For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. Memories Off #5 Togireta Film is a character-driven romantic visual novel that takes a noticeably reflective approach to love, friendship, grief, and the difficulty of moving beyond a painful past. Developed by MAGES. Inc. and published by Spike Chunsoft Co., Ltd., it represents the fifth main entry in the Memories Off series and preserves the traditional visual novel structure of extensive reading, character interaction, important decisions, branching routes, and multiple endings. Its greatest appeal comes from its emotional storytelling rather than mechanical complexity, making it best suited to players who enjoy patient narratives where relationships gradually reveal deeper personal conflicts. The story centers on Haruto Kawai, a university student whose enthusiasm for filmmaking has faded following the death of his close friend Yusuke Hina. The two once shared creative ambitions, but Yusuke's absence leaves Haruto unable to fully continue with the dream they pursued together. A year later, filmmaking has become less of an exciting aspiration and more of a reminder of what he lost. This establishes a melancholy foundation that distinguishes the story from lighter romantic visual novels. Haruto's development revolves around more than finding a romantic partner, as he must also determine whether he can confront his memories and regain the motivation to create something meaningful. The situation changes dramatically when Mahiro Sendo enters Haruto's life. Her connection to Yusuke and the circumstances surrounding the past immediately creates uncertainty and emotional friction. Rather than functioning merely as another romantic interest, Mahiro becomes an important catalyst for reopening issues that Haruto and those around him have never completely resolved. Yusuke's younger sister Asuka also plays an important role, and the relationships between these characters gradually expose different interpretations of loss, responsibility, affection, and regret. One of the game's better qualities is the way romance develops alongside the larger emotional conflict. Characters have their own personalities and personal concerns instead of existing solely to provide different romantic outcomes for the protagonist. Haruto's interactions with Mahiro, Asuka, Kazuki, Miumi, Mizuho, and the wider cast help establish a believable social circle with shared history. The routes provide opportunities to examine these characters more closely, while multiple endings encourage additional playthroughs for anyone interested in understanding the broader picture. Certain routes inevitably feel more connected to the central themes than others, but exploring several paths provides a more complete appreciation of the cast. Gameplay remains deliberately conventional. Most of the player's time is spent reading dialogue and narration before occasionally making decisions that affect subsequent events and relationships. There are no demanding combat systems, exploration mechanics, or elaborate minigames competing with the narrative. Consequently, enjoyment depends heavily on whether the player becomes invested in the characters. Those expecting frequent interaction may consider the experience overly passive, while established visual novel enthusiasts should feel comfortable with its straightforward structure. Achievements and gallery-related progression provide additional incentives for completionists to pursue different outcomes. The filmmaking theme gives the narrative an identity beyond its romantic elements. Haruto's unfinished creative ambitions become symbolic of his emotional condition, with the abandoned project representing a part of his life that stopped progressing after Yusuke's death. Returning to filmmaking therefore becomes connected with confronting memories rather than simply restarting a hobby. This thematic relationship between creativity and emotional recovery gives several dramatic moments greater significance and helps unify otherwise separate romantic routes around a common idea of finding a reason to move forward. Its visual presentation retains the recognizable appearance of a Japanese visual novel originating from the mid-2000s. Character designs have a distinctly older anime aesthetic compared with modern releases, but the Full HD presentation allows the artwork to appear cleaner on contemporary displays. The style may initially seem dated to players accustomed to newer visual novels, yet it also contributes considerable nostalgic character. Expressive portraits and event illustrations handle most of the visual storytelling, while full Japanese voice acting strengthens emotional scenes and gives individual characters clearer personalities. The soundtrack complements the story's reflective atmosphere particularly well. Music tends to remain supportive rather than dominating scenes, helping conversations involving nostalgia, sadness, romance, and uncertainty maintain the appropriate tone. Combined with the voice performances, it makes quieter sequences more affecting. The tradeoff is pacing. The game frequently allows conversations and relationships considerable time to develop, so players wanting constant twists or immediate romantic progression could find some sections slow. Its deliberate pace works better when approached as a lengthy character drama rather than a fast-moving romance. Language support is an important consideration. English is not officially supported, with the available text options centered on Japanese and Chinese languages while the spoken dialogue remains Japanese. Since virtually the entire experience depends on understanding dialogue, narration, choices, and subtle emotional exchanges, the absence of English support creates a substantial barrier for English-only audiences. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Ultimately, Memories Off #5 Togireta Film succeeds because its romance is intertwined with a thoughtful examination of unfinished dreams and lingering grief. Its traditional mechanics and slow pacing make it a specialized experience, while the absence of English localization further restricts its audience. For players who can understand one of the supported languages and appreciate classic Japanese visual novels, however, the strong character relationships, branching narratives, nostalgic artwork, voice performances, and emotionally grounded filmmaking theme create a memorable experience that rewards patience. The echoes of young romance, once so vivid, now fade like pages turning in the wind, leaving only a gentle trace as stepping into a new beginning. Not just for the characters in the game, but for everyone who played it as well.
