About
Marisa of Liartop Mountain is an adventure RPG inspired by tabletop gamebooks, where dice rolls and fork-in-the-road choices determine the outcome of a branching story with multiple endings. As Reimu, step into a literary wonderland while in search of Marisa’s whereabouts. Four Touhou heroines will guide, help, and support Reimu on her journey, but which one should Reimu listen to?
Marisa, Reimu’s close friend, has suddenly disappeared—
In her search, Reimu of Hakurei Shrine stumbles upon a mysterious book.
Inside, she finds herself in a world filled with strange inhabitants, and a hollow, empty Marisa standing before her.
"What do I want to be, Reimu?"
Can Reimu navigate the mountain of lies clouding Marisa’s heart and bring her back?
・Tabletop-style RPG
You play as Reimu, exploring the dungeon within the book <Liartop Mountain> in a quest to save Marisa.
There is one main story.
Yet the path branches out in many ways according to your choices and the roll of the dice, which then converges to the ending of your journey.
Though digital in form, this RPG recreates the feel of a tabletop session, focusing on replayability and the thrill of shaping your own adventure.

・Dice Inventory
Sometimes, luck is part of your choice.
Dice rolls influence story events and combat outcomes, but it’s not just about a single six-sided die.
As you progress, you’ll acquire special dice with unique properties; High-value dice, intentionally low ones, or dice with identical faces.
Combine them wisely, and master your fate.
・Choices and Growth with Scarlet Devil Mansion Characters
Remilia, Flandre, Sakuya, and Patchouli often chime in, offering their own opinions as selectable choices.
Sometimes their advice helps, sometimes it’s meaningless, or even troublesome.
But by embracing their suggestions, you may gain access to powerful dice.

・Rerolls
By spending CP, you can reroll and overturn unlucky outcomes.
CP can be increased by leveling up, though doing so makes it harder to raise other stats.
Will you build skill through growth, or rely on luck through rerolls?
The choice is yours.

