WARNING: This is not like the second game!!! I played the open BETA Demo of Mortal Sheel 2 and loved it a lot. So I thought it would be a great idea to try the first one. It's baaaaaad, very clanky and rough. The weapons feel weak and the enemies are tanky. If you like a very stiff and mean souls-like then this is your game but if you liked the Mortal shell 2 demo do NOT play this one. Save yourself the pain and suffering and wait for Mortal Shell 2
I can't BELIEVE this game isn't better than the second one!!! I tried the demo for Mortal Shell 2 and it was good, why is this game bad???? Why isn't the first game from the studio better than Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 combined?? I GOT SCAMMED!!!!! But seriously the game is pretty fun. Definitely flawed and a little short but I had a good time. The only unforgivable feature is the viewbotting Fextralife link at the main menu, yikes!
I feel the need to write this review in light of all the noobs that played the mortal shell 2 beta for free, and then played their older title and started review bombing the mechanics for not being a carbon copy OF THE SEQUEL. - Combat: -this game is GREAT. newbies dont know that you can actually bind weapon swapping to your consumables slot. why does this matter? it means that you can swap weapons for free mid-combo. this opens up build and moveset options significantly because ANYTHING GOES once you learn this. teil and harros make the best use of this bc high stamina means longer combos. -resolve system: guys. you are INVINCIBLE while casting weapon spells and spells are attack cancelable in this game. any amount of clunk that you are referring to is null and void due to this fact alone. -running attack is INSTANT and it chains into another running attack. thats not present in the MS2 beta and its huge for the combo system. Heals: -there was a comment on here complaining about no estus? bro. you can buy infinite rats and just bring infiniite heals with you everywhere you go. ederim + infinite rats is one of the top 3 builds in the game. --- now that thats out of the way, and my tits are calm, ill just leave a neat review here. MS is one of the better soulslikes out there. PROS: combat is smooth and you have more options than you think at first glance, the graphics are awesome, the story was immersive and mystifying, and the bosses can feel challenging at times. - CONS: nitpicking here, item variety, enemy variety, and replayability was outside of this games scope. what that means is i wish i could play this game more at the time and i beat it like, 3 times lol. its probably the best criticism a game of this scope can get, because the team was quite small at the time. but yeah, it looks like the sequel is definitely fixing this so im super excited. --- so yeah. as always. dont listen to the haters. this is a great game for what it was and just because we are all hype for the amazing sequel, thats no reason to review bomb the first game. the first game is even better than the beta in a a few specific areas. its defintely worth your time if you want to be immersed in the world theyve built over the years.
well, im trying to get all of the achievements and iv beaten the main game in obsidian dark form (no hit), but i have to say, this game is suffering. they were right when they called the achievement for beating the game in obsidian dark form "Life Is Suffering". i still don't really understand why we don't get a reliable healing source, but the hardening is AWESOME. the person who thought came up with it is truly a genius. there are few things more satisfying than falling off a ledge and turning into stone mid-fall and obliterating everything underneath you. however i can't really see anyone truly enjoying this game unless they prefer the slower-paced defensive souls-like combat that the hardening requires. but its really cheap on sale! no reason not to try it out! ;)
A decent Dark Fantasy Action-RPG, heavily influenced by Dark Souls, but not without its own interesting ideas and twists. It takes a little time getting used to because there isn't much handholding, but once it clicks, it's a fun time, despite some shortcomings such as low enemy variety and a samey looking hub world. It's not very long (12-15 hours), but that's a plus in my eyes because it doesn't overstay its welcome. Overall, it's a solid game and quite outstanding if you keep in mind that it was made by a small team.
I am tossing my hat into the ring here because of how many comparisons I read stating that this isn't like the second game at all. First and foremost, this is the first entry into the Mortal Shell series and I am glad it was a solid starting point. I do not think you should get this game if you can't handle a little bit of clunk like how OG Dark Souls 1 was. It's the first entry into a souls-like experience that doesn't completely follow the same formula, so if you like Elden Ring you might not like it because it isn't as fluid or quick. However, if you like the challenge that the enemies give and the toughness of each encounter... I must say it is very promising. There are also 4-5 different "shells" you can play with (depends if you get the dlc) and then roughly the same amount of weapons too. If you like higher stamina at the cost of lower health, you have that. If you want that in vice versa, you get that too (by far that was my favorite.) Want a mix of both, that is an option. This game is grueling with it's map because there isn't one. It drops you in the game with nothing but your skills to your name and it expects you to figure it out. Now, I would say that it is a bad game design choice if the game was longer. There is also the main difference that gives it an edge in the souls-like genre. The ability to be a Metapod and use harden. It adds a very interesting dynamic in your attacks and it gives you the ability to block soft blows with it. If you can get to the point where you can freeze your attacks mid-swing and have an enemy attack you afterwards only to then get hit by you. It is one of the best feelings when you can combo that back to back like flowing water. Now, I beat the game in under 8 hours, but I did play it on console before, so I would probably give it 10ish hour run time. Also, when there is only 3 main directions that you have to follow to get to where you need to, I don't understand why people give it flack for that. It is a short game with branching paths that you basically only have to figure out where the 3 other main areas are while also fighting the enemies. For people who say the game is too hard, I would advise going with more health over more stamina and slow the game down, so it is easier to grasp the controls and attacks of the enemies. I would also encourage the use of picking up all the healing mushrooms in the starting area as much as you can because then you won't have to worry about wasting huge healing items on a new encounter of someone smaller. OVERALL: Suck it up. Find what combination fits your style and skills the best and then use that. There is a wide variety to choose from. If the game is "too hard" then it's just not for you because it is in fact WAY easier than any Dark Souls game out there BY FAR. It is a Dark Souls lite. I would also extend my review in stating that not recommending this game because it is not like the second one makes me enjoy realizing I have common sense and a "WELL DUH" factor as per it is the first installment and we always hope the next one is going to be better. But, actually go into the game with a fresh perspective and just give it a damn shot.
After long 5 years I decided to platinum this game and I must say that Mortal Shell is DoW3 of Souls-like games: an orgy child of Scorn, Witcher 3 and Chernobylite that does its best to look like a love letter to Dark Souls games; map size is laughable especially when you MUST run through it 9 times (2 full playthroughs + 7 in virtuous cycle); bugs that can compete with original SoC; lore that makes DS 2 look like a War&Peace; and my favorite - the ng+ balance that turns almost everything in Seat of Infinity into Big Smoke, unless you have +10 hammer and chisel, so you can spam 1st ability without cooldown. Definitely a shamefur dispray.
