a nice port marred by very sloppy looking AI upscaled textures and awful sound quality. A great game but it's genuinely surprising this was considered presentable by Atlus. Thankfully this can be fixed with mods, shoutout https://gamebanana.com/mods/440962
the game ai upscaled everything terribly and the sound effects are somehow worse this time around. the psp version of the game has better sound effects. buy this game when it's on sale cause not even $20 is worth it for such a half assed port
Obligatory Context: Persona 3 stands out in the series as a very odd entry with 4 different versions to play but somehow no single one of them being "definitive" or "The Complete" P3 experience. So where does Portable stand in this case ? a brief comment on gameplay: you can enjoy a variety of QoL introduced in P4 and while the non-Tartarus sections have been replaced by a "visual novel" style it honestly doesn't detract all that much (if anything navigating locations and dialogues is incredibly fast). The tactical sections remain as you might have known them in the PS2 games with a lot of elements like fatigue still being present as well as the aforementioned P4 style QoL improvements. Persona 3 Portable's main offer on the table is the FeMC (Female Main Character), which goes beyond just visual aesthetics. FeMC offers a P3 experience with exclusive Social Links (many of which are marked improvements over their original counterparts) , a new Velvet Room attendant, new romance options and different dialogues for the Social Links that have remained the same. This also means you can also enjoy a mechanically updated MaleMC P3 experience but if you are considering this game you really oughta go into the meat and potatoes of it namely: FeMC. FeMC offers an interesting reinterpretation of the protagonist's narrative place. if Makoto Yuki (MaMC) represents the calm coolness of moonlight, Kotone Shiomi (FeMC) is the loud warmness of sunlight. both MCs are coping with the sadness of death, in different ways. To this day P3P remains the more unique P3 experience on offer (even if there's stuff missing like "The Answer") and one worth experiencing for fans of the series. TL;DR P3P is one of the most unique takes on Persona 3's original story, if you are a fan of the series and don't mind the dated appearance of the game, this one is definitely worth experiencing I also recommend using QoL mods that enable manual skill inheritance, re-done versions of the cutscenes and properly restored audio (as the PC port has left a lot to be desired)
if you get mods for specific problems the port has the game isnt even that bad, yea its essentially a visual novel for half of it but i think the femc route makes up for it, the writing for the social links are way better imo and i think its one of the reason why someone should play portable, if you want to play as makoto and dont care if you want to be able to control your teammates or you arent rich enough to buy reload then id just recommend emulating FES, get reload if you’re rich enough though
kotone shiomi
In a perfect world FES would've been ported to modern hardware and Kotone would've been in Reload
Ignore my low playtime, I've completed Persona 3's main story + The Answer before. I'm just giving my own two cents on this specific version of the game after having played for a little while. You're probably better off playing P3FES on an emulator, especially if it's your first time playing Persona 3; but if you really want to own P3 on steam, then this is definitely preferable to P3R imo (it's certainly less content-packed, but the music & art are significantly better, the gameplay and difficulty is closer to that of the original and the spirit of the original is fully intact here). KEEP IN MIND HOWEVER that the AI upscaling and audio compression in this port is quite bad and that P3P lacks the 2d cutscenes that the original has, although thankfully these are really easy to fix with mods using Reloaded II. Otherwise, it's just Persona 3 but you have to point and click to interact with stuff rather than actually walk around (since the PSP was really limited); you can't really go wrong, especially if you get it on sale for about 10 bucks like I did.
Just get Persona 3 Reload This version is not worth it anymore
