Oaken looked promising at first glance, the kind of charming, strategy based adventure that seems perfect for relaxing sessions. But once the novelty fades, the game reveals itself as a very repetitive TFT style experience with far too little variety to keep things interesting. The entire game practically revolves around a single character. Instead of offering different playstyles, tactical approaches, or fresh mechanics, Oaken locks you into the same loop over and over again. No matter how beautifully the game is presented, the gameplay quickly becomes predictable and boring. Overall, I didn’t enjoy Oaken, and I genuinely can’t recommend it, especially if you’re looking for strategic variety or meaningful progression. There are many better options in the genre that offer richer gameplay, more characters, and far more gameplay.
Красивая стратегия которая может удивить сложностью. Отсутствие русского языка огорчает, но разобраться все таки можно. Только выполнив 40 ачивок смог получить хорошую концовку игры. Конечно оно могло того не стоить, но все же...
All in all pretty average. The art style is cool. Mechanics are average, not bad though. Get it on sale if you like card battlers. Negative because there are better alternatives for this exact price category.
I was pretty down on this game initially, just somehow felt boring, but genuinely this is a pretty simple cozy game that I can have a solid time with. I do think though that it's either something about the color palette or the way everything is presented that somehow puts it down. Looking down upon green and purple hexes while everything you're not directly looking at makes you think "ah foresty" is probably the biggest problem the game has, you don't really get enough focus or clarity looking at anything for you to really care about what your looking at so you end up with "purple corruption" and "nature" as the two visual things on the screen just because that's all that's informationally important. You're focusing on the numbers, and indicators everywhere that when you pause and take a longer glance it's just not a good enough view to really spark something when looking to actually appreciate the effort put into the art for this game, something about how hovering will highlight models and tiles and it just all makes it feel barebones even if I really do think this is a visually outstanding game. Looking closer at the models and backgorunds and really taking a nice stop to view everything really makes me fall in love with what this game's got that it's a shame that the game IS merely mediocre. I think that if everything was the same but instead every character selection moved the camera to a nearly shoulder view from that models facing angle would easily help or maybe just a free camera for you to point and look at everything just because right now it's all obscured and blends in too well. As for the gameplay it's a simple translation of a card battler like slay the spire to a hex-grid format. It's solid and enjoyable enough although I can't lie and say that it's anything outstanding, if anything it feels closer to hearthstone or legends of runeterra with it's strategies but slightly dumbed down. It's a little hard to describe but I feel that's a roughly equatable summation of the experience I've been getting from this. As a side though, I really really can't emphasize how much it genuinely saddens me that it's only this. So much love is put into the design of everything that when such minor problems are able to detract from a game this much it's really disheartening, honestly it's even disheartening to see these full models, artworks for events and have written sections for events and see that there's something I'd really love to see expanded on because it doesn't feel like generic nature vs purple corruption, it manages to have something that seems alive and that there's more beneath the surface which, again, isn't immediately something I was able to see until I tried looking closer. I really hope these devs are able to do something more with this and try something more personal. I really would love more built upon what's here but maybe more story focused going as far as they want to go with it and it would be even better to see something more experimental with the gameplay. Right now though this is just a decent game to hold your attention with some easy to miss love put into the design. It's also important to mention that while I didn't really talk about it, the game doesn't have any issues, the music is good, it runs perfectly on what I've got and everything is easy to distinguish and works. Just that easy to read and distinguish bit is probably what hurt what was supposed to grab you. I really hope the devs keep doing more, I feel there's a lot they could be capable of.
Oaken shows many similarities to roguelike deckbuilders like slay the spire. For battles it uses a hex grid, with spells and creatures to summon from your deck. In between battles you can slightly buff your cards by resources found. The style of wood and plants is a nice touch. What it comes down to is, this is quite an ok game. It doesn't really draw me in to play it more and more. I don't think this game does something fundamentally wrong. I enjoyed my time and that is enough for me. I don't think every game has to be the best game ever just to be played and enjoyed.
I really want to recommend this, but unfortunately I just cannot, as the text is way too small and blurry, even with "High readability font" enabled. The issue persists both on 4K tv screen and on Steam Deck, which is extra unfortunate because the game is marked as Deck Verified, and the verification details explicitly specify that the text is supposed to be well-readable on deck. If I would have bought it directly I would have requested a refund, but I've got it through Humble Choice, so I just keep it in hopes that maybe one day developers would add options for different fonts or at least font size selector.
Verdict
👍 Recommended (but not for me) I played Oaken for about 0.1 hours and then turned it off. It’s not really my type of game, but I can still recommend it because it looks like the kind of strategy experience that will click hard for the right audience — especially if you enjoy slower, tactical decisions and building your way through runs. I just wasn’t in the mood to learn and settle into it.
Quick signals
💸 Value: ✅ "That'll do, pig. That'll do." 🖥️ Requirements: ✅ Minimum 🎨 Graphics: ✅ Acceptable ⏱️ Length: ✅ 5–15 hours 📖 Story: ✅ Good 🎮 Difficulty: ✅ Easy to learn, hard to master 🐛 Bugs: ✅ Perfect
Why I bounced off
[*] - It immediately felt like a game where the fun comes after you invest time into understanding the systems. [*] - I wasn’t in the mood for a tactical/strategy loop, so it didn’t hook me. [*] - Nothing “wrong,” just not my vibe.
Why others might love it
[*] + The presentation is pleasant and the style is easy to look at for long sessions. [*] + If you like thoughtful strategy and planning ahead, this kind of game can be super satisfying. [*] + It seems built for players who enjoy improving run by run and experimenting.
Who should play it
[*] + Fans of tactical/strategy games who like making smart decisions instead of reacting fast. [*] + Players who enjoy experimenting with builds/units and finding strong combos. [*] + Anyone looking for a smaller game they can finish over a few evenings.
Who might not vibe with it
[*] - If you want action and constant adrenaline, it will feel slow. [*] - If you dislike learning mechanics and playing “one more run,” it won’t click.
Personal note
Not for me, but I can totally see this being a cozy strategy gem for the right player.
very average cardbattler with a bad ui
