The game is fine. But I'm a player who needs a story, and a fan of Brandon Sanderson. His involvement in this must have been really token. Interesting game idea, but I don't think it was worth the money I paid for it. The story is thinner than tissue paper. Doubtless better for PvP play than PvE, but hoped for a proper campaign and the game has now been abandoned by the developer, presumably due to failing to reach financial targets. Decent tactical turn-based match-play, but no story to give it substance.
I remember picking this up out of interest a while ago, and after not having a good time with the performance, I put it down and forgot about it hoping it would polish up out of early access. As of now, not really anythings changed. They've altered the singleplayer to be more interesting being more of a roguelike squad strategy with its gamemodes. Plus they removed the really really strange monetization that used to be present in the game that would have belonged more in a free to play title. This game is simply a rather quick with a low skill floor to figure out how to play it well, but not exactly having too high of a ceiling as there aren't really too many units with no additions that would alter a meta that could exist. Meanwhile the options during play are versatile but still limited enough that when also restricted by small terrains with little to differentiate each. Not to say this game isn't fun. It really is! Just that there's shockingly little to the game for a squad strategy game. It could easily be better by just adding 2v2's and bigger maps to keep things more dynamic or upping squad sizes or just doing something. How it is now is essentially a 5v5 hero shooter of a tabletop. Now there's also the thing to keep in mind that the real treasure of this game is the model system and world. This game has excellent audio dramas that really help flesh out everything in the game that you can also play in the background while playing with your models. This game gives you a set palette of black, white, green, yellow, red, blue, orange, and purple that you can mix on a set panel to get any color you want. You get a palette of the different types of glosses and glows. And a fairly large roster of set colors as well as the option to set your own colors to new custom palettes if you wish. You can apply them as washes, airbrushed on, painted, stippled or dry brushing. You can change the size of the brush, the opacity. There's a masking system to keep areas from being brushed and even a stencil system. There's even an automask feature to keep your paint to correlating parts of the model, although I do wish the masking system had more to it. There's so much to this that literally all the time spent as of this review save for maybe 1-2 hours were spent painting. These models are just tons of fun to play around with and to see it wobble around on the board and making it move about is just amazing. As cool as it all is, I do need to warn people about the game. There's not much of a playerbase, and you're not able to use your custom models in singleplayer. While the singleplayer mode still is plenty fun, it's not really substantial, just good enough to test how far you can put your decision making and squad synergy to the test and even then you're not allowed to use your custom paint jobs in singleplayer which is a massive problem when the multiplayer is in as dire of a state that its in. Throwing in the lack of variety to what kinds of matches you can have and units that can be used since none are likely to ever be added. It's just not something that I could tell you with a straight face that it's completely worth 30$, on a big enough sale? Absolutely! There's so much that's cool about this game. Just with all the things I need to give a heads up on? Do hold back.
dead game :(
No one left to matchmake with.
Best dead game. Unmatched 1v1 PvP. Please revive.
this game was so so cool when it came out sad to see that it died, i wish there were more games like it
2v2 would have saved this game.
funny for 1v1s with friends, should be more popular
If this game had co-op, it would be incredible. As is, it's.... fine. Absurdly polished, wonderful interactions, fairly interesting mechanics. Great tech art, great UI, good voice acting awesome model painter. Only PvP. Only PvP!?! Insane decision.
Bought it through a bundle, got through the tutorial, played a few AI matches, and then waited for a very long time waiting for PVP before looking at reviews and the state of the game. Its a dead game. Very unfortunately. I would love to see a Hotseat Mode for local play, but other than that? This game is fun, unique, and the mini painting tools are NEXT TO NONE (i would buy an app that lets me digitally paint minis to test things like this)
