Great port. Terrible terrible game. Ever wanted to platform with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rocketskates on? Highly recommend.
Maybe I'm tripping balls, because everyone seems to agree that this is a bad game with a good remaster. I think the remaster is on par with Nightdive's other smaller releases, so yea, good job. The game tho, I'm absolutely fascinated because it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that delves in various forms of level design sensibilities. More prominently, there's a sense of scale that I think it's absolutely unprecedented by any game of the era. It's incredible because with a more serious coat of paint, you could sell this as an avantgarde game set within a megastructure like Blame. Most incredible of it all, a lot of these levels can be quite short if you go straight to the exit. In some cases it feels like they forgot to program scripted events that would take the player throughout the map. In the hangar level for example, the exit is shown to you fairly early in one of the passageways, however there's still two big diaphanous hangar areas that rival the size of some big Serious Sam maps, plus two individual spaceships which you can enter and have a mini level within, plus some corridors between all of these. You'd think you'd have to navigate the map to push two buttons within each spaceship to unlock the exit, because it just makes sense in an architectural sense. No, you can just go straight in. Is it bad design? I think it's not taking advantage of itself in a way more focused games would. Lots of sections can also be awkward because of unfortunate enemy-enemy and enemy-indoorsections synergies. However, don't take this game lightly because it has some phenomenal structures and a sense of verticality that puts most FPS to shame. It's kind of wonderous in a way, it's punching so much weight yet it's a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Thank god the remaster lets you tone down the fart noises. If you're an FPS buff that isn't scared of jank or uneven experiences, I think you can definitely find a lot to like here. If you want a good, polished, no-rough-edges experience, stay the hell away!
what an ugly, hard, boring game. What the heck are these enemies? Shame cause the cover art is really nice.
I'm PO'ed I gave this uncontrollable mess a chance. I love Nightdive's remasters and System Shock Remake, but I would humbly advise them to better prioritize their efforts, as this game seemed unsalvageable to me. Character moves like ♥♥♥♥, it's so frustrating to come from all the classic shooters and play this crap. Join me in Hexen 2 + Heretic 2 prayer circle instead of projects like these.
This is, for the most part, unplayable trash.
It's a slightly above average FPS released on the 3DO that seems to be considered a cult classic for a small number of people because most 3DO games were just way worse. While it's nice to see it highly polished with a very clean framerate, the fundamental game design still just has some awful things about it that keep it from being a real hidden gem. The premise is funny, as you play as a chef aboard a ship who has to use his frying pan to attack enemies that include alien butt creatures. You might think that this is a "breezy" simplistic FPS since it has the premise of a parody of a game like Doom, but it's not. This game is tough as nails and the harder difficulties will chew you up and spit you out if you're not prepared for them. The combat it self is not awful. There's some nuance to it, as some weapons are better at killing the flying creatures. Some enemies drop certain ammunition and others give health, so there would seem to be a balance to the game play. The first 1/3 of this game is a nightmare because your weapon loadout isn't good enough to defeat the enemies and the level design in this game is just plain atrocious. Doom came out way before this game and had a very clear key system that let you know how to progress. PO'ED is deliberately designed to anger and confuse you. All you have to do on each stage is find the flashing exit teleporter, but to actually trigger its appearance is so random and outrageous that it will probably make 90% of players quit if they don't just use what little online resources are available to figure it out. On some levels, you have to shoot a random wall, on others you have to kill a certain classification of enemies in full. Whether you actually want to kill all the enemies or run away depends on the area. If you're in a big open area, the best thing to do is just run and dodge. You also get a jetpack, which is probably the coolest thing about the game. On the harder difficulties it has to be refilled with fuel and it adds another depth of complexity as you not aren't just balancing health and ammo but also watching your fuel gauge. Later on you get much better weapons like a laser cannon and even a remote guided missile, but the fact of the matter is that this is completely "run and gun," as in, if you don't run around and avoid everything, the game is over. Flying enemies are particularly obnoxious because they are hard to hit. "Very hard" difficulty is like Duke Nukem's hardest difficulty, in that the enemies respawn after a short time in an attempt to give you a nervous breakdown. Well, it's not the hardest challenge ever but it is tough. The graphics hold up pretty well, and the sound effects are good even though the stages don't have music for some bizarre reason (Possibly hardware limitations at the time). Hidden weapons and upgrades make a noise, and this is a good way to give the player an audio clue to tell them to search the area for something. This game is really just for two groups of people: the tiny number of people who played this game as a kid and want to relive it with a smoother framerate on PC, and masochists who have beaten every FPS game ever and are not uncomfortable telling others they've mastered a niche joke FPS game from three decades ago that's more than a little bit broken. If you're just looking for an authentic retro FPS game to play, there are so many better ones. Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, Blood, etc. And even beyond that you have the lesser known gems like Powerslave, Turok 2, Hexen, to name just a few. This is simply more bottom of the barrel, but if you can get past the horrific level design there are some pretty interesting mechanics and the game intermittently fun when you're just flying around on the jetpack blasting everything.
This game made me sick to play and the controls suck balls still appreciate Nightdive efforts to preserve old video games however.