one of the stronger installments in the memories off series, but still has its problems. the setting is contained to keep things well paced, storylines develop naturally and stay on target, twists and other big reveals work for the most part, although some feel forced. overall, the characters are quite strong, except shuuji. he is a worthless waste of space loser who does nothing but ruin every route he has a part in. he is a forced drama device with 0 likeability, 0 purpose. you can tell from the second he is introduced exactly why he will be a problem, and it plays out exactly as you could imagine. garbage character. the other characters are genuinely all good, some even bridging over to great. kise is a welcome addition returning from memories off 4, and mahiro stands among my favourite characters in the entire series, her route being the best this game has to offer, by a long shot. its solid. mahiro route is great for a few big reasons, but it does drag just a bit at times. her route is better if you have played all of the previous games in the series before this. they do a really good job utilising what they had build prior to this game in an unexpected way, very well done. the story could have used another pass as some aspects were disappointing or weak, kazuki and shuuji for example have next to nothing to do, they gave literally everything to kise (which im fine with because she is s tier). shuuji is a worthless character across the board and should have been cut. shin also says some things that make no sense, unless i missed something, there is one point in particular where he knows something he absolutely shouldn't know. the ending of mahiro's route is also on the weaker side, but if you think outside peak/end principle, mahiro route is pretty good. she is s tier, one of the best girls memories off girls, and they utilise the series to make her route uniquely interesting. it works. it just needed another pass to tidy up the scenario writing. perhaps 2 more passes. or 3. asuka's route is great until the ticking time bomb that is shuuji ruins everything. everything is great, fun, asuka is very cute, then BOOM gay ♥♥♥♥♥♥ plot device character forces drama and boom boom boom 5 useless scenes in a row of the main character just talking to all the other characters to hear what they have to say, one after the other ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BOOOOOOORING just waiting for it to all be over when the answer is PLAIN AS DAY OBVIOUS. 'visual novel mc lobotomises himself', nothing new under the sun. asuka's route slowly falls apart, for really no reason. it doesnt make sense, it doesnt work, its just disappointing. sad. kazuki is super cute, very interesting character, but her route basically doesnt exist. there is no story, nothing happens, nothing going on. they are making the movie as normal, then one day kazuki says something equivalent to 'hey, how's it going?' and BOOM everyone quits on the spot and the story just ends. what? what just happened? what happened to shuuji and asuka? why does mahiro change her entire motivation on a dime and disappear forever over nothing? even kise becomes a different person and abandons everyone. they don't even wrap it up, it just stops. 'well at least we have each other~!' ♥♥♥♥ YOU. complete joke of a route. nothing happens. useless. her other endings are even worse. pointless waste of time. just skip through to unlock the cute kazuki CGs. mizuho route is nice initially, haruto and mizuho have good chemistry and the burger wack stuff is sweetly endearing, BUT, once the story comes in everything falls apart. noticing a trend yet? for some reason asuka becomes an unbearable ♥♥♥♥♥, cussing out her coworkers and boss!? who is this new asuka? at least haruto stays the same, but that doesnt really help as his default is a useless lying ♥♥♥♥♥♥. shin is only there for weak and gay NTR bait and to recycle lines from mahiro route. everybody knows everybody 3 times over, its just too much. this route should have been softer and disconnected from everything else, not everything has to be connected. im not even going to mention the EGREGIOUSLY AWFUL ending. mizuho is a cool character, but her backstory ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks ass, not interesting at all, and it makes me wonder if the random mikki stuff that never seems to have any point whenever it is brought up elsewhere was shoehorned into the game purely for her route. also shoehorned is her one scene lizard. her route is genuinely great for the first 50%. it works until it dies. miumi route is good, but dull. to be honest, i completely forgot she existed when i was writing this review. her route is the 2nd best in the game, but that is really only because her route doesnt have glaring issues like asuka/kazuki/mizuho. outside of mahiro route, miumi's does the best at actually utilising the movie theme (on that note, make sure you play miumi route before mizuho route because mizuho route needlessly spoils a cool reveal in miumi's route). there is some wee woo suspend your disbelief nonsense in miumi's route, but it's fine. miumi is cute, her tachie and poses fit her character perfectly and are the best in the game (and perhaps the series). it is paced well and the story is nice enough, but again, its just dull. it isnt memorable, feels bargain bin in terms of ideas. i've seen this same sort of story done better in 10 different places. BUT, all that being said, its fine, and that's good enough, isnt it?
