of hope and meticulously explains it. Even when it treads off the beaten path, it manages to bring you back. The game’s focus lacks, but its message does not. - 7/10 - virtualhaven.org
The Thin Silence is a tale of desperation, depression, sadness, and an attempt to overcome these feelings. It isn’t a game for the faint of heart, as it explores these themes profoundly and thoroughly. In fact, The Thin Silence even has a trigger warning at the beginning of the game for those who may be affected. Keep that in mind before delving into this review. The game places you in the shoes of Ezra. Ezra was once the leader of a land that has fallen to civil war. The man blames himself for the division between his people, and for not being able to prevent it. He has since removed himself from his kingdom and has chosen to live out his days in darkness to deal with his pain. It is slow. Absolutely. This slowness can take some patience. With patience comes appreciation, and appreciate I do for what this game stands for and wishes to portray in the video gaming community. This level of emphasis makes it hard to root against, despite its shortcomings from a gameplay perspective. Neither a "Walking simulator" nor a riveting experience the likes of revolutionary titles of the past, The Thin Silence encourages help in the form of a story dedicated to a man with a past which incurs soulful weeping. And that's okay. + Effortlessly encouraging + The writing is interesting and engaging + Looks and sounds very good - Character is far too slow; discourages exploration - Lost potential for extra crafting possibilities - Human characters could use more defining Read the full review at https://www.keengamer.com/article/18318_the-thin-silence-review
Killing in the Name The Thin Silence propose un gameplay plutôt simple de prime abord. It's the End my Friend Au final, The Thin Silence est une vraie réussite vidéo-ludique qui mérite véritablement que l'on s'y penche dessus.
Really interesting pixel art side-scroller + Artistic graphics + Interesting story + Side-scroller I recommend it.
