Krush Kill ’N Destroy Xtreme, developed by Beam Software Pty., Ltd. and published by Ziggurat, is a classic real-time strategy game that reflects both the creativity and the roughness of the late 1990s RTS era. As an expanded version of the original KKND, it builds on a familiar foundation of resource gathering, base construction, and large-scale combat, but distinguishes itself through its pacing, setting, and slightly unconventional approach to faction design. Playing it today feels like stepping into a snapshot of the genre at a time when experimentation and intensity often took priority over refinement. At its core, the game follows the traditional RTS loop. Players gather oil as their primary resource, construct buildings, train units, and gradually build an army capable of overwhelming the opposition. What sets it apart is how quickly it pushes players into conflict. Unlike slower, more methodical strategy games, Krush Kill ’N Destroy Xtreme encourages early aggression, often forcing players to defend themselves or attack sooner than they might expect. This creates a constant sense of urgency, where there is little room for passive play. It can be exhilarating when everything clicks, but it also means that mistakes are punished quickly, especially in the early stages of a match. The post-apocalyptic setting gives the game a strong identity. The world is defined by the aftermath of nuclear war, and the factions reflect different responses to that devastation. On one side are the Survivors, who rely on conventional technology and military equipment. On the other are the Evolved, a faction of mutated creatures that use bizarre, organic units such as giant insects and other grotesque forms. This contrast is more than visual—it influences how each faction plays, offering different strengths and tactical approaches. The Evolved, in particular, bring a level of creativity to unit design that helps the game stand out even among its contemporaries. The single-player campaign benefits from a variety of mission types that go beyond simple base destruction. Objectives can include escorting units, holding positions, or managing limited resources under pressure, which helps keep the experience from becoming too repetitive. Combined with an AI that is capable of applying consistent pressure, the campaign remains engaging throughout, even if it occasionally leans on difficulty spikes rather than balanced progression. These moments can be frustrating, but they also reinforce the game’s emphasis on quick thinking and adaptability. Despite its strengths, the game’s age is immediately apparent in its mechanics and interface. Unit pathfinding can be unreliable, particularly when managing larger groups, and issuing commands is not as smooth or intuitive as in modern RTS titles. The interface itself is functional but lacks the clarity and convenience features that players have come to expect. These issues don’t make the game unplayable, but they do require a level of patience, especially for players accustomed to more polished experiences. The modern re-release preserves the game largely as it was, which is both a benefit and a limitation. On one hand, it allows players to experience the game in its original form, maintaining its retro appeal and authenticity. On the other, it means that certain features, such as multiplayer support, are no longer available, reducing the overall scope of the experience. For a genre that often thrives on competitive play, this absence is noticeable and limits long-term replayability. Visually, Krush Kill ’N Destroy Xtreme embraces the style of its time, with pre-rendered sprites and a gritty aesthetic that fits its setting. While it lacks the detail and polish of modern games, there is a certain charm in its presentation, particularly for those who appreciate older PC titles. The sound design, including voice lines and effects, adds personality, even if it occasionally feels repetitive or dated. Ultimately, Krush Kill ’N Destroy Xtreme is a game that stands as both an enjoyable strategy experience and a piece of RTS history. It captures the energy and experimentation of its era, offering fast-paced gameplay and distinctive faction design that still hold up in many respects. At the same time, its dated interface, technical limitations, and lack of modern features make it less accessible to newer players. In the end, it remains a solid example of classic real-time strategy design—one that rewards aggressive play and quick decision-making, even if it requires some patience to fully appreciate. For fans of retro RTS games or those interested in exploring the genre’s past, it offers a worthwhile and engaging experience. Rating: 7/10
I know it is old and very cheap but it does not run. Constant crashes, stuttering badly when it does run.
PROS: Fast unit production, Good amount of resource collect, Awesome background music, and Less memory needed (Only 500MB) CONS: No rally point and hotkey. No mini map at first since you need to upgrade your building 7/10 for me
Runs great, exact how I remember or at least my vague recollection of it. Fun nostalgia, and if you like RTS games recommend to give it a shot. In my opinion a underrated classic.
