Profundum bietet also reichlich Abwechslung. Unfortunately the Knuckles are also faded in when the player's hands are visible, i.e. we explore the excavation site with the controllers in our hands. The controllers should definitely be faded out. Another annoying thing is that despite the great grabbing function of the index controllers we still have to grab the Knuckles with the trigger button. This should also be changed or selectable. Profundum by Black Mouse is a steampunk inspired adventure game with the main focus on physically based puzzles, mainly from gear constructions, but later on we also have to deal with steampunk pipes to be able to operate paddle wheels. In the course of the game we even have to deal with a strong runner, which we have to control in the sweat of our brow. So Profundum offers plenty of variety. The storytelling works in the game via scattered notes that are presented in a really good English. And, of course, the really great and handsome graphics in Profundum. Profundum has really detailed textures to offer. The physics shows what it's made of right from the start; can the player find a rope there that behaves physically almost realistically when you interact with it. Unfortunately, this also applies to the disgusting spider webs that will soon follow. The game environment is a mysterious, deserted but well-equipped excavation site, where we take an elevator to go deeper and deeper. But in order to get the platform going, we have to supply it with electricity each time. To do this, more and more complex mechanisms have to be put together. It's great to see how chains and gears fit into each other exactly and start moving so that we can escape from the sometimes trapped rooms. But who dismantled all these mechanisms? The story revolves around finding out what happened to the missing archaeologists who worked there. The deeper we go into the cave system, the more often we encounter dead bodies... Profundum is a wonderful puzzle title, which I can only recommend to every puzzle and escaperoom friend.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
Note: Received free key as part of the Steam Curator Connect program to review game This is a tough game for me to review because I experienced so many frustrating moments in this game to get to the end line. Most of that frustration was due to the game's overall clunkiness. I think this could be a good, solid game with some polish and updates to improve the gamer experience. It took me over 5 hours to finish this game where it really is about a 3 hour game. So what is this game? It's a very logical puzzle game where you use common sense to the old steampunk contraptions working to get to the next level. For example, you find the cogs in the level and then arrange them to get them all spinning together to light up the elevator or you arrange pipes in a certain order so that you get the wheel spinning to light up the elevator or put the electro magnetic coils in close proximity to light up the elevator. There are 13 total levels and each level either introduces a new mechanic or builds upon the prior one. For the most part, the game uses this logic all the way to its conclusion. The puzzles themselves are easy enough to solve, however, the trick is in the execution. These are not brain twisters, but having to put chains on some of the cogs and get them all in unison is quite the physical task. Some levels have a lot of moving parts that you have to get right and it takes a while to physically move them all correctly. I would say these puzzles are more physical than they are mental. It almost feels like you're in essence a handyman in some levels. You have full locomotion and snap turning. You can even press down on your joystick to crouch to make picking things off the ground that much easier. The graphics are pretty good (except for the very end that looks bad). There are notes strewn about the gameworld that tell the story of what happened. The sounds are okay. The problem is that so many of the gameplay elements are just frustrating to execute. Putting the chains on the cogs was so frustrating. Having my spider vehicle contraption go nuclear and having to restart was frustrating. Framerates take a big drop in the last few levels. Using the key to open the door / open a cabinet was almost impossible for me (it took many attempts to finally get it to work).
BTW, what was the lighter for after all? I don't think I ever used it ... or my logbook.
I did have fun when things worked smoothly. The game is atmospheric. It is different than most puzzle games just because of the focus on physics. With some fine tuning, I would rate this game higher. Rate 6/10.
Game provided via the Steam Curator program. VR puzzle game. I had fun while playing it! + puzzles fit well into VR + visuals are fine, sound effects are fine, nothing too spooky but still leaves you with feeling that something can happen any moment Recommended if you like relaxing walking simulator puzzle game in VR.
It looks waaay better in VR than in the images. Very immersive puzzle game with gears, pipes, etc so far. The story is intriguing, can't wait to continue playing it tomorrow. If you like puzzle games and steam punk, this is a game for you. The graphics can be scaled based on the available graphics card, satisfying everyone.
The puzzles are pretty solid, the story is pretty good, the art is excellent. I liked the world design and I liked the way that techniques were taught to you and then tested. The gameplay elements are all present and accounted for and very well polished. I have only a few complaints: The lighter taking more than one click to light is a nice touch, but it can get irritating since it instantly disappears when you let go/partially release the trigger. There should be an arizona sunshine style belt calibration for your tool belt. It was just slightly out of my reach. Chains are a little awkward to maneuver because they have to fully slot over the teeth of both gears, but often only have the length to comfortably reach to the outside geometry of the mating gear. Maybe I was holding them wrong; it's very difficult to tell exactly where you're gripping an object. Documents are just floppy enough to be difficult to read most of the time and the narration pauses when you release them to reposition them unless it's only very briefly(?) [going from hand to hand]. Long series of pipes have a tendancy to go nuclear if they touch a gear in a way that they can't simply bounce, or should they clip into a wall/physics prop. I found one on the spawning platform, which I think means it escaped the map. ---- 8/10.
Disclaimer: the game received for free via Steam Curator Connect. Profundum is unpolished but very enjoyable and atmospheric adventure with logical physics-based puzzles. Pros: + More realistic approach to gear handling than in most other games. Here when you use a cog or a pipe, you can precisely choose it's position and angle. It makes execution of your plan a lot of the time more challenging, than the planing itself. I've created a lot of poorly fitting constructions, that barely worked at all, and it was fun) + Logical puzzles, smooth introduction of new gameplay elements without immersion-breaking tutorials + Great atmosphere: dark, claustrophobic and oppressive + Decent visuals, metal parts of the environments look absolutely amazing Cons: - Physics-based item interaction can be very clunky at times: chains get entangled, pipes float a bit, paper jitters uncontrollably when using elevators - Free locomotion gets VERY wobbly on slanted surfaces and ladders - Using chains is quite tedious, especially when you need to connect two big cogs that are placed at maximum possible distance Nitpicks: - During lava section vehicle can easily clip into walls - Rock parts of environment look a bit weird: kinda like they are slightly glowing from the inside - The lighter is not used at all - Coal mining creates rocks out of thin air)
Hier unser Let's Play: https://youtu.be/KCw_Vd1iSrc
Disappointed to see that in the game my hands are holding controllers. Totally takes away from the immersion to have them in my hands instead of ummmm just hands. Is this how it was designed or is it not working correctly for me? Hard to recommend this game for that reason.
