The year is 1983. The world teeters on the verge of destruction as the Cold War tightens its icy grip. East or West: trust no one, question everything. The fate of humanity rests in your hands as you pit spy versus spy in tactical Phantom Doctrine.

For those who have experienced crash on boot up: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhantomDoctrine/comments/14gmqys/a_fix_for_the_bug_thats_plagued_many_players/ Note, this is a Reddit post from two years ago. Two years ago. I'm pleased they are making another sequel, but damn, ideally you should make sure there isn't a game breaking bug that kicks in when you try and load it while also being connected to the internet. 10/10 - no other game has ever forced me to learn about inbound and outbound exception rule making in Windows Firewall
I love the premise and the work that has gone in to this. This is my third attempt to get in to the game but I just can't. Even on easy the tactical aspect of the game is simply insufferable. Save scumming 20-30 times this early in to a game just isn't for me. I absolutely get that I could get better with time but getting vectored in across the map constantly by guards is not a fun introduction to the game. My time is better spent with other games that don't leverage weird damage calculations that lead to sheer frustration. It's just not fun. Again i love the setting and the intel curation elements. Very cool, but yeah being mired in to saving every move and being one shot across the map when a guard shouldn't even know so quickly where i'm at and have that level of accuracy is just too much for me

Getting into this game is just too unclear for me, it TAKES a lot of want to, so many facets that are not clear or understandable. For example, I still don't fully understand how training works entirely. I will continue to try and slog through it for a bit more, but I kind of regret the purchase and will likely abandon - disappointed as I really like the the genre and concept of the game .. Edit: Learning Cruve needs to be over come
Crashes on start-up. Only fix I can find is to 'disconnect from the internet.'
Phantom Doctrine can be VERY DEEP in terms of gameplay mechanics; or as chill as XCOM "lite" depending on the way you play it. It is slightly less taxing and demanding in terms of accuracy of execution than XCOM, while giving you a ton of creative leeway to deal with violent and passive situations. If you're into tactical combat strategy, the amount of agent training, crafting, weapon selections can fill your needs. Or if you are like me, someone who cannot let go of any loss of agents due to time invested in them + OCD, you can stealth/takedown/dispose/silencer all the way with your best friend "save and reload". If it's there, I won't consider it an exploit, but the devs must as well just add a feature to undo or backtrack turns and moves since my play style involves a ton of reloading to optimize and perfect each turn deviating from bad blind decisions. Oh, and recon + disguise? Makes the game GAY EASY. Burst explosive moments that the game forces a passive player into are also SUPERB when you pull it off successfully as you stack up agents preparing for busting up a place or breaching in without giving the enemy a chance. There were one or two scripted enemy detections in missions at the beginning of the game where it really threw me off by the odd design choice for its inconsistency with the rest of the game. Though, it's all smooth and addictive there after. The game loop is great, quite challenging in terms of managing priorities and compromised danger; and it's been a while since something could grip me for more than three hours straight per session. It really boils down to not wanting to forget the simultaneous events that I am handling such that I just keep going, hardly ever finding a point I could tell myself to log off. It has its own way of presenting and tie-up its management/combat/investigation plays that it is noteworthy to be unique than just being like XCOM. Some visual cons though, fog-of-war visuals are dogsh*t blended into everything else. You can't really identify it too clearly especially when a room is partially scouted. Also if you're a completionist, you'd be pissed with how obscure all the hidden classified docs or item lockers are. I could have cleared a map and ran through it multiple times but still can't find the glowing pick-ups. But over time I've learnt to let it go and not get affected by not getting it all; the benefits are slim, and it ain't worth the time to run around in search. I just grab whatever I can see, and when I clear each level, I'd just exfil. F*** those obscure glowing items! ._. Great game! Kills time like no one's business.
This game no longer loads on a large number of computers. If you choose to buy it, be prepared to refund if the game simply won't start for reasons that are more trouble to fix than most would consider worth their time.
Combat is much like xcom, as advertised, but without the aggravating RNG frustrations. You also have the option to complete all but 3 or 4 of the missions in full stealth, which is fun at first, but becomes super trivial as you get some of the skills along the way (particularly the skill that lets you sneak around the enemy agents in disguise). Overall the game is fun, but it does get repetitive after a while. Combat is enjoyable, stealth is enjoyable, the body enhancement stuff is a cool system, the weapon diversity is good, the theme is cool, it has all good elements, but at some point you're just doing the same things over and over. That said, it was good enough for me to want to spend the time to play it through to the end, which will take you 40-50 hours. It would take quite a bit less than that if it wasn't for the one pet peeve I have with this game... DON'T make animations in turn based games that can't be sped up extremely or skipped altogether! I'm so sick of watching my agents stab themselves with those stupid movement increase syringes and slowly walking halfway across the map with a KO'd agent on their back - let me skip it!
