Backing this on kickstarter, to then having it be early access on Steam feels like a slap to the face. The product has not improved since beta testing by any noticeable amount. The kickstarter raised a good amount of money, and the art team has obviously put in some work on the city components. The tools to build maps do not work well though. It's surprisingly tedious for a program that touts being able to build fast. I tried making several maps for different one shots/campaigns to make my investment feel worth it. Unfortunately, putting any more of my time into using this product just makes the money sink even more obvious. As an aside, the team is not very actively helpful. After the first time the discord server got hijacked I have been unable to post. I tried reaching out through multiple forms of communication to figure out how I could get access back but I've never received any response. At this point I do not care for receiving any support. Do not support this team until the product is fully released and you can judge full value of it in it's final form.
I really wanted to love this product, backed it on Kickstarter, waited patiently as the developers amended and revised timelines, assuring that the early access launch would be something amazing. It wasnt, the product is lacking a lot of functionality other similar products offer, snapping of items for one. It is very basic in what it has available - even for early access. To put it into context Dungeon Alchemist was considerably further on at launch than this product. On top of that after having spent a lot of time trying to get to grips with the very clunky controls and various issues on placement, the game crashed and the saved map i had been working on had been wiped. Days of work gone. It will hopefully improve, but the issues it currently face means i will not be using it again until i see significant increases in options, useability and stability.
I don't want to be mean - this software is NOT worth the $60 i paid. I am afraid it will never be worth that amount. I hope that this game becomes more usable - $40 is a complete rip off for it's current state in early access. This project was a Kickstarter that raised upward of $830,000. Even with a small development team - their time and money raised was obviously squandered. I paid extra for the beta program. That was a mistake. I think in the years using MoR, i make 1 map that i used in a DnD game via FoundryVTT. I don't think I'll ever use MoR again because there are already a lot of good competing map software in the 'world building' space. If you're looking at this in hopes to have a cool world map or something - consider donjon.bin.sh/ - it's 100% free, procedural, and a good quick start into generating a world map - then - after some time - pick up wonderdraft. You can hand craft the donjon map as a background map and trace a prettier version of the quick map you made. Save your money - please do not buy this in EA - Maybe, wish list, buy on sale for $4. do not spent more than or equal to $4.01. I'll check in on this software every year for no more than 5 minutes of my time.
Basic. If you have decent imagination you'll exhaust the tools here fast.
I really wanted to love this, they made a lot of sweeping promises with the kickstarter, then kept pushing back the release dates for years with even more promises, including saying they didn't want to release anything unfinished, which is fair. Now we have this, an unfinished, super basic, very limited... slop. It only kind of works, doesn't have a lot of what was promised in early days (I understand scopes change with the reality, but be honest and open), a complete lack of transparency from the devs and it really is just... not good, it's bare bones at best, they flopped hard on this, hopefully it can be like some other things with patches to make it actually usable one day, but considering where this is now and how long it took them to get to this trash, I wouldn't expect it to be good for years.
Still has a way to go, for instance their is only grass and desert biomes available at current (I do not count city tarmac as a biome), but so far it has promise. I've not tried exporting for VTT yet, but does support making images in digital, PNG and JPEG. Overall, I'm enjoying making fun little maps.
What is Master of Realms? It is software that allows you to easily randomly generate a hextile map for TTRPG. It has lots of pre-created tiles by the developers, which also have available STL files for 3D printing. My Experience This worked without any tinkering on Linux. There are some graphical rendering issues but the developers have stated they are working on improving this via a pop-up when you start the game for the first time. I was able to create a large world map and still have the game run at a decent 60FPS without issue. I tried to export my large map but it seems that I am unable to export it as it freezes at 92% for a few minutes. When its done and I try to open the file it refuses to however I am unsure if it is my linux OS or the software. So I advise keeping to the small grid sizes. Future expectations I hope that there are more pre-created tiles on the way or more editing options. I hope there will be hill tiles, terrain painitng in the tile editor and much more. Conclusion Its a solid 5/5 for me if they continue to support and improve the software!
I feel I wasted money backing this map maker its unwieldy, buggy and lacking. They took way to long to get this basic as hell product out for the money they received.
love this, Highly recommend this, I see this being a great thing for many TTRPG players who love putting maps together like I do, though for a future update could we see like a Dieselpunk add on please :3
Master of Realms
