I wish I didn't have to leave this review because I had a ton of fun with this game but it needs to be said and I don't want to encourage this franchise if this is where it's going. They skipped so many things but at first I brushed them off because I was having fun with new mechanics but I realize now that I'm done with this game that it was very much cutting corners to deliver this game as soon as possible while cutting polish and efforts. Like, at first, I thought shorter dens was a good thing, it was just laziness in the end. THIS GAME DOESNT HAVE ANY POST-GAME, YOUR SAVE BRINGS YOU BACK BEFORE THE BOSS. Whoever purchased deluxe got absolutely ripped off since the promised side story is just bare bones and bring back a notoriously hated character of the franchise that they keep shoving down our throats in hope we change our mind. Anyway, even tho I had fun and finished the game, I can see clear as day that this is the future of Monster Hunter following by the disaster of Wild's release. This game is the last drop for me and I will no longer invest in this franchise until things changes, which they probably won't. Didn't think I'd drop MH after almost 15 years of playing their games.
They nerfed flying to just gliding for some reason. Rudy is all-time most insufferable rat in the whole game. A pathetic excuse of a replacement to the GOATvirou... they even lobbed the Navirou cameo into a nothing burger paid dlc. Tho I will admit controls are more streamlined and swapping between monsties is very smooth. Just why the hell can't we fly and instead have to make do with air vents? You telling me a RATHALOS king of the skies- flies the moment it's born needs a damn updraft to fly? Ridiculous, especially since Stories 1 and 2 you can fly just fine. Even with all the new movement options and mechanics, exploration feels worse than Stories 2.
Good writing, a solid experience, and charming creatures that you hatch, and raise to become companions to help protect nature...as well as help restore wildlife habitats by releasing extra creatures back into the wild, too...which is ideal for making various creatures easier to find and obtain! And even brings in variants of certain animal breeds and species, too! You know what? Among the "Monster Hunter Stories" games, this is the best one, so far! The problem? It crashes too much on my powerful gaming PC, so, until further notice, DO NOT get it on Steam; get it on CONSOLE, instead! (Nintendo Switch 2, Sony PlayStation 5, etc.)
After going through a monster hunter stories (or MHS) series binge play, i found that out of all of them i enjoyed this game the most. I'm going to rip the band aid off and say this now; the MHS series doesn't really have the most ground breaking plots or gameplay. It goes from a child's anime in MHS 1 to MHS 2 where the story is more akin to something like dragon ball or one piece. And then you hit MHS 3 which i can only compare to a slightly toned back fire emblem plot. This is to say you shouldn't come to these games expecting an expedition 33 or Nier. What i can say is that you can always come to these games expecting a good time. I feel the plot of MHS 3 was a MAJOR step up from the other games and i felt that there was drama, decent depth, enjoyable characters and interesting plot points. The gameplay is the best its been; you can switch monsties on the spot, movement feels fluid and fun, and the combat is enjoyable. Though my couple of complaints are that there are some DIABOLOCAL one shots that you can't do S HIT against. What ever sadistic f uck came up with the invasive monster difficulty, and then locked an important upgrading material behind an rng drop from them to get the best gear maxxed out actually makes me want to rip my hair out. But hey, i already said not to expect the best, it is what it is. I know there were complaints about post game content being non existent but its more really that the games ending Breath of the wilds; which means that after you beat the final boss it will put a special star next your save and you reload before the final confrontation. I don't personally mind, but i know that was something people complained about. Over all, i would recommend only getting this game on sale, as i do not think this game is 70 dollars worth of content, it's like a Kirby game, its fun, but its sorta over priced.
I wish there was an achievement for the amount of times this game crashes at the stables
It's a good game, but it's a bit disappointing as a follow up to Monster Hunter Stories 2. Mechanically almost everything in the game is the same. The battle system, monster dens/eggs/hatching, the gene system, the field monster skills, shop system, equipment forging, graphics, menus, it's all ported over pretty much untouched. So if you liked the previous game you will certainly like this one. The major additions they did add in the monster restoration system are fairly good though. In previous games you'd end up with tons of just junk monsters that would sit in the bank and do nothing after you pillage whatever good genes they had. In this game, you establish bases in the parts of the large overworld maps, and then you can release monsters into that area. The more you release of a specific type the higher rank that monster gets in that area, which then boosts future eggs of that monster as well as having more of that monster show up in the overworld itself. Also depending on the region's monster makeup you can trigger monster mutations and alt versions. It's a very nice system allowing you to stock monsters that you want to farm and then finding them to fight to gather their parts, as well as thematically seeing more of the monsters wandering the world. Every other change is basically for the worse though. Flying was nerfed into the ground and now you can only glide. The story is mediocre. I'm not even sure why you still have a forced Ratha in your party anymore because he barely matters to the story (until the very end) and he's just....there, taking up a party slot. The biggest travesty is even though the battle system is almost unchanged, they actually ruined combat. The combat is based around a weapon triangle and then attack type triangle (red > green, green > blue, blue > red) and memorizing enemy monster attack patterns and using the right attack color to gain an advantage against the enemy's attack. The devs thought this was too easy or something, and so now enemy monsters barely use colored attacks, instead using untyped yellow attacks constantly. This wouldn't be that bad if they didn't also introduce bonkers level scaling. Monsters slightly higher level than you will be yellow flagged, and monsters higher level than that will be red flagged. You basically have zero chance against a red flagged monster because every attack they use will one shot you even through defense buffs. In previous games you could use a variety of tricks to negate the few untyped attacks they would use and scrape out a win, but now it's impossible as they spam yellow aoe attacks constantly that one shot your entire team. The game has plenty of tools that you're supposed to use to deal with these attacks, yet they are inadequate. Traps are super effective when they work, but many monsters are immune. You could use accuracy down debuffs and dodge up buffs, but now you're trusting RNG. You could topple/stagger enemies by running out their wyvernfell gauge, but you often cannot control when this happens because your AI teammate will choose to attack or not on their own. You can break specific monster parts often stunning the enemy or preventing specific attacks, but again not entirely controllable as the AI team member might break them early when you don't want to yet. You can use your monster synergy skill while riding to cancel an enemy's turn, but riding has been nerfed through a big reduction in kinship gauge gains, and kinship isn't shared if you frequently switch monsters because stamina regen has been (surprise surprise) nerfed. You can use certain weapon attacks that guarantee dodge or counter attacks, but these often have big stamina costs so can't be done repeatedly. You can try status ailments like blind or sleep, but again, RNG. The entire system was based around routinely winning head to heads before (stamina gains, kinship gains) but without them, everything is an unbalanced mess. As a result you get fights where you just get wiped out with seemingly nothing you could do, and then on the next attempt win easily because favorable things happen. It's beyond frustrating. The devs even know they ruined things, because your AI team member will randomly use one of the rarest items in the game that restores a heart for free as an extra action at the end of their turn on you. They have an unlimited supply (you don't of course) and this was clearly added by the devs after playtesting showed how unfair their changes to the combat system were, so they threw this in as a desperate patch for the difficulty. The only real solution is just to overlevel. Eventually enemies stop outscaling you and suddenly the attacks that were oneshotting you don't one shot you and you win easily. The game isn't ruined by a long shot by this, it's just less of a strategy/puzzle game now and more of an RPG where overleveling trumps all. But they really need to fix this if they're gonna make another one of these games.