While I have marked "No" to the question of "Would I recommend this game to other players?" I will stress that this isn't because it is a terrible game. I think this game could appeal to some people, but it did not ultimately appeal to me. At first, I did find it fun, but I feel like it overstayed its welcome by dragging on too long with progression. The way the game works is that you roll two dice for every action. However, not all of the dice are simple 1-6 faced dice. You can pick up dice which might have all 0s or a combination of half 3s and half 4s or even dice which copy the results of your other dice. There are also dice that go up to higher numbers, such as dice with a range of 3-9 instead of 1-6. Sometimes high rolling is beneficial in certain circumstances but sometimes lowballing is better, so it pays off to collect a variety of different dice depending on the situation. You also have a limited resource called "cheat points" which you can use to reroll failed challenges until you win. You have an HP stat which is kind of like a resource of its own; sometimes it is beneficial to take some damage in specific situations where doing so might yield a better result. You also have an attack stat, which is always beneficial as it adds to damage calculations after the dice have been rolled. So for instance if rolling a 6-9 would do 11 damage and you have 2 attack stat and roll a 9, you'll still be in the 6-9 range, but you'll do 13 damage. While I think the mechanics are not bad, they strike me as just a little bit too shallow. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this isn't like an RPG or something where you could invest in specific attributes to clear skill checks or anything along those lines. Everything is basically decided by how many dice you have, which dice you have, how many cheat points you have banked, and what actions you choose to take with your dice. If you're ok with rolling dice over and over for hours on end for every circumstance which arises, you might enjoy this game more than I did. My real problem with the game is that it just feels heavily padded with uninteresting scenarios. You'll sumo wrestle the same rabbits like 15 times and then go into the next chapter and calmly talk down love bandits 15 times, and the way you approach these situations is the same or nearly the same each time. After awhile, for me it got tiresome as the situations confronting our protagonists became stale quickly. I do think that for somebody with more patience, there is an interesting game underneath all the repetitive questing. One of the fun aspects of the game is that while you technically are playing as a Reimu piece inside a sort of game, the real characters are the four influencers controlling her actions: the Scarlet Devil Mansion leaders Remilia, Flandre, Patchouli, and Sakuya. You can choose which character of the group you want to accrue influence over the course of each chapter. Their personalities tend to really come out in these instances. Flandre is of course the most hotheaded and belligerent, while Remilia tends to favor negotiation and elegance. Patchouli is interested in unraveling mysteries and seems to have the most meta understanding of events. Sakuya seems to favor a wait and see/defense approach to situations a lot of the time. I think the characterization of these four was done exceptionally well in this game. My description of their personalities is definitely an oversimplification, and sometimes characters have varied and nuanced reactions to situations. This was my overall favorite aspect of the game, as I found the way the different "players" of the game (the four I mentioned) reacted to events was 100x more interesting than any of the actual events of the story itself. It's too bad these four are controlling the events of the game from outside instead of actual party members reacting directly to circumstances which arise, because it feels like they are the latter when they are actually the former.
A good game for strategy. It's obviously a dice game, so quite a bit of luck is involved, but if you play your cards right you can stack the odds heavily in your favor. Other than dice the game features a very intriguing story and some pretty decent riddles/puzzles Lastly, the music of this game is absolutely amazing, I'd expect nothing else from RD-sounds
The artwork and character interactions are nice, but it's everything else that falls flat. The game is heavily drawn out with the exact same fetch quests and gimmicks. The "combat" system gets annoying really fast due to the luck based gimmick of the dice. The story is also a confusing and hard to follow mess up until you reach the final chapter. In fact, the final chapter feels completely disconnected from everything that happens before it, aside from a few small details in the dialogue. Also that carnival chapter sucks ass. All of the carnival games require way too much luck, and some games just straight up aren't explained. The interactions between the SDM residents are cute though. Reimu and Marisa are nice additions too but they don't add enough to warrant a New Game+ playthrough.
Marisa of Liartop Mountain is a creative narrative RPG that takes inspiration from tabletop adventures and interactive gamebooks, transforming them into a digital experience centered around the beloved Touhou universe. Developed by UnknownX and Alliance Arts and published by Alliance Arts, the game follows Reimu Hakurei as she embarks on a strange and unpredictable journey to locate the missing Marisa Kirisame. Rather than presenting a straightforward quest, the game constructs an ever-changing adventure where choices, chance, and strategy work together to shape the story, creating an experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly different from conventional role-playing games. The most distinctive aspect of the game is its reliance on branching narratives driven by player decisions and dice rolls. Every encounter, event, and challenge carries a sense of uncertainty, encouraging players to think carefully about their actions. The story unfolds like a fantasy adventure book brought to life, with multiple routes and outcomes that reward exploration and experimentation. This design gives each playthrough a unique identity, as different decisions can reveal entirely new scenarios, characters, and endings. The result is a game that remains engaging long after the first completion thanks to its strong replay value. A major component of the gameplay revolves around collecting and managing a wide variety of special dice. These are far more than simple random-number generators. Some dice excel at producing high results, while others are designed around specific values or unusual effects. Certain challenges require more than simply rolling the biggest number possible, forcing players to consider which dice are best suited for a particular situation. This clever mechanic introduces a surprising level of strategy, turning what could have been a luck-based system into one that rewards planning and resource management. Players who enjoy experimenting with different combinations will find plenty of depth hidden beneath the game's accessible surface. The supporting cast also plays an important role in maintaining the game's charm. Members of the Scarlet Devil Mansion frequently offer commentary, suggestions, and guidance throughout the adventure. Their involvement creates the impression of companions participating in a tabletop campaign, adding humor and personality to the narrative. Sometimes their advice proves useful, while at other times it leads to unexpected consequences. These interactions keep the journey entertaining and help showcase the colorful personalities that Touhou fans have come to appreciate over the years. Character progression is handled through a system that allows players to improve their capabilities while mitigating the frustration of bad luck. A reroll resource enables players to challenge unfavorable outcomes and potentially change the course of events. Deciding when to spend these resources becomes an important tactical choice, especially during difficult encounters. This balance between chance and control ensures that success rarely feels completely random, preserving tension while preventing the game from becoming overly punishing. Visually, Marisa of Liartop Mountain embraces a vibrant storybook presentation that perfectly complements its fantasy themes. Character artwork is expressive and appealing, while environments resemble illustrations from an enchanted novel. The visual style reinforces the feeling of participating in a magical adventure where anything can happen. Combined with smooth interface design and atmospheric effects, the game succeeds in creating a world that feels inviting and mysterious at the same time. The audio presentation is equally impressive. The soundtrack captures both the whimsical and dramatic sides of the adventure, enhancing exploration, tense moments, and emotional scenes alike. The music helps establish a strong identity for the game and contributes significantly to the overall atmosphere. Fans of Touhou-inspired compositions will likely find much to enjoy, while newcomers can appreciate how effectively the soundtrack supports the narrative. Despite its strengths, the game is not without limitations. Players who prefer traditional RPG combat systems may find the heavy emphasis on storytelling and decision-making less exciting than action-focused alternatives. The branching structure occasionally leads to repeated content across multiple playthroughs, and some sections rely heavily on trial and error. However, these shortcomings do little to diminish the overall quality of the experience, especially considering how successfully the game achieves its unique vision. What makes Marisa of Liartop Mountain memorable is its willingness to blend genres and experiment with ideas rarely seen in modern RPGs. By combining visual novel storytelling, tabletop-inspired mechanics, strategic dice management, and the charm of the Touhou universe, it delivers an adventure that feels genuinely distinctive. The game offers a compelling mixture of narrative freedom, character interaction, and tactical decision-making that stands out in a crowded genre. For fans of story-driven experiences, branching narratives, and creative role-playing systems, Marisa of Liartop Mountain is an easy recommendation. Its imaginative design, engaging progression systems, and strong presentation make it a worthwhile journey from beginning to end. While a few pacing issues and repetitive elements hold it back from perfection, the game remains a highly enjoyable and memorable adventure that successfully captures the excitement of a tabletop quest in digital form. Rating: 8/10
This game is pretty great if you're looking for a tabletop game. All of the scenes are built out of miniature-like pieces and figures but they're animated well enough that it's not boring. There are also multiple layers of narration from the actual narrator/"Dungeon Master" to the Scarlet Devil Mansion crew who are the "players" so there's a lot of dialog to make things interesting. I did find the third chapter a little annoying due to all the instant failure states. You keep going through these loops and keep having to roll for the same encounters which means you keep having to use the same dice over and over and they only have a certain number of uses. In other chapters you can use less efficient dice and risk getting a worse outcome but in chapter 3 using less efficient dice just means instant failure and you have to start the loop over. I did make it through so it's not impossible or anything but it was a bit annoying. Aside from that, though, it's a very unique game and I had some fun with it. Check it out, if tabletop games interest you.
