If you like 2D, tough as nails games that are combo based, then look no further... this might be your new favorite game. I love how you get the entire moveset as soon as you start the game and you can access it at anytime in the menu (although it can be a little bit hard to read). This is not to say that you start with everything that the game has to offer though, because there is a charm system very similar to the one in Hollow Knight as well as weapons you can find in the levels. As for gameplay, everything is quite smooth and responsive for the most part and each level is sorta like a tiny Metroidvania map, but you will be finding keys instead of traversal upgrades. It starts off rather light but after only a few levels, the amount of enemies you fight at a time gets crazy. It will take some getting used to and after just finishing Act 1, some of those fights were super challenging and at times, claustrophobic. It forces you to be on your toes and find which enemies are the biggest pain in the ass to focus on killing first. I really like how you get healing grenades that are charged up by striking enemies, and you have to apply them to enemies and keep hitting them to reap (you see what I did there?) the benefits. You basically have to play aggressively to win, and that is perfect for a guy like me. The bosses are all balls to the wall hard and it is ultra satisfying to defeat them after the 20th attempt. There is a boss rush available as well, so after you beat the game, you can focus on those encounters if you like. To me, they are the highlight of the game and I hope the devs next project is something like Furi where it is only bosses. If you are into DMC, Hollow Knight, or Slave Zero X, you really should do yourself a favor and check this game out. I paid full price at around $11 USD and I feel like I ripped off the dev because of how much detail is in every aspect of the game.
good game :)
what are you stupid? hop on
Really interesting visuals and it is not afraid to be weird at all which I respect. However there are pretty large flaws. Definitely feels like it needs more time in the oven. Introduces way too much too quickly, and the combat gauntlets are just way too chaotic. Feels like I'm playing endgame content on the first level. Needed more iterating through actual playtests. This is not a criticism on the difficulty, but the combat/enemy/encounter design and onboarding. Silksong is difficult but intentional whereas this game is feels very messy and thrown together. Less is more. Edit: I was seeing perf issues but it was actually my controller causing it.
This game is very cool, not just the gameplay but the art and story rock. Some negative reviews I've seen have compared this game to souls-likes or said that there is no way to become stronger or gain new moves; for the first one, it's closer to a character action game like Devil May Cry than something like Salt & Sanctuary or Dark Souls, and for the second, they just missed the mechanics or expected you to have access right at the start and didn't wait a few minutes to unlock the first "shop". FIA for BOAT 2026!

this game blows
Magenta Horizon is a fun 2D stylish action game. Gretel moves really fast and there aren't any shops that you can go to that make's your character permanently stronger or more viable apart from charms and items, the move-set and damage that you get from the start is the one you keep for the rest of the game. The items are one of my favorite parts about the game as a whole, especially healing burst. It makes you be more in the offensive when you're on low health and is extremely satisfying to pull off right, doubly so in boss fights. It also always gives you a chance to bounce back after taking many hits and is the item i imagine most players prioritizing the most as obviously stated by the games completion percentage of 2.6 percent, the game is pretty hard. Even at the beginning there are many enemies that have a wide amount of attacks with small windows to avoid. The enemies don't increase in health as much as the game continues but they change by becoming more difficult to recognize the patterns of and have a much wider amount of attacks.
Reapers are especially fun to fight, the game is careful never to throw too many at you but when they appear they take the center of you're attention as they are usually the enemy that rushes towards you the most.
The game throws a lot of enemies at you but funnily enough its far easier fighting 100 enemies than it is fighting 4 of the more difficult ones. Because of the healing burst it made me recognize almost all of the early-mid game enemies as tanks of health that can sometimes fight you. It makes the game more interesting to play and it is pretty fun to make the connections as you go
such as the purple mech enemies that can be damaged heavily by an electric attack
Sometimes the game throws so many enemies at you that it can be hard to parse what you're actually looking at, I prefer when the game is throwing 4 or 3 heavily difficult enemies at you than 50 enemies, it made me focus more on the enemies move-set and made the battles tenser at a result. Charms are also a huge part of the game and especially fun to equip, some like the one that
turns your healing burst into a stun bomb
are incredibly useful, I thought it was fun to experiment and try new combinations but also some felt like they were too useful to ever really replace such as the one previously mentioned. The levels themselves are good too, A lot of times i wanted there to be more recognizable landmarks within each level so I can know where I'm going without requiring a map or being told exactly where to go. Luckily the levels are all pretty small, especially with how fast Gretel moves it isn't very hard to get to anywhere. The platforming sections sadly were a weaker part, they were too sparse and they didn't feel any fun to really pull off. Sometimes there are obstacles that I can just easily skip over because of how fast Gretel moves and it never really gets any more difficult as it goes on. The bosses are a highlight of the game, almost all of them are fun and do something interesting that makes them fun to fight.
The reaper bosses we're especially fun to fight as the attacks they did forced you to move just as fast as they did. My favorite was probably Inner nest father, the summoning of the clone and the ray attacks as well as just his appearance made it fun for me to fight him. A lot of times i felt like the bosses didn't change enough as they went on. I wish their were more bosses that had a phase 2, or some attack that changed how you fought it just enough to feel more fun.
The art is lovely as well, especially in the cinematics within the game. The game did more with it's story than I was expecting it too but it's still less of a focus for me as everything else. The game was overall pretty fun, it took me abt 25-30 hours to complete all acts minus the time I was afk which makes it pretty lengthy, I didn't feel like it was being repetitive or wasting my time most of the playthrough. I plan on playing some of the levels on reaper mode to see if anything changes. I enjoyed the game and If you want to play a good 2D stylish action game than you would probably enjoy it too.
Not for the faint of heart, even when completing on the normal difficulty. The game kinda plays like a 2D Devil May Cry with the emphasis on combos and the style-gauge. You need to have some mastery of how your different attack sequences move you around to survive even the weak enemy mobs. The healing mechanic is very unique; it requires you to attack the enemy successfully during a short window after hitting them with a healbomb. The amount you heal is proportional to how many hits you can land during this window. If you can't comfortably land attacks on the enemies in general, you won't be able to effectively heal yourself. The story (tale of the afterlife) also seems pretty interesting, and the music is very nice.
