OFF

The gameplay is kinda fun if you like RPGs. The problem is, it's a story-based RPG with no good story. The entire thing contradicts itself a dozen times over, and after a certain point it becomes completely impossible to imagine the main character's quest is even remotely heroic even though the game wants to act like it's somehow morally grey. Actually playing OFF has recontextualized every OFF-inspired game from "something inspired by OFF" to "An aspect of OFF but actually good" Undertale is OFF if it had good worldbuilding and The Judge made any sense Omori is OFF if they did anything with Hugo Slay the Princess is OFF if The Batter and Queen had an actual dynamic OneShot is OFF if it had literally any reason to be metafictional Deltarune is OFF if it did anything with The Player being a canonical figure And so on And what makes it hurt more is that the building blocks of something amazing is genuinely here, I can see why so many people saw this and got inspired. But dear god, they just left those blocks on the ground. They didn't even TRY to build with them The gameplay is fun enough that I think this game is worth it on sale just for the sake of history, but do not expect ANYTHING from the story or you'll be left with a sour taste in your mouth. This isn't gonna be like classic DOOM or Mario 64 where it can still stand on its own alongside everything it inspired. Edit: I slept on it. While I still think the story is disappointing, I don't think it's necessarily bad, and I think what is there is beautiful. Despite my issues, I can't recommend this game enough.

Not a perfect game, but it has a lot of charm! Definitely worth playing to see the inspiration behind games like Undertale and Omori
