A Beautiful Game That Forgot to Be Fun
Mortal Shell tries so hard to be the next great Soulslike that it forgets what makes those games enjoyable in the first place. Instead of rewarding challenge, it often delivers frustration, awkward mechanics, and tedious design that feels more punishing than engaging. The combat revolves around the Hardening mechanic, which sounds clever on paper but quickly becomes repetitive. Rather than encouraging varied playstyles, every encounter feels like waiting for cooldowns, hardening at the right moment, and repeating the same routine. It lacks the fluidity and responsiveness that make the best action RPGs satisfying. Exploration is another weak point. The world is visually impressive, but that's where the praise mostly ends. Areas blur together into a muddy maze of gray forests, swamps, and ruins with very few memorable landmarks. Instead of rewarding curiosity, the game often leaves you wandering in circles, unsure whether you're progressing or simply retracing your steps. The Shell system is an interesting idea that ultimately feels underdeveloped. While each Shell changes your stats, they rarely provide enough unique abilities to dramatically alter gameplay. They come across as different health and stamina bars rather than truly distinct character classes. Enemy variety is disappointingly limited. You'll spend hours fighting the same handful of opponents, making combat stale long before the game ends. Bosses fare only slightly better—some have impressive visual designs, but many rely on oversized health pools and repetitive attack patterns instead of memorable mechanics. The game's storytelling is so cryptic that it borders on nonexistent. There's a difference between mysterious world-building and simply failing to communicate a compelling narrative. Unless you're willing to dig through obscure item descriptions and fan theories, it's difficult to become invested in the world or its characters. Technical issues don't help either. The camera can become an enemy during tight encounters, lock-on behaves inconsistently, and input responsiveness occasionally feels sluggish. In a game where timing is everything, these flaws are hard to overlook. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that Mortal Shell never truly develops its own identity. Nearly every mechanic reminds you of better Soulslike games without matching their depth, polish, or sense of accomplishment. It borrows heavily from its inspirations while rarely improving on them. In the end, Mortal Shell is a gorgeous-looking game wrapped around repetitive combat, confusing level design, shallow progression, and an experience that often mistakes inconvenience for difficulty. For players seeking a challenging action RPG, there are simply far better options available.
Rating: 4/10
Beautiful visuals can't carry a game whose core gameplay never rises above mediocrity.
i suck at this game but the combat and aesthetics are good enough for me to want to play it, despite me being horrible at it
Bit of a learning curve for me, but the overall difficulty was quite manageable. World/level traversal was reasonably challenging with the boss fights being pretty simple by comparison, so very much like Dark Souls in that regard. There are only three dungeons, so it's a short game, but it was nice to play a soulslike that didn't require a month or two of effort to beat. HDR was way too dark even at maximum brightness, so I had to turn that off; other than that, I had no technical issues.
This game isn't great... But damn it i can seeeee what they were going for and there's a vibe sitting there jamming on the lute in the woods for sure. Man i wanted to like this game! Sadly, it controls like ass - it is painfully slow to do anything. Run, swing your weapon, heal, dodge (assuming the button actually does something when you press it) - it's all slow. You can't reliably guess the parry timings because it's so damn delayed the enemy hasn't begun their swing yet. I don't find dumb luck all that rewarding. You can't block to mitigate damage, your harden ability has a cooldown that is just long enough to get you killed, you attack slow, enemies spring up and immediately attack, sometimes spawning out of nowhere. Enemy placement feels random and genuinely unfun and that's just the starting area. I know for a fact it gets worse as the game progresses (thanks to lobosjr). I've been thoroughly spoiled by playing the sequel's beta and it's hands down an all round improvement. I cannot recommend this first game, but check out Mortal Shell II! That one i do recommend for sure, in spite of it not being perfect either.
Порекомендовать игру могу только Шреку, Бабадзаки и питерцам. Здесь нет ничего кроме болота и душного храма с космическими кубами и арбалетчицами. Я Шрек.
The game has several issues: 1) It's too short. Can be reasonably beaten in under 10 hours. It's not very big either, just one central area, with three dungeons attached to it, one of which is full of giant fields of nothing. Once you defeat the boss at the end of the dungeon, you'll need to backtrack, as there is no teleportation between checkpoints, padding out the play time even more. 2) A lot of players were put off by initial lack of mobility. Explanation - you essentially have different playable characters, and they have different mobility, and the one you start with has the worst mobility. Idiotic decision, but you'll just have to get used to double tapping the Dodge button in order to roll properly. 3) Speaking of different playable characters, once you unlock them all, you'll probably come to a conclusion that they aren't equally useful. In fact, there is little reason to use anybody other than Tiel, as he has the highest stamina and mobility. 4) Weapons aren't equally useful either, the starter sword is more than sufficient for every challenge. 5) The Parry and Riposte is supposed to be your main way of restoring health... Until you realise that you can just heal with consumables, some of which literally grow on the ground infinitely, and tank your way through every encounter and bossfight. 6) Enemy variety is a little lackluster. 7) The game is full of super cryptic lore nonsense, it's trying too hard to be Dank Souls, for what is essentially a tech demo. Overall, like I said, it is a tech demo, likely made with the hope of getting enough money to make a proper game with the sequel. Still, it is solid at the core, and worth grabbing with a big discount.
It's alright, lacks a lot of the quality of life from games that are similar but it has some unique mechanics.
bir türlü ne yapacağımı çözemedim 3 kez gaza gelip indirdim sonuç yok
Buggy, Slow, lots of little issues, I thought this would be a better version than on console, and to some degree it is, but not enough to overcome its shorfalls. Visually impressive, with what seems like an interesting world, idea and concept, marred by poor execution.
