I had a lot of fun trying out this game, and it went immediately on my "continue playing" list. I am a big fan of good rogue-likes, and I really enjoyed learning the mechanics and meeting the characters. I've never quite seen something like the way you get your energy to fight, and I am excited to see more!
This game is such a perfect combination of combat gameplay and cozy scenery. I love that the town has Stardew Valley vibes and a rich backstory that gets better and better the longer you play. It's hard not to get addicted to a game that has both boba and a quest to defeat evil spirits.
Backed this on kickstarter and have been looking forward to it for a really long time! Lovely art, music, and storytelling. Looking forward to seeing it continue to evolve over time!
It was fun playing so far. Controls are very good. Loved the music. That riot mechanism is pretty awesome.
The overall presentation is great! Love the music, and the visuals. Especially the dialogue box art. As to be expected of a roguelike, it's pretty challenging, There's a lot to learn and watch out for, but once I started to understand the flow of the Lunar Blood system the game really started to pick up. Amidst what can become bullet-hell combat, it's a satisfying risk reward gamble to manage. Because the pacing is dictated by the enemy attacks there's occasional lulls in combat, but they're honestly nice breaks when the fights get real hectic. That being said, even if things get to be a lot, there's difficulty sliders in the options and they're way more customizable than a simple, "easy medium hard" Takes some time to really appreciate the combat, but it's worth it. And as much as I've enjoyed the combat, my favorite part of this game is the characters. I love talking to all of them! And I haven't even met everyone yet haha. But everyone's got a distinct personality that collectively makes losing and returning to the hub a fun part of the experience. Very excited to see the rest of this game as more updates come out.
The character art is great and the character writing is really charming - lots of good humor. As this game moves forward in early access, I'll look forward to seeing more of them all (especially the spirit siblings and Grandmother). In combat, the lunar rot (and how not to let it kill me) was what took a minute to understand. Got the hang of it, though. This game's combat is less about shooting abilities at all times and a bit more about positioning and timing.
Fun rogue-like with a nice twist with the lunar blood and rot mechanics. Have had some great moments on my last legs with lunar rot going all in on dash attacks desperate to get to the next room. Keen to see more from the team! (also can give cat scritches, 10/10 no notes)
I'm early into playing this but I had to leave a review & give my first takes! Firstly - I love how character driven it is & the story-line really intrigues me, it's not trope-y at all which is usually my bugbears for these kinda games. The character design and personalities in this game are super charming, I'm really excited to see them develop later on in the game. The play itself is quite challenging, but for me that's a key motivation for roguelikes so I'm okay with it. Its very Hades-esque, which is great for folks like me who are waiting for Hades 2 lol The general vibe of the game is great too - I love the aesthetics and the soundtrack. One thing to note: this game is in early access and it's getting developed by a small indie team - so I honestly think folks should consider that when playing this, as there's bound to be some bugs/placeholder content, which is totally fair and understandable - the devs have been upfront with this too, which is great! For me, I'm really excited to keep playing and to get to know Robin some more 8-)
The best parts about Midautumn are its characters, artwork, music, and storyline. The characters are charming and down-to-earth. Their character designs stand out. The background art, sprite art, and environments look great. The storyline is related to the Midautumn Festival, which is celebrated in many Asian countries. There are also many elements from various Asian folklore, not just Chinese. The game is personally meaningful to me, being a part of the Asian diaspora (specifically Vietnamese). It's just so rare to see Vietnamese in media anywhere... As for its worst parts...I'll be honest, the launch day could've been better. The game still had too many bugs. It felt like it was released too soon. However, since the Midautumn team has steadily improved the game with bug patches and addressing players' concerns, I still feel that the game has a lot of potential. But...if you want a fully polished game, I would suggest waiting for the game to be on sale when it's a lot further in its development. I don't regret buying it on launch day. I hope my purchase will help fund the Midautumn team's game development. This is also my first time directly participating in a video game's development and getting to see how it's created while playing the game's early versions. Seeing the developers react directly to our comments, concerns, and fanart on social media is fun. Talking to an indie game team has been a new experience in learning the creative process for game development, character creation, and story writing.
Play tested this game a bit waaay back when, and it's great to see how much it has shaped up since then. The central mechanic offers a really interesting risk reward dynamic where you have to absorb lunar energy, but keep it for more than five seconds or get hit and it rots. The more lunar energy you have, however, the more powerful you become. The setting is also really appealing to me. I was already familiar with a decent bit of Greek mythology in Hades, but markedly less so with Midautumn's, which makes reading up on lots of Asian stuff very fun, especially as an abc.
