great Metrovania, very nice Visuals and Music. Gameplay and Progression is addicting, world is interesting. Double Jump and Mid Air Dash confirmed
This game was a wonderful discovery with a couple sore spots but nothing that would deter me from playing it again. I do not know how they did it, but this game feels like a modern Quintet game (Developer of Soul Blazer). It really felt like playing Soul Blazer two, because you spend time in the world learning who the inhabitants are, help them with their troubles, and get upgrades when you finish their tasks. This game is another good example of how to make a solid metroidvania, that even has a couple surprises in store.
Kingdom Shell is a metroidvania about demon problems. Beat it and 100%ed achievements in 12.5 hours using a game controller. Difficulty is medium-hard. You'll probably die a few times. This is a pretty good, straight-of-the-road metroidvania. Traversing each area can be a puzzle, you wander the map looking for places to go, and you find upgrades/items that give you an Ahah! moment. Other reviews complain about the controls, but I never really had a problem. The monster battles were fair. The boss battles, while some can be hard, were also fair. I was intrigued by the world and different npcs, but where the game kinda lulls is in the story, itself - which felt like it was written by a highschooler. Lots of mysterious characters and intrigue, but very little to connect it all. By the time I beat it, I felt a bit of 'That's it?'. But if given the opportunity to play again and experience the over-all feel of the game, I probably would. Kingdom Shell's got character and spunk. Another blight on the game is the walking around. Some hallways take forever (looking at the dwarven area, specifically) and the main guy takes it at a light jog everywhere he goes. In hindsight, and mostly due to the loose story alongside having played a ton of metroidvanias, the plot of the game is a little forgettable. While I did beat it fully, I did it long enough ago that I can't remember half of it. I also keep calling Kingdom Shell 'Mortal Bloom'. And MortalBloom isn't even a game. It's a Founders beer. I do remember dwarves, and figures in robes, and a tree. And bunnies. So there's that. But yeah, if you just need something to play and like metroidvanias, you'd have nothing to lose playing this one. Most of it is better than half the metroidvanias out there. There's a lot to do, and figuring out the various puzzle-floors is fun.
This game is underrated. If you’re a fan of classic metroidvanias and beautifully crafted pixel art with cool parallax scrolling, give this one a go. Exploration is the focus here with masterfully crafted biome diversity. All the classic ability upgrades and gated areas that require backtracking. They included a magic system without falling into the trap of cluttered rpg inventory management. There’s optional mysterious side quest, collectibles and puzzles for people who want to engage with the game further. Cool boss fights that don’t waste your time like some other games in the genre. My main criticism would be that the opening biome is probably the weakest and doesn’t do a great job setting the overall tone of the game. It starts out as seeming like a dreamy fantasy game but later on delves deeper into the darker eldrtich horror castle realms. Overall, while the game doesn’t do anything particularly groundbreaking, that can be considered a positive for fans who just want a solid pixel art metroidvania.
I'm going to recommend the game. It's not bad by any means, but it really doesn't do anything special. There's a lot of good here for what looks like the Devs first game. It's a really good stepping stone game for a dev trying their hand at a Metriodvania. Mechanics are pretty solid, and the story they use is pretty good. World building is neat with some things sprinkled in that ups the story. There's some hit and miss mechanics in fighting. Some bad guys hurt when you touch them, some don't, and some hurt only sometimes when you touch them? It's kind of hard to follow who does touch damage and who doesn't. It's not a killer by any mean, but it feels sloppy. The real big issue is the ending. I don't know why but a lot of Indy Devs just down know how to end games, and this is a perfect example of that. When you get to the end section of the game, the game completely changes into a different game. The whole game has been a decent Meroidvania with some platforming thrown in, maybe once or twice its precision based(and that's only on areas you don't need to get to to beat it). But hen the whole end section is precision timed platforming mixed with sections where you have to hit an object to either move forward or up. All of that added with having to time it just right so you avoid obstacles that will kill you in two hits. It was just so violently different it ended up just ruining the game for me. I'd still recommend it. The Music and art were really cool and combat felt pretty good once you get into it.
Edited after finishing. Pros: art, music, and atmosphere are amazing. intriguing witch-queen-king story. great level design. great world building. works fantastically on my very underpowered laptop running lubuntu linux when set to 3x size i've heard the developers are very responsive to feedback which is always appreciated. Cons: platforming feels slippery making the intensive platforming sections frustrating (i'm looking at you top city gargoyle room, castle chess piece room, and most of all the deep), an upgrade to treat lava like sewer water instead of insta-death would have been veeeeeery nice. wish movement upgrades came earlier. at 11 hours in I still don't have air dash. story fell off at the very end. Overall Worth It? Heck yeah! This game is tons of fun, even with the frustrating parts. If character control felt laser precise and they could build in a way to feel increasingly powerful instead of always feeling barely equipped to deal with the next challenge, then this game would be top tier, Kudos to the team behind this, you've done something impressive.
Metroidvania simples que entrega o que promete! Podem ir esse não tem erro.
