When the workshop has a mod to fix the bugs (220+) in the game, that alone should tell you something.
Listen, this game, it's fun. I enjoy it, I genuinely do love this game. BUT, BIG BUT, this game got messed up a few years ago, it doesn't work without a modded patch. Will the game ever get fixed? 10 years after release, and 6 years since the last update? Not a chance. It's not that you can't play this game, but you can't just start playing, and there's no hope of an official patch ever coming. Just be aware of that before you buy this game as of 2026. Not recommended just so that people actually see this.
This is not just a remaster of the original game. Rather they have completely messed it up due to adding in hyperspace "travel" lanes so you can no longer just head to any star system but are restricted to travel via the lanes. This creates artificial blocks to travel and play which don't exist in space and didn't exist in the original game. Further, there are a few races that were in the original that now have to be bought via a DLC. Even more, it would seem the ships are not as customizable as they were before due to restricting the number of types of weapons or defenses you can have, along with the space restrictions. I'm also not sure the tech tree is exactly the same. Another ouch is that they are restricting the number of ships you can have based on a "support" system using "Command Points". Bigger ships take more points and your colonies can only produce so many points. When you go over that, they hit you with a credit cost penalty that can become crippling. So no 100 ship fleets of miniaturized missile boats for you! Lastly, you can't make really small ships like before. Smallest ship is a frigate. So yeah, looks nice and all but it's a completely different game play.
It's clean, it's stable. It's not as complicated as some of the 4x space civs. Finaly a 4x that'll just let you relax and enjoy terraforming, turning the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ corner of your galaxy into a beautiful garden. And then blow up your enemies homeworld for the slightest altercation. The turn the rubble of their homeworld into a barren world, colonise it, and terraform it into a beautiful garden. It's a peaceful life.
The best game in this series was MO 2. This version brings back that gameplay philosophy but adapts it with new graphics and real-time combat. It might be one of the best space 4X games out there, but I miss being able to switch back to the old turn-based combat system. They should give players the option to choose. Otherwise, the game’s improvements aren’t bad. Although, given my nostalgia for the original, I feel they still have a ways to go to match it.
Couldn't get past turn 36 as the game would keep freeezing on AI turn. I expected a bit more support out of Wargaming free 2 play money coffers. MAybe with the "unofficial patch", it would work. Who knows? I may as well install the latest unofficial patch for Moo2.
It's a worthy successor of the original series, Highly recommended.
f
Highly recommend. Hours played says it all..
there's not much here beyond any other 4x game other than the voice acting.
