The Apogee Throwback Pack

A very basic conversion. Simply the base games with Dosbox. No real customization options. You can't even set a strafe right/left, but only a 'strafe' button, meaning you can only strafe by hitting that button and turning left/right. No meaningful video options No meaningful sound options Poor mouse/keyboard options, making these two games almost unplayable. The games are good, but I cannot recommend in current state.

I remember when Apogee was the company for making great games for MS-DOS. Originally teamed with ID Software, they decided to move on and make their own games. This set includes 4 games to play... 1.) Rise Of The Triad - Dark War 2.) Extreme Rise Of The Triad 3.) Blake Stone - Aliens Of Gold 4.) Blake Stone - Planet Strike Technically, it's just 2 games with 2 different add-ons. Blake Stone is a Wolfenstein 3D clone, only with different weapons, different maps, different voices, and actual missions. The idea here is to shoot the bad guys while trying not to shoot the scientists. Keeping scientists alive is the key to a good score. You can also visit different levels and even revisit older levels for a completely new game experience than Wolfenstein 3D. With map mode, you can also find the secret rooms. This game is in 2 parts due to the story line as well as the evil boss who is not who he says he is. Rise Of The Triad is a more detailed Wolfenstein 3D game with a lot more weapons, bigger levels, and now maps have a much bigger height/ceiling. At the time, this was an extremely bloody game. Once in a while, when you killed a soldier with a bazooka, they would explode with guts flying everywhere and sometimes you would see an eyeball or blood splatter scroll down the screen. Plus, after a while, the blood that was launched in the air would come down as drops of rain. This game offers multiple kinds of play, including multiplayer levels and secrets that are only known to those who knew about Apogee and the games they made. Such secrets include... 1.) Scott's Mystical Head 2.) The Dopefish 3.) Holiday settings based on a particular holiday (Example, set your PC's date to Christmas for a surprise) And many more surprises await you. If you ever wanted to play a classical FPS game, this is the game to get. You get 4 games in one for a great price of $9.99. (Technically 2, but with their 2nd part included). Just a side note, back when these games came out, you had to pay the following... 1.) Rise Of The Triad on floppy was $29.95 2.) Rise Of The Triad on CD was $34.95 3.) Rise Of The Triad site license CD was $89.95 1.) Blake Stone - Aliens Of Gold on floppy was $59.95 + $5 Shipping for full game plus extra info 2.) The price was seriously reduced due to terrible sales and because Doom came out So in the end, you would have ended up paying close to $100. But now you can get all these games for just under $10. If you love classical games and love first person shooters or Wolfenstein 3D clones, you will love these games.

Very interesting to move your character you use the mouser. But I'm not going to complain. You get four classic games and they run pretty well.

A good set of four games, they have old controls and the graphics make your eyes bleed.

This Apogee package is a gift for fans! Because these games are very good, each one is fun, and they work 100% well in DOSBox. And of course, for those who enjoy FPS games like Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, Catacomb 3D... You're in for a treat! The wait was worth it!

Before 3D Realms there was Apogee Software, they developed a lot of underrated FPS games before they launched 3D Realms and eventually Duke Nukem 3D. Throughout their tough years they managed to produce two games known as "Blake Stone" and "Rise of the triad" in my opinion the former is better than the latter. However moving on I'll simply say that these are the games that have been overshadowed by their competition. Blake Stone released around the same time as Doom so it never got the recognition it deserved and Rise of the triad was born from the ashes of the cancelled Wolfenstein game that Apogee was supposed to develop however since they could not use the Wolfenstein IP anymore they had to improvise and came up with a brand new game franchise called Rise of the triad. These days Apogee and 3D Realms are no longer owned by the same entity but they're both doing the same thing i.e publishing video games rather than developing them. They may be notorious for their bad practices but the legacy that now defunct Apogee software left behind will never be forgotten. Rise of the triad isn't my thing and there is now a better port of it released by Nightdive Studios recently however I enjoyed Blake Stone and it's expansion Planet Strike thoroughly. I definitely recommend you purchase this pack and enjoy those games for yourself it is way better than buying the standalone games as they all come bundled in one executable file. 9/10
