This is not a thumbs down but it's also not a thumbs up. i _want_ to like this, and a fundamentally do, but so much of the content is locked behind having to play it with every character and it's way too difficult (for me) to unlock. It's made for people who _want_ to keep trying, but i'm not built like that. The mechanics, graphics, UI/UX, i like (with the exception of having to rapidly click 100 times to get through the dialog at the start of an episode). The locking of content, however, behind unattainable-to-me goals, predictably spoils it. On the plus side, it plays beautifully on Linux Mint. PS: the third character (the robot) is more annoying than interesting. First, having to manually roll the dice gets really tedious really quickly, and then being kicked in the testicles for daring to risk rolling a third die produces the expected result: the player is pained and annoyed.
It's relatively fun for the first few games because you're experiencing the variety of characters for the first time, and they all feel very distinct. But after that, it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. A lot of enemies reuse the same attacks and you often end up sticking to the same strategy because most of the "different" moves are just bad Genuinely an ass game. 2/1
What I liked: - Gorgeous art - Theme and story of the game is great and funny - Wildly different characters (even if I didn't like some of them) - Soundtrack But the main mechanics of the game just lack depth. The first few characters are fun at first, but because of the lack of depth in the runs it quickly becomes quite repetitive. The two ways to improve is to: get a new skill, or upgrade a skill. Nothing else, and you can only upgrade a skill once. After you have all the skills and upgraded them, there's nothing else to do just go through the dungeon with enemies you've already seen before and do the same thing. No events, no relics, no further upgrades. To play harder levels, the game forces you to play every character once, who all have great diversity, but their unique mechanics are not explained anywhere. You have to figure out during the run, and the 4th character's mechanic is just simply infuriating to me. Once you've done that, you can play harder "modes" with each character, but they feel just like little modifiers that are not fun and do not give the feel of progression at all, because there is no way to scale for your character. It will be the same as the first run you've done, just now your skills don't work 50% of the time.
✅ Addicting card battler ✅ Several characters to play with, each with increasingly difficult deck which provides challenge ✅ Massive amount of replayability content ✅ Charming and funny character/enemy design ✅ Catchy soundtrack ✅ DLC was given for free ❌ Each class has a set starter build; you can't really tweak it that much which makes the games feels the same from start of run to the end with a character ❌ The game lacks depth in some areas like having no artifacts/boons
Its very fun the first few games when you experience all the characters for the first time since they are very distinct but shortly it becomes repetitive and boring with lots of the same attacks and you often stick to the same stratagy because lots of the different moves are just bad
Just beat the game with 100% achievements. Now I am a bit sad I beat it. It has a lot of gameplay and for only $6 on sale it was a steal. The characters are silly and original. The gameplay is both relaxing and engaging making it suitable for most moods I am in, the soundtrack and characters are lovable and the game was bug free for me. Like many games of this genre, it can get very hard, I played the game on relaxed mode and even then. I may have had to edit a text file in order to beat several levels and speedrun some of the achievements. Even then I have 83 hours on record. Hope a sequel comes out. If you are into deckbuilder or mini RPG like games, this is a must have.
There is nothing I hate more than when a game fakes its game play and that is exactly what this game does. The idea that you roll dice and have to rely on RNG and a proper build for yourself is to be expected, but what is piss poor gameplay is having the AI get constant perfect roles that can lock you down turn after turn with the inability to perform counter play. That is ♥♥♥♥ game design and no enjoyable. That makes a fun game become frustrating and not something I support. It's artificial difficulty relying purely on RNG that you don't get a specific enemy and that's very bad design.
To start, I super appreciate how far this game stretches its mechanics in interesting ways. The characters all tip how the game is played with drastic and unique methods. It's certainly not dull from a design point of view. However I have far too many pain points with this game to enjoy it. While I enjoy some of the macro decisions I find myself having very little fun in actual battles. Sometimes I have to make compelling decisions but much of the time it ends up feeling like a series of push-your-luck gambles, and I really don't gel with those. The extra episodes largely being "Play the character again, but now it's even more unwieldy." I super can't get behind. A slot being a random spell each turn for the witch; or the warrior's skills only working 50% of the time doesn't sound compelling. They sound, and are, annoying and random. I find myself feeling apathetic half way into a run. Battles feel like they play themselves, just rolling with whatever dice I'm given until an encounter where the enemy rolls lucky and I roll unlucky enough to end the run. (That or any encounter with Loud Bird) I could see the appeal as a less mathy, more breezy roll with the punches type roguelite but it feels too mean in how abruptly your run can end to be recommended as such.
Unfortunately, too much of this game suffers from rng and not enough control over your deck. I like rng and dice games but, when you are stuck with really bad cards that seem to be added just to make it harder and I mean the cards you are forced to take are just really bad, then it is bad game design. In the harder varients the decks are designed in a way you can brick 3 times in a row AT THE START OF THE RUN. Roll all 5’s and 6’s!... but your cards can’t use above 4’s. To win most of this game you don’t need to use skill you just need to hope you roll right. It gets the point where it is not fun.
