This is one of those games that I liked more than I expected, but that I still wouldn't buy at full price. PROS +Combat: I know people have mixed feelings on the combat, but I really enjoyed it. It's definitely got XCOM vibes, but as a mini deck builder. Can missions be a little repetitive? Sure, but there are several different mission types, and that kept things fresh for me. You do end up using everyone on the team at some point or another in the story, but the vast majority of the time you can stick to your favorites and build up their abilities and your strategy. The game does reward you for taking your time, knowing your abilities, and strategizing what you want to do and in what order. Each character, including yours has a general theme or role (tank, support, AoE, etc.) but their abilities aren't exclusive to those themes, and can be customized/modified a fair bit. +Characters: You have a pretty wide variety of playable characters, which is nice. Your main character is a custom one, and I always appreciate that. The cast is, for the most part, well-written and fun to interact with. You have the option with your own character to focus more on light or dark choices and abilities, and there are definitely some NPCs that are easier to get along with on one side versus the other, which makes sense but it is a little basic sometimes. And the voice acting is on point! The game has a killer cast, many of whom you will recognize immediately. +Side Content: There is a LOT to do in this game. Much like an XCOM game, you have research projects and base upgrades, and you often need to go on random side missions before you can progress the story, but there is much more than that. You have hangouts with NPCs to build friendship, exploring the zone surrounding the base to find treasure and new powers and bits of lore. It was all interesting enough that I did most of it, but not all of the side content particularly pays off. If you're enjoying the game, you can spend a lot of extra time on it. If your time is limited for gaming (like mine) and you're mainly focused on the story, it can feel like needless fluff on occasion. +Music/Audio: The music isn't anything that is going to blow you away, but they do a solid job of capturing the action, superhero movie vibes. The sound effects are pretty strong though. Explosions feel impactful, shoving enemies into each other sounds like it has weight, and the game is good at drawing your attention to information you need to know with distinct sounds. CONS -Story: I'm torn on this one. There is a story to the game, and they do some fun world-building (although a fair bit of it, I assume, is being pulled from comics and other existing works.) And you probably don't seek out a pseudo-XCOM game primarily for a deep story anyways, but also...this IS Marvel. I did sort of expect a stronger story than we got. Or at least a more consistent one, I guess. There are moments where the dialogue and what story there is either branch out and don't really lead to anything, or occasionally even contradict themselves. It's fine, but not really a selling point for this one. -Performance: This is a minor issue, but the game isn't quite as polished as I would hope for a $60 game. It's not generally enough to affect playing the game, but it is noticeable sometimes. There are occasional texture issues on character models, Dialogue sometimes doesn't match the subtitles or happens before the trigger it should follow (ex: "Only one more [INSERT OBJECTIVE HERE]!" when there are still two or three.) The only time is was more of an issue was, unfortunately, in the final battle. A few times, there was a random bug that caused these huge rocks to spawn for no reason and get stuck in the air, forming this sort of wall that really affected the games performance until it despawned piece by piece at the end of the turn. Saving and reloading mid-combat cleared it up each time, but it was annoying, and sort of diminished the feel of the final fight. Midnight Suns is a good game, I liked it enough to play it through and do a good amount of side content. If you like Marvel, you'll probably enjoy this. If you're a fan of the XCOM games, you'll also probably enjoy this. I would recommend it. I just wouldn't pay full price for it. Wait for a sale.
Great game
Good But Flop
Gameplay gets very strategic but very good learning curve. Highly immersive and tactical but not overwhelming
Played it for 73 hours in 2023. Just installed it again today in 2026. This is a really good game, if you like the social hub aspects too.
easy to play once u watch the video playthrough of it
Such an underrated gem. A top notch tactical adventure game set in a Marvel Universe. What I found most surprising about this title was how much the interactions with characters outside of combat drew me in and made me feel like I was part of a comic book adventure. As a kid and reading comics, especially Marvel (X-Men and Spider-Man) I enjoyed the human side of these heroes as much as the fantastic; and Marvel's Midnight Suns keeps the light hearted enjoyment of the gameplay while showing us the behind the mask moments hereoes only share with other heroes. 9/10.
I scoffed at it being a card battler at first, but it only barely is. Another solid win from Firaxis with its own non-MCU story. Good for Marvel fans that want a tactical game
yes
I was thinking about how much I liked this game last night and then wondered if I ever left a positive review, and now I don't have to wonder anymore
