Great game, one of the few I've purchased for console + PC because I wanted to play it in multiple locations. Unfortunately, I've crashed far more on PC than I ever did on console. Actually, I don't think I crashed on XBox once. But for PC, simply changing screens results in a crash ~20% of the time. I can't recommend the PC version when I'm crashing left & right -- Definitely pick it up on console or if your machine tolerates it, but crashing five times within five minutes is unacceptable. At least it saves frequently, only reason I didn't refund -- I haven't lost more than a few seconds of gameplay each crash. ---- *edit: after several hours of debugging, the culprit was having the Windows sound playback format set to anything other than `24 bit, 48000 Hz`. Something to do with how the sounds are encoded I guess? -- It's the only one that's not crashing me, although I suspect there's a hardware dependency in the issue's origins. Anyhoo, I can change the recommendation to a positive now that the crashing is over. Here's how to access that area if you're having the same constant crashing issues on screen change / pet action: (Right click speaker icon in taskbar, 'Sounds', 'Playback' tab, Right click on your active audio device & select 'Properties', select the 'Advanced' tab, and verify your `Default Format`)*
I was a bit unsure at the beginning if I was going to like this game that much, but once the teambuilding aspect began, I was hooked. I never ever really 100% games, but with this game I just enjoyed the endgame battles so much, I ended up doing everything. Story was whatever and although I enjoyed the exploration, it wasn't that special. If you enjoy teambuilding and skilltrees, this game gives you a very traditional rpg, with monster collecting.
Honestly I was initially really hooked with this game but once you reach a certain point the grind feels pointless because the wild monster battles are too easy but all the fights that matter suddenly feel like nothing you do matters because you are going to lose anyways and you have to grind and level up more on monotonous battles that give very little xp and the monsters you need in order to explore other parts of the map to keep the game feeling fun are not attainable without certain events behind said brick wall battles. If it wasn't so time consuming I probably wouldn't have a problem with it but I get sick of playing every hour or two because the progress is discouraging. I really really want to love this game because the concept is fun, the story is cute, the music is a bop, the pixel art is beautiful, and I LOVE the skill trees, but the game feels like it punishes you for wanting to play more of it. I could also just be bad at this game.
This game has surprised me consistently with its depth, intelligence, and yes, its heart. A perfect blend of Pokemon, Metroidvania, and Party-based RPG, "Monster Sanctuary" has been a delight from the first boot, despite grindy elements and a few RNG-dependent mechanics. This game awards exploration, experimentation, and even failure, as every encounter is a potential teaching moment which invites the player to reflect on his/her choices and ponder how to improve their performances. Platforming sections can be frustrating, as can some of the puzzles (especially the time-driven ones,) but nothing so far has been too difficult to completely discourage attempts. I have a seven-year-old, and he and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time with this title, and I have really appreciated how this game has bolstered his critical thinking skills, his memory recall, and his reading abilities. Overall, I think this game is a must-have for anyone who fondly remembers the joy of exploration in the original Metroid titles or anyone who wanted their Pokemon battles to rely on more than just a single monster's at-bat abilities. "Monster Sanctuary" is a joy to play, and I'm looking forward to delving even deeper in the NG+ modes (as well as the world of "Aethermancer" by the same team.)
