«A place beyond your dreams.» [strike]DUNE[/strike] MYST
Not having any nostalgia for this, having just played it for the first time, yeah, it's pretty good. It's about equally as much about the sandbox element of just wandering around these unique environments and fiddling with the stuff there as it is really about the puzzles. The puzzles did all have a unique feeling to them with none really feeling like a retread, and surprisingly none of them were that esoteric or "how was I supposed to know this" feeling. There was one area I got annoyed by the point and click controls limiting my ability to survey the environment, but beyond that I'm glad I played this version over a free-roam version. There's an intentionality to the viewpoints here that I think would be a big element to lose playing the game with typical FPS movement. Myst is a game with great atmosphere and the combination of the viewpoints, the music and the ambient sound effects all really contribute to build that up. Some of the animations for certain mechanisms got annoying before I figured out that you can skip basically all of them, which was a big help for certain parts.
This is hard to recommend. I don’t have any nostalgia for the series and this is my first time playing it. Boy it is so good! The problem is it is so old and jank. I was stuck on a level for about an hour because I did not realize you need to close the elevator door before it responds to the floor buttons. You ride 5 other elevators in this game and for some reason this elevator is just different. Game is good but use a guide when you get stuck.
Myst is an absolute classic its over 30 years old and still a standout game. From the very beginning, the story pulls you in, making you want to uncover every detail and piece everything together. The prerendered visuals remain beautiful even today, though they can sometimes make it easy to overlook branching paths. The puzzles are seriously challenging at times. I found myself taking notes with pen and paper, even resorting to a music tuner for one puzzle, and eventually turning to a guide just to escape a maze I might otherwise still be stuck in. The use of FMV adds a dramatic, timeless quality, with performances that are both memorable and atmospheric. The game maintains a mysterious tone throughout, enhanced by its clever use of sound, which was remarkable for its time. Each environment feels alive, from subtle ambient effects to the satisfying way water flows through pipes and changes as you redirect it. Every island is a self contained world, inviting you to explore and solve its secrets at your own pace. With no time pressure or stress, Myst remains a deeply immersive masterpiece, one that every adventure game fan should experience.
Puzzles are way too obtuse IMO but the vibes, ambiance, and atmosphere are so otherworldly; I was surprised something not too dissilimiar from a picture slideshow could actually have me sooo immersed in its world. Everyone should play Myst🩵
I gave the game a chance but its just too strange and not really visible what and how i have to achieve. The story is pretty much not existent and the fragments of this book "videos" are more anoying then cool. Its just not fun to play for me. I sadly cant recommend it
Myst is a classic puzzle game with a story. It makes you think, is fun to collaborate and play with others or just on your own, and is a game you can play again and again (although you'll want time between iterations). Definitely worth playing!
This is probably the most frustrating game I've ever played. One puzzle requires you to be a musician who can identify notes perfectly, or move five controls precisely with a mouse. If you get it wrong, you just fail, there's no 'three out of five are right' or any hints. No subtitles either so completely inaccessible. Hard dis-recommend.
WHAT
THE ♥♥♥♥ DOES THIS LEVER DO I'VE BEEN STUCK HERE FOR 339 HOURS
Haven't you ever wondered what it's like inside of a book? This game is a classic; if you like puzzle games, you have to play Myst at least once. Don't look anything up, grab a notebook and pencil and spend ~4 hours on the isle of Myst.
