Posting this review because the devs stated that they will be looking at reviews to help guide future development of this game. I've been seriously playing fighting games for the last 5 years and this is my favorite fighting game I have played since Melty Blood Type Lumina. I discovered this game in the arcade room at a fighting game major (Climax of Night) and was immediately captivated by the art style and mechanics of this bizarre little game. Let it be known that this is definitely a "discord fighter", for some people that is a turn off. But in my opinion discord fighters are closer to the roots of fighting games, you learn and enjoy a fighting game a lot more when you interact with the community and get to know people, players become famous for their ability to play characters in certain ways. Its a really unique experience and I think more people should be willing to try being a part of a discord community for a fighting game before writing it off. Anyway on to the review. This is a 4 button fighter, A and B correspond to your light and heavy attacks on your character as one would expect. However C and D correspond to your "Bride" the demon or angel your character is bonded to, its (a bit like persona in that way however you cant hit opponents brides.) So the C button is your projectile button, every character has some form of projectile, even the grappler, and it levels up as the match goes on. That means every characters has SOME ability to fight at range. SO does that mean this game is a zoning hell? Far from it, your D button is "Bride Dash" this is an 8 way dash that can be used twice in the air and can also be held, your are also projectile invulnerable during the startup and during some attacks. Both your projectiles and your bride dash pull from the same resource so you are constantly deciding whether to zoom in and engage your enemy or hang back and do some zoning which makes for a very unique neutral compared to any other fighter I have played. The bride dash is what really makes this game interesting, it basically gives every character the ability to fly, so matches end up being played all over the screen and in the sky which makes it feel like you are playing dragon ball Z. The game has been receiving pretty regular patches, it launched with bad net code but now its in a decent spot, its still a little buggy here and there but its miles better than launch. Things that I think need to be improved are smaller things. For one there is no tutorial in this game and the document explaining the mechanics of the games and its various characters is entirely in japanese, so learning how to play this game at all requires you to be consulting wikis even to learn universal game mechanics. There is also a staggering lack of color palettes in this game, every character only has 4 palettes which is ridiculously low for a sprite based fighter, adding more of these would be a great low effort way to expand the game. Other than that the rest of my requests are content based stuff (i.e. more characters, some balance changes, I wish characters had more moves etc), but I wouldn't be unhappy if this was the final state the game was left in.
finally the fujos get their arcana heart
most unique fighting game since arcana heart. constant patch updates and fixes
Game looks fun, but I have to refund it. As at the moment, there is virtually ZERO keyboard support. You can rebind attack buttons, but they do not work anyway. Even if they did, you cannot rebind movement keys, so you have to use arrow keys for movement. I was very hyped for this game, but I can't see the point of releasing PC port of arcade game if there is no keyboard support. I mean Arcana Heart supports kb flawlessly, dunno what happened here.
This game is buggy and the online is trash. However, if you're trying to play Daemon Bride for some reason, this is really your only option that makes any kind of sense. Let's go over some bugs I've experienced personally in my 1 session: * When trying to reconfigure my controls, one time I was controlling both 1p and 2p, when I exited the controller config menu, I was only controlling 1p, 2p was not configured to my keys in any way. * I beat story mode for the first time, and it gave me 6 achievements, some of which were not accurate (beat the game with all demons / angels). * After I beat story mode in my first playthrough, my light attack became unmapped and I had to use the keyboard to see that as it is also the key for confirmation. * I opened up training mode and the entire HUD was gone, I could not turn it back on with any options, had to restart the game for the lifebars/powerbars/etc to return. This only happened in one session, but still weird. * The display options are pretty bad, and the first time I changed my resolution the game just straight up crashed. * I don't need to go over the online issues, but there are many online issues, desync, latency issues, not showing ping. TLDR; I bought this game to support fighting games and am not going to refund it, but I can't say that this port is in a state worth $20. If you are a big fan, grab it ofc, but just know it's sloppy at the time of this review. It's possible that it will get fixed, but just be aware.
i don't know why, but button remap isn't working. i wanted to use ZXC and ASD for my buttons but it won't let me. and it only uses the numpad. there is also a simple controls glitch where if i select normal, i can spam special attacks by holding a direction and pressing a button and it only fixes itself if i press a keyboard key. please fix this.
I had to buy this shortly after I heard about it releasing on Steam because of how there was never a convenient port of this game and I was lucky enough to have played this briefly in arcades in 2009 and 2010. It's 2026 now though, and I can't in good faith recommend this on a broad scale. There are some cool characters and things to do in this game, but it largely feels unintuitive, the menus are put together basically in a bare minimum manner, the graphics are horrendous since they are based off of old sprites that weren't upscaled, something that is common for Team Arcana ports but this looks even more painful than any of the AH3 ports. Many fighting games have since released since this game first came out, and most of them play more smoothly than this and look a lot better. A color editor was added later which is neat, but there are other issues like bizarre online connectivity problems where disabling a firewall entirely seems to be the only way I could play with people, more than enough little irritations with this which have never happened in any other fighting games that I can't get behind it whole-heartedly. It least it isn't very expensive for people like me that wanted to satiate their curiosity at the bare minimum, but this feels oddly behind with the times lacking some much needed polish for a game this old. This could've came out 10 years ago in it's current state and it would've been barely passable maybe.
some connection issues and display/translation problems, but the fighting game itself is so good, hopefully Team Arcana can continue to improve the netcode and backport the exAGAIN balance changes to this version! we want a sequel!
It's got some issues but theyre clearly dedicated to fixing it and the game is good and training mode is good biggest issue is that pekomaru and kureha are in the game
