Fun game but the black spider clan is controlling the camera for a majority of the fights
I haven't played the original version of this game (or any of the 3D Ninja Gaiden games besides this) but I have played other hack and slash games like the Bayonetta trilogy/Devil May Cry 5/Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. This is a pretty fun game although the camera can be a huge pain at times. I played on normal and I still found the game pretty challenging. Sometimes I could smoothly cut through a room of enemies barely taking any damage and sometimes the enemies bullied me and held my nutsack to a belt sander.
To be honest everything about this game is extremely mediocre. Not only the combat and movement overall but even the story, characters, level design and music. The combat especially is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clunky and janky it's unreal. I don't know how people dare rank this game among other masterpieces like DMC, Bayonetta and GoW. Also the fact that they had the audacity to put parkour sections with the way this game controls... I played it until the end because I am a fan of hack 'n slash games and it's very hard to make obliterating a thousands enemies not fun but this is easily the worst game in the genre that I've ever played. I can't see how anyone without nostalgia glasses could call this a good game. Also for a remaster it's very lazy and disappointing. Ugly basic UE5 textures and unoptimized on top it. For some reason anything below 120FPS feels like ♥♥♥♥ and has a huge delay input so you have to adjust your settings accordingly. Drop to like 110fps and it will genuinely feel like below 60 for some reason.
PEAK ASS GAME
I really wanted to like this game but chapter six really was the nail in the coffin. I played on normal mode, died about 10 or so times, most of which were to Genshin, and While the game was somewhat challenging that's not where my problems lie. Simply put, the game controls like ♥♥♥♥. I could be less vulgar with my word choice, but I don't think "Controls poorly" is a sufficient enough description. There are other games from around this time, with similar combat styles, that don't feel like an active crime to play. The most notable being: Metal gear rising. I spent more time fighting the controls, camera, and Ryu's strange habit of gluing himself to any wall he can find, than i did any boss. Strangely enough though, he tends to be opposed to clinging on ladders, which is a minor issue but one that annoyed me enough to mention. The end of Chapter 6 and the start of chapter 7 were what broke me, and they might just be one of the most poorly designed things I have ever seen in a video game. Namely, having to stand on a very specific platform and killing a certain mob to make the boss spawn. This particualr mod is, in of itself, very poorly designed. Spawning in swarms and command grabbing the player. They aren't much a threat due to their high healing drop rate, but it's still a chore to fight against. As for the boss, at least in my experience, it can't be reached with the sword 95% of the time. Meaning you're much better off gunning it down between it's frantic bouts of obnoxious projectile spam. An issue that a few other bosses suffered from. and finally, I just don't find combat in this game to be very rewarding. There seems to be a lot more depth to things than what I was able to discover, but my combat time was largely spent guarding, parrying, and lunging towards enemies while scanning for near by threats. this. . . Was a problem given the games camera controls, which made assessing my surroundings and reacting to things far more difficult than it had to be. Once I closed the gap, it would end with a sword combo or dismemberment, the latter of which was fairly unreliable, as the mechanic seems to be based on RNG or swing angle, and not a figurative bar that decides what limb falls of. Essentially, I couldn't plan around a dismemberment once the big demons started showing up, but my brain had already started trying to do them with muscle memory thanks to the earlier chapters. I'm sure there is something I don't know. Some technique to make combat easier or more rewarding, but even if that theoretical things exists, It's not going to fix the many issues I have with this game. Finally, I have a strong feeling this game suffers from high amounts of input lag. I haven't run any tests or looked anything up, but I did notice that reacting to attacks, even your own for the sake of a combo string, was usually ineffective. In terms of defensive combat this means you'll take a hit where you otherwise wouldn't have from time to time, However offensively, it means that while learning combos, you won't be able to rely on physical feedback from the swing animations. If you have them committed to memory, this won't be a big deal. but while learning, it makes the process significantly more tedious. All in all, i think this game is "fine." I can't personally recommend it, but I can see why people would like it. I do firmly believe that, had the control, camera, and combos been more modernized without taking away from the methodical action combat feel: This game would have been a personally favorite. I'll be shelfing this game. Might go back and finish it, might not, but I do look forward to a newer entry just to see how it will play
