Wonderful, imaginative, skill-expressive and difficult 2D horde slaying action game. And I gotta emphasize that it's a game where you slay hordes of enemies, there are so many enemies. It will be a messy affair and one should not come into this expecting to be able to no-hit things, or to style on the enemies in a clean and safe way; it's a chaotic, nasty and desperate clawing towards some semblance of control in the fights. Oftentimes while learning you will find yourself being juggled and stunned and combo'd by the enemies until certain death. But the more you play and explore your moveset and the more of the enemy behaviour you understand and learn to account for, the more you might realize that you CAN achieve control over the situations you're faced with. Threading the needle during all the chaos time and time again. It's very satisfying. The enemy variety is pretty insane and keeps things fresh, and it needs to be said that for a game being made by a solo dev the sheer amount of them is actually just ridiculous. That might give you the impression that it's a case of quantity over quality but I think most of the enemies are very well considered and fit into a greater whole within the roster and within the many combat arenas. The supporting elements to the gameplay in the art, music and SFX are all pretty great as well. Think the game looks appropriately unique and dreamy (or nightmarish), many of the enemy designs are fairly inspired and the soundtrack is quite varied and uses a bunch of different styles for each area theme and situation and it sounds good to kill demons. While the story isn't the main reason to play the game, I found it a pretty authentic and fitting narrative. All in all, highly recommend at least giving the game a try, because if it does click with you then it really clicks. Think this game deserves a lot more attention than it's gotten within the niche it occupies. There's a hefty demo that comprises plenty of content to chew on to make your mind up (the entirety of act 1 in a game with 3 acts). Check it out.
Brutally, disgustingly good. This is what I needed right here. I'm sad I didn't know about it earlier.
If you like a game called Pill Baby, then you might like this one. If you don't know what it is, then know both of these games are a smashing, bashing type of game where you are mostly fighting endless hordes of enemies, making for a chaotic, fun battle where you fight all types of gruesome and goofy enemies. The best part of these sorts of games is when you accidentally do some tremendous combat actions just from spamming random buttons, but in all seriousness, it's really fun when you uncover different combats with the wide range of attacks and unique items you can mix in at your arsenal. Sounds cool, right? Thinking of purchasing it? Well, I have to stop you right there. It may not seem like it, but this game is harder than it appears, with how many enemies you're fighting in one go, making it skill-based to knowing when to evade all their attacks; otherwise, it is possible to be stunlock constantly if you aren't careful (much more in higher difficulty). You can play it at the lower difficulty; that's what I ended up doing from normal and still managed to scrape by. Even saying that, I wouldn't say the difficulty is the main problem that could alienate players from playing this game but rather the platforming section, where you have to turn on switches in close proximity to each other in order to unlock the gates. While there aren't a whole lot of these sections, I find they could make or break your progression to completing the game. And some of them require tight platforming correlation, for example, hitting the switch down (around spikes that will reset you instantly) midair to bounce off from it. It may not seem like it, but executing a button prop like that may be difficult for some people to do. If a player can't do that, they can't continue through the game. I only wish there was an option to skip these sections so players aren't stuck because they aren't skilled at platforming. Unless you are good at platforming and difficult beat-'em-up games, this one may cater to you.
A beautiful art style hindered by a combat system that thinks it's devil may cry but really it's from temu. While not terrible, it's got a ton of little design flaws like flooding a level with every kind of enemy the game has to offer all at once just to ask you to become Dante with none of the tools you'd need early on. It's enjoyable if you like a challenge and i do recommend it but it's frustrating at times with it's lack of a true save system. Good on a sale.
Got my ass beat so hard I came back to life, died again, met John Magenta Horizon, got my ass kicked AGAIN, and then got a slushie 10/10, would recommend
A very snappy, fun, enjoyable and challenging 2D action game where you wail on crowds of enemies ! It's a good feeling action game, especially when you have a ton of enemies caught in your attacks and you are able to juggle them ! The combat has a lot of freedom in terms of movement and really rewards you being agressive. The name of the game is crowd control, positioning, as well as going for the right enemies first. You have various tools at your disposal such as the ranged weapons, heal bombs and the different necklace pieces for various perks you'll have to think about in combat. Tying back to the game rewarding you being aggressive, I really like the idea of the heal bombs where you have to hit enemies with them and then damaging those same enemies to recover health, it's a good risk and reward situation. While the levels themselves are quite simple (which isn't a bad thing.), I did enjoy going through them, finding the keys and the different NPCs in Act 1, it's a nice, if brief, breather from combat. However, the game definitely knows how to play to its strength, which is combat. The bosses are varied and very enjoyable to fight as well. Magenta Horizon is challenging when it comes to difficulty, thankfully there are lots of difficulty options and you can change it at any time if you struggle with the game. The developer also thought about a few accessibility options to ease you in, which I appreciate. I can see myself coming back to the game every now and then to try and get better grades, playing on higher difficulties. Aside from the gameplay, I really love the artstyle, the world and the music, they're really up my alley ! The "gothic/ cartoony" art is just very striking and colorful. I really like the character designs, especially Gretel, Aio, Blücher and Archibald. I'm always fascinated by how different artists depict the afterlife and death, which is why I really enjoyed this world. All the NPCs you find and how Gretel interacts with them is just very charming. Honestly, I don't have many gripes with the game, I was a little lost in the bigger levels, but even then, you have the option to turn on guiding clues to help you. It's just a fun, challenging, satisfying and straightforward 2D action game that's just my style, I really enjoyed it.
This game has BALLS I mean, there definitely were moments, when I would gladly punch developer in the face. But I would do that somewhat respectfully. Make no mistake, this is not your usual "hey, fellow dudes, do you like hollow knight?" soulsey-parry-metro--something game. This is an action game with a BIG emphasis on the "action" part. It's hyperfocused, it's chaotic and it just does not care about modern game tropes. The enemies are out for blood and there are LOTS of enemies. You have a varied and distinctive moveset, but there is no magic "parry everything" or "dodge everything" button. Your only salvation is your mobility and your crowd control instruments. Even the healing itself is somewhat of a combat mechanic, and you have to master it, because you WILL get hurt, and the only way to get your health replenished is to whack the enemies just as hard as they whack you. Is it balanced? Well, not exactly. Is in fun? I am not, by any means, a skilled action player, and I say: YES, it fkng IS. You will get smacked, you will get overwhelmed, and sometimes a single miscalculation will ruin your entire fight. But at the same time, a single well timed action can turn a desperate situation into a victory. And when the flow kicks in it kicks in HARD -- the way no "balanced" modern action game can. In short -- this game is part Ultrakill, part Ninja Gaiden (it even has an on-land UT), part CBT seccion and all sause. (My only gripe is that the control scheme for the subweapons is really not that great for how critical they are for the crowd control. Oh, and the pogo-platforming on the spikes -- i hate pogoing on the spikes, please don't make me do pogoing on the spikes, I really don't like that! Pogoing on the enemies is ok though)
The best Character Action Game since Bayonetta 1.
Extremadamente difícil y muy gratificante a la vez.
Amazing game that does so much right with its Mechanics that it is honestly very crazy that is made by one dude. Games like this feel more like a team effort. Enemy design is probably my favorite thing about it, they are very chess-like, and they fill their own niches and cover each other’s weakness to take you down. Thank you for making this game dawg. This is genuinely one of my favorite games that I ever played.
