Metal Gear Solid: The gold standard of gaming. I’ve played this game on PS1, PS2, PS3, PS5, and now on Steam—and it hits me with the exact same intensity every single time. MGS1 is more than just a game; it is a masterclass in design and a blueprint for cinematic storytelling that was decades ahead of its time. Hideo Kojima created a foundation for modern gaming that hasn't lost an ounce of its depth, tension, or emotional impact. Everything important has already been said about this title, so I will keep it simple: this is an essential experience for every gamer. I am still holding out hope for a proper, faithful remake that gives this masterpiece the tribute it truly deserves. An absolute legend. 10/10.
Maybe it's just me, but this game is very poorly aged gameplaywise. I've been stuck on that stupid cyborg ninja boss for god knows how long, and I'm genuinely going to have an aneurysm if I hear that game over screen one more time. Story and visuals hold up. I really like them. You'll probably like them too. But the gameplay reeks and is making me reconsider getting the other MGS games.
The Greatest Story ever told MGS 1 redefined the game medium in so many ways but what stands out to me having played 1000s of games and this one many times is how much the story holds up decades later. Humanity and its history of striving for a peaceful future has been fraught with so many challenges one of which is maintaining the vast power we wield that is only growing with time. At some point it feels enviable that we are doomed for horrific destruction, nuclear war genetic modification and our march towards becoming god has huge potential for deep suffering. MGS 1 lets these concepts slowly sink into your mind in a way that you will never forget... you will think about this game and its concepts long after you have played it. Many of the things this game stokes fear about what might come to pass and it feels almost prophetic given how long ago it was made. Nuclear war is manual but one day it wont be and then begins the war of hacking Ai back and forth trying to prevent the end of times. What will become of humans and will we still be human any more with vast genetic editing and cybernetic augmentations... MGS plants deep dark seeds of truth within you without giving any answers as to what may come thats for you to ponder before bed and your nightmares begin. We often worry about trivial things in life but MGS1 warns us that ther are much bigger problems heading our way and someone is going to have to solve them one day or another. 10/10 the pinnacle of video game story telling strap in gamer you wont forget this tale.
I never played this when it was new, but I kind of can't believe it was originally released in 1998. Everything about it- from the obtuse camera limitations, awkward combat, valid critiques of the military industrial complex and breakdown of genre conventions- feels like an indie game released a couple years ago made by five guys that wins a bunch of awards but never finds commercial success. Kojima really is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ auteur lol Don't try to do all the VR missions for the achievement though, or you might actually go insane
gameplay makes me want to skin myself alive
Good game, but froze on cutscene after metal gear rex fight multiple times at the same spot so i was not able to finish the game
This game was one big learning curve I will admit that. Don't get me wrong I loved the story, the characters, and of course the funny banter, but I will admit the gameplay did show its age. I just am not a fan of fixed camera angles so this game was extremely difficult for me to navigate the first 7 hours but afterwards I got the hang of it. Overall, I do like this game would love for this game to get a remaster some time soon.
it was really fun to learn how to play there are moments when the game makes you go back a forth between places
(sniperwolf boss fight, pal keys)
other than that i really enjoyed the game and will be trying to 100 percent it

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is good i can't believe it took me years to play it
