GG !
game was definately made for controller, i would love 6 degrees of freedom controls like with everspace. Still a fun racing game
Lightfield HYPER Edition, I found this free weekend just a little while before it ended. It was a decent racing game. It reminded me a bit of the F-Zero series, so that was pretty nostalgic I guess. Seems fun with friends.
Great creative racing game in space, looks like Daft Punk and TRON. Campaign mode that starts out tutorial-like but quickly becomes challenging. This will humble you and teach you patience at hyperspeed. A free-roam/time-trial/exploration mode, XP to be gathered, new tracks to unlock. I am hoping there will be more online players in the near future. This game deserves more players. Good if you like: tough games with simple controls adrenaline mariokart and wipeout and mario new ideas neon Worth the price most definitely. The music becomes a bit tedious for me personally, so I like to play without or with my own music. I like the vibe of the game without music the most, the silence of the surroundings seems in tune with the vastness and lifeless vibe of Lightfield's scifi world to me. Really fun to play with your friends. Bonus points: Freedom to differentiate between time trial and exploration mode freely in game, feels good. Freshness of a new game mechanic that works intuitively very well. When you go smooth it feels very great, it is due to the simple and effective designs of the ships, the animations and the sounds, everything works together very harmoniously. Minus points: This is a nitpick, but I personally would like to see some more diversity in vibe and environments. I don't really want to hold it against this game though, it's more something I'd like to see in a follow-up or DLC. It speaks to how good this game feels to play as well; I just want more of it. This doesn't really count I guess, it's more me rambling in the middle of a review. Okay, real ones though: The menu is a bit confusing in it's setup at when you start a challenge. After getting all the different tracks you can unlock them again, but at night and mirrored. This feels a bit anticlimactic and less rewarding than getting a whole new track at another planet or something you saw from afar in a previous track. I don't dislike the idea of the nighttime mirrored tracks, buuuhuuut... I'd rather have them as an optionably unlockable feature of the tracks you've unlocked than the final tracks you can uncover. Whatever, it's still a great game, if you can afford it and feel that tickle in your gut, your inner child yodel with delight, maybe you should buy it.
Beispiel: Race the Sun.
Top notch lo-fi racing with a twist that exceeds novelty and becomes a gem. It feels as good as it looks, and sounds nice too. The controls are easy, the learning curve is comfortable, and the skill ceiling is high. Exploring and doing stunts offers more casual fun aside from the racing. The single player campaign, specifically the stunt missions, are the only thing I'd call remotely trash. Thats a lot coming from me, as I am a huge snob. I'd like to see more!
Amazing title. Two buttons and your steering is all it takes to make you feel completely in control - puts me in mind of Unirally on the SNES, in the best possible way. Excellent music and visuals, split screen and online play. I find myself doing a few laps against the AI, then zipping off to just explore, before getting back to the track to put in some more laps, completely seamlessly. Feels just right, highly recommended.
Lightfield HYPER Edition
By the time this post goes live, Lightfield HYPER Edition will be officially released! The studio, Lost in the Garden, had previous released Lightfield on both PS4 and Xbox One consoles back in Fall 2017. This latest release brings the game to PC with additional game modes and various other enhancements! Lightfield HYPER Edition was developed using Unity.
Premise
Lightfield HYPER Edition, at its core, is a racing game. But it provides a few unique mechanics that make it stand out as something special. Typically, gravity plays a strong role in racing games, binding the player to the ground. That is not the case in this game! The player will pilot an anti-gravity ship allowing them to traverse any portion of the map they desire. All sides of the track and any available airspace is fair game.
Gameplay
The game states that is best played using a controller. So that is how I played the game. I pulled out my Xbox One controller from the left drawer of my desk and connected it to my PC over Bluetooth. Once I started the game, I navigated the menu and found Campaign Mode which is new to the HYPER edition. Campaign mode provides a mix of challenges. Challenges range from a typical race against AI racers to exploring the racing landscapes to collect stars. Some challenges will help you hone your racing mechanics allowing you to practice with various tricks for style and speed. I also enjoyed both the tradition Race and Time Trial modes. I found myself significantly off-course in some of my first races. The game allows you to quickly reset at the last checkpoint by pressing down on the D-pad. Before long, I realized the key to staying on course was to follow the white slip-stream lines indicating which way the course turned next. This helped me improve both my performance in races and my personal lap times. The Trick Book dictates how to perform any and all tricks that your ship can perform. This would come in useful when wanting to show-off my piloting abilities to friends.
Praiseworthy Points
This game wins in the style points category. I love the vivid colors and each of the expansive worlds that are exceptional in their own particular way. While each unique, they all share a consistent aesthetic giving the world a harmonious feel. The wide variety of game modes available provides the player with many different ways to enjoy the game depending on their current mood. I really enjoy the campaign mode as the game adds progressively more depth. The game speed option also spices things up allowing the player to speed up or slow down the game. Earning experience playing the game and doing well in various challenges adds even more depth to the game. It’s an addicting challenge to earn experience in order to unlock new race tracks. If unlocking new worlds is not enjoyable, the game conveniently allows you to skip earning the experience and get right to racing on additional tracks. You just have to override the experience lock by repeatedly and in quick succession press the designated unlock button. The game does a surprisingly great job of making something that I would expect to be disorienting, perfectly fine. Snapping to new surfaces and changing which direction is up and which is down normally would normally create a sense of vertigo. That is not the case with this game. Just makes for an exhilarating adventure.
Areas For Improvement
The music is anxiety-inducing and not in a good way. There is almost always dissonance in some form. It instills the feeling something bad is going to happen; that a monster is getting closer and closer. It just made me feel uneasy the entire time. I do appreciate the developers supporting a local artist. I just wish the music was more upbeat and chill. Polish was pretty solid overall, but there are areas that I wish would be improved. Navigating the menu feels cumbersome. Additionally, snapping to surfaces with my ship would occasionally glitch, but not in a game-breaking way — just a slight break to immersion. I wish the game would take advantage of both sticks on the controller. I want one to move the camera around. Currently, both sticks control steering for the ship. In terms of what to do next with the game, I would enjoy seeing extensions of this game outside of the racing genre. I would love to play a space combat game using the same core anti-gravity precision mechanics that make this game stand out.
Final Thoughts
Lightfield HYPER Edition provides an interesting take on the racing genre. The unique mixture of racing on any surface thanks to the anti-gravity ship along with the futuristic worlds full of bright, saturated colors leaves a game most racing fans would be happy to dive into.
