Gráficos / Video73D anime cumplidor: luce bien, no sorprende.

Historia7Es el gancho principal: para fans, es “hogar”.

Ambientación7Fantasía mágica bien reconocible y coherente con la serie.

Efectos (VFX)7Hechizos vistosos: el espectáculo vende.

Música6Acompaña, pero rara vez se roba el show.

I wish there was some sort of way to give a neutral review because this game has both positives and negatives. The positives are that the game has good 'bones'. The guild hall upgrade system and working your way up to becoming the #1 guild feel great to interact with. You are constantly getting upgrades and feeling stronger. It also has some great small interactions between cast members and you can tell some of the writers adored the anime. But then there's the negatives. It is wild to me that this game has a base price of $60 when I'm pretty sure the average PS2 game had a bigger budget. This might be one of the worst adaptations of a anime's story I've ever seen. You can first see the problems at the very beginning of the grand magic games. In the 'maze' part of the GMG, elfman isn't even a playable party member, twilight ogre is a bunch of generic monsters rather than actual models, and there is literally no maze to traverse. Then the first day of the GMG consists of them saying, okay, let's send Gray out to fight in match one, fade to black, fairytail lost. The ONLY match we get to see from day one is Lucy vs Flare, who by the way is the ONLY character with a model from the entire team of Raventail. Not a single character from quatro cerberus has a model, mermaid ONLY has kagura, Jura vs Laxus is a fade to black bc they didn't make a model for Jura, Sabertooth cuts Rufus and Orga entirely, Hisui and Arcadios are stills from the anime rather than actually in the game. Basically, the amount of cut content is obscene. The prime laughable moment for me was when they open the eclipse gate, and rather than animating ANY of the celestial spirits, they just cut to a wall and someone says "Wow! All 12 zodiac spirits!" Then there is also the negatives of the animations, with some characters having quite a bit of detail in their abilities like Wendy, and then looking at Natsu with most of his attacks not even looking remotely accurate to the move or well animated. Only a few characters actually have good attack animations and the rest are very phoned in. I feel like this game had a lot of potential, but it was obviously unfinished and needed a much larger budget. Perhaps if they hadn't tried to over ambitiously cover two of the longest arcs in the anime on a shoestring budget, we might have seen a semi-faithful GMG arc, but alas, it was painful to play through the story, even if the systems outside of that are pretty decent. I would say this game is worth about $10, despite Koei Tecmo hilariously trying to price this game in the $60 bracket, a higher bracket than Expedition 33. If you ever see it on sale for $10, I'd say that's about the quality of game you're getting, and it's worth it for that price.
Fairy Tail is a game I genuinely enjoyed as a big fan of the series. However, I wouldn’t consider it canon, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend using it as a replacement for the anime or manga, as there are differences that can create inconsistencies. Overall, the game is fun. I liked the combat system, and the request board is a fantastic feature. The graphics are also quite nice, and at times I really felt like I was inside the Fairy Tail world (though that’s probably partly because I’m a big fan). One downside is the lack of an open world. Being able to freely explore the world would have suited Fairy Tail much better. Another issue is the difficulty – once you reach a higher level and get a few “prestige” upgrades, the game becomes too easy. The request board is great at first, but over time it becomes repetitive. Doing the same tasks over and over again, especially when they’re no longer challenging, gets boring. Since you need to complete almost everything for achievements, this eventually felt like a chore, and I found myself just wanting it to end. Despite that, I still highly recommend the game to Fairy Tail fans as a nice bonus experience. There aren’t many games from this universe, so it’s a welcome addition. The standard edition is more than enough, as the deluxe version doesn’t add much. It’s best to pick it up on sale. Overall rating: 8.5/10
