Classic. I played the original version of this game on a Packard Bell computer with Windows 3.1. The ability to free roam and toggle between walk and run makes this version so much easier to replay. Point and click is still an option for the old-school feel. There are also updated graphics/textures if you change the settings in-game although the visuals were pretty well done even back in the 90s Worth playing if you enjoy solving puzzles that can be pretty challenging. This is basically the original "escape room" game, except you are trying to escape different "ages" and piece together a story. The story definitely draws you in, even if it is a little corny sometimes. If you are a first time player, don't look up how to solve anything unless you are truly ready to give up. This game is most rewarding if you take your own notes, and make your own discoveries. It has a few alternate endings, and even a little extra to do after you get the good ending. Enjoy!
realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a 2014 remaster of realMyst (2000) which is a remake of Myst (1993) that also got remastered in 1999. Are you still with me? Great. But wait! There's even another remake: Myst (2021) which also includes a bundled VR version. So 6 versions of the same game? Is that necessary? Yes! Each remaster/remake has added substantial improvements and I actually went back to try the original Myst from 1993 and also the original realMyst from 2000; games that aren’t even being officially sold anymore. But one thing is for certain: the features added (and removed) haven't always been for the better. Firstly, let me praise the game. realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is a near-perfect example of how a remaster/remake should be done. The graphical improvements and the movement alone are that much better than the original realMyst that I’ll always recommend this version over the older releases…well I haven’t played the 2021 release yet so maybe I’ll change my mind by then. But even though this version is superior I do still have some fair criticism. One annoying feature that was first added in realMyst (2000) and is also present in the remaster is the day/night cycle. In the original Myst (1993) and its remaster you didn't have to worry about walking around in pitch darkness solving puzzles. It makes you want to AFK until the sun rises again which is bad game design and the flashlight you are given doesn’t do too much. Cyan did remove this feature in the 2021 release but I can only guess as to why they even added it in the first place; either for realistic world building and immersion or simply just because it was possible for them to do it (Cyan has after all always been ahead or their game in my opinion). Another feature that was actually removed is the page indicator on the bottom left corner. When playing through realMyst:ME it really frustrated me that the cursor indicating if I held a page or not was so tiny. I then got used to it and thought that it must have been a stylistic choice trying to mimic the old cursor... but then I tried the original realMyst… I picked up my first page and there it was, displayed in the bottom left corner... Why did Cyan remove this in the remaster? I don’t get it. I also thought that certain levels looked worse than the 1999 remaster, especially Channelwood and the Mazerunner. It's not even Cyan's fault, it's simply just due to the limitations of 3D-rendering back then and the vision to gracefully keep the visual style in the remaster. One thing I also love about this edition is the baked-in hint book. Way more games need to do this for the sake of preservation; those old guide websites won't last forever so I was very happy to see that feature. realMyst: Masterpiece Edition is indeed a masterpiece. It’s not perfect but it captures the Myst experience very well while remaining true to its origin. I can’t wait to try the 2021 remake!
A good puzzle game that’s somewhat brought down by the terrible controls. I played it in free mode, so it’s possible that in the classic version they’re not as bad. Even then, I still enjoyed my time with it. However, I’d recommend checking out the other two versions of the game to see if they better fit what you’re looking for (whether in terms of price or graphics) before picking this one up. The only issue I had playing it on Linux with Proton (9.0-4) was that the mouse often wouldn’t lock to the game, which is annoying when using multiple monitors.
This game is not fun, its old to difficult and there are better games out there.
After playing the original game, i was afraid that i wont like this newer version as well. But it seems that i just didnt like the mechanic of the game. This game was really nice and more intuitive then the original. I liked it very much and the puzzles where really nice and a bit tricky too. If you didnt like the original, give this version a go. I can highly recommend it.
When the guy gives you a clue in the first video message, the music is too loud and you literally can't hear him. This completely prevented me from progressing in the game. You cannot turn the music down separately from the rest of the audio like you can in the scummvm version.
to confusing
The FOV is super narrow and cannot be increased even with mods or .ini file edits. I can't play the game with the free movement mode without getting motion sickness. If you want a version of Myst with free movement and an adjustable FOV, get the 2021 remake instead.
This is exactly what Myst should have been when it was released. It was too ahead of its time the hardware couldn't handle it. It is wonderful to go back and see everything in a new way.
