Razor's Edge is, by many accounts, a very frustrating experience. Sadly, 'difficulty' can often be interlaced with 'bad game design' and this is a perfect example of that. Despite being arguably the best feeling Ninja Gaiden of all time - it's also one of the worst in terms of overall difficulty. This can be attributed to a variety of factors, but there's almost too many to list. The earliest example, however, is the Alchemist - an enemy variant that is literally 'the worst implemented enemy type in any game ever'! Not being a funny joke here - these guys are terrible! They wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have triple the health pool of everyone else, and maybe if your introduction to them wasn't a gang initiation (with you facing 3 of them at once) and all of this occuring super super early into the game - y-yeah. Yeah. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad. Yeah. For some reason the game waits until the 2nd level to teach you about one of the most critical aspects of it's core design, I.E. 'Steel to Bone' attacks. Essentially, dodge a grab/heavy and punish with a heavy - get a big instakill punish that hits the next nearby opponent. It's insanely useful - but nobody knows how it works until the 2nd ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ level. Why? Why keep critical information from the player? The Alchemists - for any would-be players who might be stuck with the game for some reason - are misunderstood. Alchemists have 2 modes - Defend/Range and Melee When the hands are glowing, that means they're in Defend/Range. They'll use ranged attacks that take a while to wind up, and one Flying Swallow or Heavy Attack destroys their shield, putting them in Melee Mode. During Melee Mode they jump you, dodge your attacks, but they don't block! Meaning you can land some quick launches into air if you're lucky. Try to learn the 'Chain Ultimate Technique'. When you have two Alchemists in 'Defend/Range' Mode, you can try to get some distance on one in the Melee Mode - and land an Ulti. Right afterwards, the AI likes to charge up it's next shield mode, giving you plenty of time to charge up the next Ulti. Keep going until they're dead. - As far as the Sword Alchemists go I haven't faced them enough to know, go look it up. They aren't as bad. But if you chose to skip, don't even stress. It's a perfect case study in god awful game design and horrid difficulty. It's the perfect example of a franchise whose entire identity became intertwined with 'Difficulty' - and this is the end result. Stripping the player of crucial information for chuckles, half of the bosses being 3v1's, cheap shots, linear asfk design, and tons of enemy variants you are expected to deal with - despite them all being together, and covering every angle. There's no being good at this game, because the game itself if bad. More to the point, there's no reason to get good at this god awful experience. Spare yourself, or endure hell.

While objectively the best version of Ninja Gaiden 3, I hate this game. I'm used to punishing gameplay, getting stuck on bosses, and dealing with mechanics that feel genuinely unfair, but here it's just intolerable and this wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you had the luxury of healing items or didn't also lose max hp in addition to your current hp or the bosses were actually... fun. Overall, a bad game to an otherwise good collection.
i don't care
